Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel design er (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 10 Days Kerala Hills & Backwaters Cycling Tour combines Kerala’s cooler hill country with its flatter backwater and coastal landscapes. The route links Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Marari, giving riders a varied journey through tea estates, spice country, village roads, canals and the coast.
The itinerary is best suited to active inbound travellers who are comfortable with moderate riding and occasional climbs. The support vehicle remains available throughout for steep sections, luggage, water, mechanical assistance and transfers around busy or unsuitable roads.
The Munnar and Thekkady stages are more demanding than the backwater sections because hill gradients, curves and changing road surfaces can add difficulty even when total distance is moderate.
As the route descends towards Alleppey, riding becomes easier and flatter. Canal-side lanes, paddy fields and coastal roads create a slower final phase after the hill-country stages.
Heavy rain, fog, road works and landslides can affect hill-road cycling, especially during wetter periods. The guide should adjust rides according to current local conditions rather than forcing a fixed daily distance.
Arrive in Kochi and transfer privately to your hotel. The first day is kept relaxed after the journey.
Meet your cycling guide for a briefing covering the route, support vehicle, hill-road riding, humidity, weather and traffic awareness.
Complete bike fitting, saddle adjustment and a basic mechanical check where bicycles are supplied locally.
Your guide will explain braking on descents, group spacing on curves, hydration and how riders can use the support vehicle on demanding climbs.
If arrival timing permits, take a short practice ride in a suitable low-traffic area.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
Begin with a relaxed supported bicycle ride through suitable streets of Fort Kochi and nearby heritage neighbourhoods.
Stop at selected waterfront, colonial-era and Mattancherry areas according to current access and traffic.
Ride slowly through narrow lanes and use walking sections where pedestrians or local traffic make cycling less suitable.
Continue with cultural sightseeing and take a rest during the hotter part of the day.
Return to the hotel and prepare for the transition into Kerala’s hill country the following morning.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
Leave Kochi by support vehicle to bypass the busiest urban and highway sections.
Begin cycling from a suitable point as the landscape becomes greener and the road enters the foothills.
Ride through rubber, spice and mixed agricultural areas before the gradients become more demanding.
Stronger riders can continue farther into the climbing section, while others can use the support vehicle and rejoin the group at an agreed point.
Complete the final climb to Munnar by bicycle or support vehicle depending on gradient, weather and road conditions.
Overnight stay in Munnar.
Begin early with a supported ride through the Munnar tea-country region.
Cycle along selected hill roads with tea estates, valley views and plantation landscapes.
The terrain is rolling to hilly, and some sections may involve sustained climbing or technical descents.
Riders should control speed on curves and remain alert for buses, jeeps, pedestrians and changing road surfaces.
Later, visit a tea-related attraction or processing facility according to current access and operating conditions.
Overnight stay in Munnar.
Leave Munnar after breakfast and begin with a supported ride on a suitable section of the route towards Thekkady.
The landscape gradually shifts from tea estates to mixed plantations, spice-growing areas and tropical agriculture.
Expect rolling terrain, curves and variable road surfaces. The support vehicle can be used whenever traffic or gradients make a section less enjoyable.
Stop for water and short plantation-view breaks without entering private property unless permission has been arranged.
Complete the final approach to Thekkady by bicycle or vehicle according to conditions.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
Begin with a morning ride through suitable roads around the Thekkady region.
Cycle past spice gardens, plantation areas, villages and forest-edge landscapes where public access is appropriate.
The guide will avoid restricted forest roads and sensitive wildlife zones. Cycling should remain outside protected areas unless a route is officially permitted.
Later, visit a suitable spice plantation to learn about cardamom, pepper and other crops according to season.
Keep the afternoon relaxed after several consecutive hill-riding days.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
Leave Thekkady and begin a supported ride on a suitable descending or rolling section towards lower Kerala.
Riders should control speed carefully on descents, especially where roads are wet, narrow or shared with buses and local traffic.
As the terrain becomes flatter, the scenery changes from plantation hills to villages, coconut groves and agricultural land.
Rejoin the support vehicle for busier sections before reaching Alleppey.
Check in near the backwaters and enjoy a relaxed evening after the transition from hills to plains.
Overnight stay in Alleppey.
Begin early with an easier loop ride through the Alleppey backwater region.
Cycle beside canals, paddy fields, coconut groves and village homes on mostly flat roads.
Narrow lanes may be shared with pedestrians, scooters and local vehicles, so the group should keep speed moderate.
A short ferry or boat crossing may be included where suitable and operating.
Spend the remainder of the day relaxing or enjoying a separate backwater boat experience.
Overnight stay in Alleppey.
After breakfast, begin the final substantial ride towards Marari.
Cycle along quieter village roads through coconut landscapes and lowland communities.
As the route approaches the coast, ride on suitable local roads while the support vehicle bypasses busier town sections.
The final kilometres should remain relaxed, giving the group time to enjoy the coastal setting rather than chase distance.
Check in near Marari and spend the evening at leisure by the sea.
Overnight stay in Marari.
Depending on departure timing, take a short easy morning ride on suitable roads around Marari.
Return to the hotel, pack the bicycles and load luggage into the support vehicle.
Travel towards Kochi by vehicle, avoiding unnecessary cycling on busier intercity roads.
If time permits, stop for a meal or short break en route.
Transfer to Kochi airport, railway station or your agreed onward point.
Tour concludes in Kochi.
