How to Plan Ten Days in India
Ten days gives you time to see India's major sights without making every morning a checkout day. You can add Varanasi or a wildlife safari to the classic Delhi, Agra and Jaipur route, spend longer among Rajasthan's forts and old cities, or devote the whole trip to Kerala or the Himalayas. With nine nights available, the best plan is usually to choose one main region and travel through it well.
Which 10-day itinerary suits your trip?
The tours above cover quite different experiences. Here is how to narrow the choice before looking at individual day-by-day plans.
- First time in India: Golden Triangle and Varanasi. See Old Delhi, the Taj Mahal and Jaipur's forts, then spend time by the Ganges in Varanasi. This mixes the country's best-known monuments with a very different cultural experience. A flight can help avoid a long overland journey. Compare Golden Triangle tours and Varanasi itineraries.
- Taj Mahal and wildlife: add Ranthambore. A Delhi–Agra–Ranthambore–Jaipur circuit is a good way to include a tiger safari without crossing the country. Allow two nights near the park if possible, so the visit does not become one long driving day. Safari permits and zone availability need checking in advance; sightings are never guaranteed.
- Rajasthan: more time in fewer cities. Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur make a rewarding journey for travellers who enjoy forts, markets, local food and heritage hotels. You may also include Pushkar or a countryside stay, but Jaisalmer adds substantial road travel. Browse Rajasthan tour packages before choosing how far west to go.
- Kerala: hills, wildlife and backwaters. Start in Kochi, continue to Munnar's tea country and Thekkady, then stay by the Alleppey backwaters. With ten days, there is room for a beach stop around Mararikulam or an extra night somewhere you particularly enjoy. See our Kerala itineraries for different travel styles.
- Kashmir or Ladakh: mountain scenery. A Kashmir trip can include Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg with time to enjoy the landscapes. Ladakh tours are more demanding: altitude adjustment and road conditions need space in the schedule. Treat them as different types of holidays rather than trying to squeeze both into a rushed circuit.
- South India: temples and everyday culture. Routes through Tamil Nadu can take in Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur and Madurai. Temple visits, architecture and regional food are the main reasons to choose this journey. It is quite different from a Kerala-focused holiday, so look at the South India tour options before deciding.
Do you really have ten days for sightseeing?
Not always. If your flight lands late on day one and you leave early on day ten, you have about eight useful days. Delhi, Agra and Jaipur connect well by road; Varanasi, Kerala and the Himalayan destinations often need domestic flights. Before booking international tickets, check where the tour begins and ends. An itinerary finishing in another city may save a long return drive, provided the onward flight connection works.
The best time depends on where you go
October to March generally suits sightseeing in Delhi, Agra and Rajasthan, although December and January can bring fog that affects travel. Kerala is pleasant for many travellers in the cooler months, while its monsoon brings frequent rain. Kashmir changes significantly through the year. For Ladakh, road access and high-altitude conditions matter more than the usual India travel-season advice. If your dates are fixed, choose the region to match them.
What should your 10-day tour quote include?
The price of a private 10 days India tour package depends on the route, hotel category, season and number of people sharing the vehicle and rooms. Check each tour card for a starting price, where available. Your written proposal should specify the hotels, breakfasts, private transport, driver, local guides and any domestic flights, train journeys, safaris or entrance fees included. International airfare is not included. Let us know your travel month, arrival airport, group size and preferred pace, and we can adjust the itinerary before you commit.
