Why Visit in March?

March is a transition month. In Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan, winter chill usually gives way to warmer afternoons. Sightseeing remains rewarding, especially when you visit busy monuments early. Conditions become hotter as the month progresses, so an itinerary that feels comfortable in the first week may need earlier starts by the last week. March also suits travellers interested in festivals or wildlife. Holi brings lively celebrations to parts of North India; in several tiger reserves, the drier weather can make wildlife viewing interesting, although no sighting is guaranteed. Delhi, Agra and Jaipur make the simplest first visit to India. Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur fit well into a ten-day regional journey with a carefully chosen arrival and departure airport. Jaisalmer is worth adding if you have more time, but it is not a short side trip from Jaipur or Udaipur. Varanasi

March can work well for a visit to Varanasi, especially for travellers interested in rituals along the Ganges, traditional neighbourhoods and nearby Sarnath. Stay at least two nights if you want an evening Ganga Aarti and a morning boat outing without rushing. The riverfront can be crowded during festivals, and boat departures depend on local and river conditions. Varanasi is easier to enjoy as a considered addition to a North India itinerary than as a brief overnight stop.

Kerala and Goa

March in coastal Kerala and Goa is warm, often humid and generally better for travellers who enjoy sunshine than those seeking mild temperatures. In Kerala, a route through Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and the Alleppey or Kumarakom backwaters combines city heritage, hill scenery and a slower finish. Munnar is cooler than the coast. Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur and Madurai are rewarding for temple architecture and living traditions. March can be hot in Tamil Nadu, so avoid a schedule with long drives followed by several temple visits in the same afternoon. Tiger Safaris

Ranthambore is a practical extension to the Golden Triangle, while Pench, Kanha and Bandhavgarh are better suited to a dedicated Central India safari. March's rising temperatures and drier vegetation may improve opportunities to observe wildlife near water, but tiger sightings are unpredictable. Rather than fitting three or four far-apart reserves into a short holiday, stay several nights at one or two parks so you can take more than one safari. Choose Your Route

Decide how long you want to spend in India first. These are sensible starting points, not fixed departures or routes that have to include every city mentioned.

For a safari-focused holiday, consider the Pench–Kanha–Bandhavgarh circuit through Central India rather than adding several distant parks to a sightseeing tour. If Holi is your priority, plan the celebration location and nearby sightseeing first, then build the remaining nights around it.

March Weather

March weather varies greatly by region and by the week you travel. These are general seasonal patterns, not a forecast for March 2027.

• Delhi and Agra: Days often move from the mid-20s into the low-30s °C as the month advances. Mornings are usually milder than in January, though an occasional cool or hazy start is possible.
• Jaipur and Rajasthan: Expect dry conditions in many areas, warm to hot afternoons and generally cooler mornings. Jaisalmer and other desert areas can heat up quickly toward late March.
• Coastal Kerala and Goa: Hot, humid afternoons are common, often around the low-to-mid 30s °C. Tea-growing hills such as Munnar feel cooler, especially at night.
• Tamil Nadu: Coastal and inland temple cities can be quite hot. Start sightseeing early, plan a lunch break and carry drinking water.
• Himalayan regions: Lower hill towns may become more accessible as spring develops, but high-altitude roads and passes can still have snow-related restrictions. Do not assume Ladakh's summer road circuits are open.

What to pack: Choose breathable clothes, comfortable shoes, sun protection, sunglasses and modest clothing for temples. Carry a light layer for evenings in North India or higher-altitude stays. For safaris, wear subdued colours and take a layer for early morning drives. If you intend to join Holi celebrations, bring inexpensive clothes you do not mind staining and keep electronics in protective covers.

Holi in 2027

Holi is an important reason many visitors choose India in March. Jaipur and parts of Rajasthan offer options for organised cultural celebrations, while Mathura and Vrindavan are known for especially intense and crowded festival events. If you want to take part, a planned experience with a knowledgeable local guide is more suitable than arriving at a crowded celebration without arrangements. Some travellers prefer to observe the festivities rather than take part in colour throwing; both preferences should be discussed before the trip is finalised.

