Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 7 Days Sikkim Buddhist Monastery Tour explores the Buddhist heritage of the eastern Himalayas through Gangtok, Rumtek, Ravangla and Pelling. The journey combines active monasteries, Himalayan landscapes and traditional Buddhist culture in a private route beginning and ending at Bagdogra.
The itinerary is designed for travellers interested in Sikkim's monastic traditions rather than general sightseeing alone. Rumtek forms the spiritual centre of the Gangtok section, while Ravangla and Pelling introduce additional Buddhist monuments, monasteries and mountain communities within a relaxed seven-day journey.
The first section is based in Gangtok, allowing time for Rumtek Monastery, Enchey Monastery and selected Buddhist cultural sites without rushing between mountain roads. Rumtek is particularly important for travellers interested in Tibetan Buddhist monastic heritage and religious study.
The journey then continues to Ravangla, where the Buddha Park and surrounding monastery landscape add a more open, contemplative character. Pelling completes the route with Pemayangtse Monastery and western Sikkim's Buddhist heritage before the return to Bagdogra.
Travellers who want a broader Himalayan Buddhist experience can compare this route with the 8 Days Ladakh Buddhist Monastery Tour or the 8 Days Tawang Buddhist Monastery Tour.
Arrive at Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, where your representative will meet you and assist with the private transfer to Gangtok.
The road journey climbs gradually from the plains towards Sikkim, following scenic mountain valleys and the Teesta River corridor.
On arrival in Gangtok, check in at the hotel and allow time to rest after the journey.
Your travel coordinator will review the monastery route, permit requirements and practical etiquette for Buddhist prayer halls and monastic communities.
Keep the evening free for a gentle walk near the hotel or simply relax.
Overnight stay in Gangtok.
After breakfast, drive to Rumtek for a detailed visit to Rumtek Monastery, also known as the Dharma Chakra Centre.
Explore the main shrine hall, monastic courtyards and selected study or museum areas where accessible, while your guide explains the monastery's importance within the Kagyu tradition.
Return towards Gangtok and continue with Enchey Monastery or another suitable Buddhist site according to current opening conditions.
Allow time to understand how Sikkim's monasteries function as both religious and community institutions.
Return to the hotel by evening.
Overnight stay in Gangtok.
Spend another day exploring selected Buddhist cultural sites around Gangtok.
Depending on current access and your interests, visit a monastery, Buddhist institute, prayer site or cultural centre that complements the Rumtek experience.
Your guide will explain the differences between monastic traditions represented in Sikkim and how Buddhism has shaped local art, festivals and community life.
Allow time for a quieter afternoon rather than filling the day with unrelated sightseeing.
Keep the evening free before moving to South Sikkim.
Overnight stay in Gangtok.
After breakfast, leave Gangtok and travel privately towards Ravangla.
The drive passes through forested hills and traditional settlements before reaching South Sikkim.
Visit Buddha Park and the surrounding Buddhist cultural landscape, allowing time for quiet walking and photography where permitted.
If timing allows, include a nearby monastery or prayer site according to current access.
Check in at the hotel and keep the evening relaxed.
Overnight stay in Ravangla.
After breakfast, continue privately from Ravangla towards Pelling.
Along the route, stop at selected Buddhist or cultural sites according to road conditions and available time.
On arrival in Pelling, check in at the hotel and allow time for lunch and rest.
Later, make an introductory visit to the western Sikkim monastery landscape if current opening conditions permit.
Keep the evening free in Pelling.
Overnight stay in Pelling.
Spend the day exploring the Buddhist heritage around Pelling.
Visit Pemayangtse Monastery and explore its prayer halls, sacred art and monastic setting according to current access.
Continue to selected nearby Buddhist heritage sites, ruins or prayer areas depending on road conditions and your interests.
Your guide will explain western Sikkim's religious traditions and the historical relationship between monasteries and local communities.
Return to the hotel by late afternoon and keep the final evening relaxed.
Overnight stay in Pelling.
Leave Pelling after an early breakfast and begin the private road journey towards Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station.
The journey descends through the Himalayan foothills, with practical rest stops included along the way.
Allow sufficient time for mountain-road conditions, traffic and airport or railway formalities.
If your onward flight is early, an additional night near Bagdogra or Siliguri should be considered rather than attempting a tight same-day connection.
Your 7 Days Sikkim Buddhist Monastery Tour concludes after exploring Rumtek, Gangtok, Ravangla and Pelling's Buddhist heritage.
Tour concludes at Bagdogra / New Jalpaiguri / the confirmed onward point.
