Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 10 Days Kerala Food, Spices & Backwaters Tour is a deeper culinary journey through Kerala, combining Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey and Marari. The route moves from historic spice-trade neighbourhoods to tea country, plantation landscapes, backwater villages and the coast, showing how geography shapes Kerala’s food.
The itinerary is designed for inbound travellers who want food experiences integrated with Kerala’s major landscapes rather than a series of restaurant visits. Markets, tea, spice plantations, home-style cooking, backwater meals and coastal cuisine are balanced with Fort Kochi, hill scenery and village life.
Kochi introduces the maritime and spice-trade background of Kerala cuisine. Munnar adds tea estates, highland produce and hill-country food. Thekkady provides direct context for cardamom, pepper and plantation spices, while Alleppey and Marari reveal how waterways and the coast influence everyday meals.
Vegetarian and vegan travellers can follow this itinerary comfortably. Seafood can be included where requested, but it is not essential to the culinary experience. Spice levels can also be adjusted for travellers who prefer milder food.
Seasonal produce, plantation crops and market availability change throughout the year, so individual tastings and ingredients should remain flexible rather than being guaranteed in advance.
Arrive in Kochi and transfer privately to your hotel. The first day is intentionally relaxed after your journey.
Kochi is an ideal starting point for understanding Kerala’s cuisine because the city has long been connected with maritime trade, spices, fishing communities and several cultural traditions.
In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring a balanced introduction to Kerala food. Depending on preference, the meal may include rice, coconut-based preparations, vegetables, lentils, regional breads and seafood.
Your guide or host can explain ingredients such as curry leaves, mustard seeds, coconut, tamarind and black pepper, along with how they are used differently across the state.
Reconfirm dietary requirements and preferred spice levels before the upcoming market and cooking activities.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
After breakfast, explore Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, combining major heritage attractions with the story of Kerala’s spice trade.
Walk through suitable market lanes and spice shops to see pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and other ingredients connected with Kerala’s trading history.
Learn how whole spices are stored, ground and combined, and how their use changes between savoury dishes, sweets and beverages.
At lunch or dinner, enjoy a coastal Kerala meal. Seafood can be included for interested travellers, while vegetarian options can highlight coconut, vegetables, lentils and rice-based preparations.
Continue with a relaxed evening in Fort Kochi.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
After breakfast, leave Kochi and travel towards Munnar, climbing from the coastal plains into Kerala’s cooler hill country.
The changing landscape provides a natural introduction to the different agricultural products and food traditions of Kerala’s highlands.
On arrival, check in and explore a suitable tea-estate viewpoint or local market area according to current access.
Enjoy a tea tasting or introductory tea experience where arranged, learning about the difference between leaf grades, processing and preparation styles.
Dinner can feature a simple hill-country Kerala meal suited to the cooler climate.
Overnight stay in Munnar.
Spend the day exploring Munnar through tea landscapes and selected local food experiences.
Visit a tea-related attraction, estate or processing facility according to current access and operating arrangements.
Learn how tea leaves are harvested and processed, and how altitude, leaf type and processing affect flavour.
Later, visit a suitable local market or produce area where available to see vegetables, fruit and ingredients used in hill-country households.
End with a regional meal or hosted experience focused on simple, seasonal food rather than a large tasting menu.
Overnight stay in Munnar.
After breakfast, travel from Munnar to Thekkady, moving deeper into Kerala’s spice-growing highlands.
Along the route, notice the shift from tea landscapes towards mixed plantations, spice gardens and tropical crops.
On arrival, check in and take a short local orientation walk through a suitable market or plantation neighbourhood.
Your guide can introduce the role of cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in local agriculture and cooking.
Enjoy a regional dinner that demonstrates spice balance rather than excessive heat.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
Spend the morning at a suitable spice plantation in the Thekkady region.
Depending on season and plantation conditions, see crops such as cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg or other tropical plants.
Learn how spices are cultivated, harvested and processed before reaching markets and kitchens.
Later, join a Kerala cooking demonstration, plantation meal or home-style culinary experience where arranged. Focus on how whole and ground spices are balanced with coconut, vegetables, lentils or seafood.
Keep the evening relaxed after the full culinary programme.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
After breakfast, travel towards Alleppey and Kerala’s backwater region.
On arrival, board a suitable backwater cruise or transfer to your selected backwater accommodation according to the confirmed itinerary.
Enjoy a meal built around rice, coconut, vegetables and fish or seafood where requested.
During the backwater journey, observe how canals, rice fields, fishing and village life influence the ingredients and rhythm of everyday cooking.
Spend the evening enjoying the slower pace of the waterways.
Overnight stay in Alleppey or on the backwaters.
Begin with a relaxed morning around the backwaters and, where arranged, visit a suitable village or household for a closer look at local food preparation.
The experience may include coconut preparation, rice-based foods, vegetable dishes, snacks or simple home-style cooking depending on the host and season.
Later, continue to Marari or another suitable coastal area.
The move from backwaters to the coast introduces another shift in food culture, especially in the use of fresh fish, coconut, rice and coastal produce.
Enjoy a relaxed coastal dinner according to dietary preference.
Overnight stay in Marari.
Spend the morning exploring the food culture of the Marari coast through a suitable local market, village area or fishing community according to current arrangements.
Where appropriate, observe the day’s fresh produce and seafood trade while respecting working areas and local photography preferences. Travellers who do not eat seafood can focus on vegetables, coconut, rice products, fruit and other coastal ingredients.
Later, join a home-style cooking session or hosted lunch where available. Learn how coconut, curry leaves, tamarind, seasonal vegetables and fish or plant-based alternatives are used in coastal Kerala kitchens.
Keep the menu practical and regional rather than trying to prepare too many dishes. The purpose is to understand technique, ingredient balance and household cooking.
Spend the late afternoon at leisure by the coast before enjoying a final relaxed dinner in Marari.
Overnight stay in Marari.
After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey from Marari towards Kochi.
Depending on your flight schedule, a final tea, bakery, spice-shop or light meal stop can be included without making the departure day too busy.
Use the final meal to compare the culinary regions experienced during the journey: Kochi’s trade-influenced coastal food, Munnar’s tea country, Thekkady’s plantation spices, Alleppey’s backwater cuisine and Marari’s coastal home cooking.
Continue to Kochi airport or your agreed onward point with a comfortable departure buffer.
Your 10 Days Kerala Food, Spices & Backwaters Tour concludes after combining tea, spices, markets, home cooking, backwater meals and coastal traditions across five distinctive Kerala settings.