Check the dates carefully: The Government of India's March 2027 holiday calendar lists Holika Dahan on 22 March and Holi on 23 March. Some local religious calendars place the main colour celebration on 22 March. Observances can differ by place, so the exact festival programme should be verified for your destination before booking a Holi-focused itinerary. Also allow for road closures, crowded streets, adjusted sightseeing and business opening hours near the celebrations.

Other March observances can also influence travel. The central holiday calendar lists Maha Shivaratri on 6 March 2027, and Good Friday on 26 March 2027. Before You Book

• Check festival travel dates. Rooms, road transfers and guided visits can be harder to arrange around major Holi celebrations. Arrange your festival day before adding distant sightseeing stops.
• Plan for warmer afternoons. March is usually more comfortable for outdoor touring early in the day. Avoid packing monument visits and long intercity drives into the same afternoon.
• Keep Friday in mind in Agra. The Taj Mahal is closed to regular visitors on Fridays. Place the main visit on another day and check current entry arrangements.

Is March 2027 a good time to visit India for the first time?

Yes, particularly if you want a classic North India route. Delhi, Agra and Jaipur are normally good choices in early to mid-March, with plenty of daylight for monuments, markets and local experiences. The trade-off is rising heat, especially as the month goes on. For a seven-day trip, stay with the Golden Triangle rather than trying to add Kerala, Jaisalmer and Varanasi. If you have ten to fourteen days, you can include one meaningful extension. We would build your daily schedule around early sightseeing and adequate time between hotel transfers, not around seeing the maximum number of places.

When is Holi in March 2027, and where should travellers celebrate it?

India's central government calendar lists Holi on 23 March 2027, but some religious calendars give 22 March for the main colour celebrations. Local events can begin earlier and may follow different schedules. Jaipur can be a practical choice for travellers combining Holi with the Golden Triangle, while Mathura and Vrindavan are best approached with careful planning because their celebrations can be extremely crowded. If joining the colours is important, request a specific organised experience and confirm the date, location, group arrangements and transport. Will Holi affect sightseeing, roads, shops and hotel transfers?

It can. In towns where Holi is widely celebrated, roads may be busy or temporarily restricted, many small businesses can close for part of the day, and sightseeing arrangements may change. This is not an ideal time to schedule a long transfer through the centre of a festival town or depend on an early local pickup without confirming access. We recommend staying close to the celebration venue, keeping the main festival day relatively free, and arranging your driver and guide in advance. A private tour provides flexibility, but it does not override local restrictions or guarantee monument access.

How hot is India in March, and should we choose North or South India?

North India typically becomes warmer through March, with daytime temperatures that can reach the low 30s Celsius in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur later in the month. Kerala, Goa and the Tamil Nadu coast are already hot and often humid, although Munnar and other elevated places offer cooler conditions. Can we combine the Golden Triangle with Ranthambore in March?

Yes. Ranthambore fits logically with Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, although you should add enough time for safaris rather than treating the park as a quick sightseeing stop. Two or three nights near Ranthambore usually give you a better chance to take more than one drive and avoid rushing after road transfers. Safari zones, vehicle categories and entry permits are subject to park rules and availability, and tiger sightings cannot be promised. How many days do we need for a March India tour?

Around six or seven days is reasonable for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Ten days allows a more substantial heritage journey, though adding Orchha, Khajuraho and Varanasi creates a more active itinerary with train and flight connections. Twelve days works well for a focused Kerala trip, and fourteen days offers a better pace for Rajasthan's farther-apart towns. It is worth thinking about your arrival and departure flights before choosing a route: finishing in Udaipur, Kochi or Varanasi may save a long return drive, but onward connections must be checked for your dates. How far ahead should we book hotels, Holi activities and tiger safaris?

Book as soon as your international dates are reasonably certain if you are travelling around Holi, want specific heritage hotels or are planning several safaris. There is no single booking deadline for all of India: hotel demand differs by city, and national parks have their own permit procedures and release periods. A private trip may still be possible at shorter notice, but choices can become limited.
