Is April a Good Time?

Yes, if you choose your region with care. Kashmir, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Darjeeling and the hill towns of South India are appealing when the plains become hot. Spring flowers, green valleys and mountain views are reasons to travel north. April also falls within the safari season of several tiger reserves, where drier conditions may make animal movements around water easier to observe. Sightings are never guaranteed, and open-jeep drives can be very hot.

April is less suitable for travellers who want to spend an entire day walking around monuments in Jaipur, Delhi or Varanasi. By the second half of the month, a midday break is often essential. Coastal Kerala, Goa and Tamil Nadu can be humid rather than pleasantly cool. A good private itinerary allows time to return to the hotel, limits unnecessary road journeys and avoids combining far-apart destinations simply because they are all famous.

Where to Go

Kashmir

For spring scenery, Kashmir is one of the strongest April choices. Srinagar offers Dal Lake, historic gardens and the possibility of tulip blooms, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg add river valleys and mountain views. The tulip season depends on the weather and cannot be promised for every April date. Higher areas may still have snow, and Sonamarg outings can depend on road access. Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, Dharamshala and lower mountain valleys offer a different side of India in April, with cooler evenings, scenic drives and time to explore local neighbourhoods. Manali is also popular, but some high passes and snow routes may remain closed or restricted. Do not build an April holiday around a guaranteed Rohtang Pass crossing. Darjeeling and Sikkim

Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok make a rewarding spring journey for travellers interested in tea estates, monasteries, mountain viewpoints and small-town culture. The weather is generally cooler than in the plains, although clouds or rain can hide the distant peaks. Road travel takes longer than distances on a map suggest. Excursions to Tsomgo Lake, Nathula or higher parts of North Sikkim are subject to permits, weather and local restrictions; they should be treated as conditional additions rather than guaranteed stops. Assam and Meghalaya

April brings an interesting mix of cultural events and nature in Northeast India. Around Guwahati and Assam's towns, the Assamese New Year season is marked by Bihu celebrations. Shillong and the Khasi Hills provide a greener contrast to the warmer lowlands. Visit the Taj Mahal and Amber Fort early, use an air-conditioned private car, and leave afternoons less crowded with activities. Six or seven days is generally enough for the core circuit. April Weather

Much of India's lowland climate changes quickly in April. These are broad planning ranges rather than forecasts for your exact dates; local altitude, sunshine and weather systems can make a noticeable difference.

• Delhi, Agra and Jaipur: Afternoon highs are often in the mid-to-upper 30s °C, with hotter spells possible. Outdoor visits are easier early in the morning.
• Central India and tiger reserves: Very warm to hot days, sometimes around 40°C or higher. Safari drives require sun protection and realistic expectations.
• Srinagar and many hill towns: Mild spring days but cooler nights. Higher locations can be cold, snowy or inaccessible.
• Darjeeling and parts of Sikkim: Cooler mountain conditions, with rain, clouds and changeable visibility possible.
• Kerala and coastal South India: Often around the low-to-mid 30s °C by day, with humidity adding to the heat. Munnar and other elevated areas are cooler.

Pack breathable clothes, a sunhat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes for city or safari days. Take a light jacket or warm layer for Kashmir, Himachal and high-altitude trips. If you are visiting both a hot city and the mountains, plan for two different climates rather than packing for one season.

April Festivals

April 2027 includes several regional celebrations. It can be, but April requires more careful destination choices than the winter months. If visiting the Taj Mahal, Old Delhi and Jaipur is your priority, a six- or seven-day Golden Triangle tour remains possible with early sightseeing, an air-conditioned vehicle and quieter afternoons. Expect significant heat, particularly later in the month. If you prefer milder weather and scenery, Kashmir, Himachal or Darjeeling may suit you better, although these are quite different cultural experiences from the classic North India circuit. We would not try to fit Delhi, Rajasthan, Kashmir and Kerala into one short trip simply because all four appear on a list of April destinations.

Which part of India has the most comfortable weather in April?

Many travellers find Srinagar, Shimla, Dharamshala, Darjeeling and other moderate-altitude hill towns more comfortable than the plains in April. The important detail is elevation: a warm afternoon in Jammu or Chandigarh does not tell you what to expect in Gulmarg or a high Himalayan pass. Weather can also change quickly in the mountains, with cool nights, rain and occasional snow at higher elevations. In South India, Munnar, Ooty and Coonoor are cooler alternatives to Kochi, Chennai or the beaches. Can we see Kashmir's tulips in April 2027?

April is a promising time for Srinagar's tulip season, but flower displays are controlled by the weather rather than a fixed calendar. A late winter, early warm spell or heavy rain can move the best viewing period, and garden opening dates are announced locally. We recommend treating the flowers as a highlight to check nearer departure, not the only reason for the holiday. Is April a good time for tiger safaris in India?

April can be rewarding for wildlife enthusiasts because dry conditions often bring animals towards remaining water, and vegetation can be more open in parts of Central India.
