May India Tour Packages

May is a month to choose your part of India carefully. The plains around Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Central India can be extremely hot, but Kashmir's valleys, Himachal's hill towns and the higher reaches of Uttarakhand offer a very different kind of journey. Sikkim is green and scenic, although rain can interrupt mountain roads. For travellers who want culture as well as comfortable weather, the right route matters more than how many famous places it covers.

Our India tours in May 2027 are private and planned around your dates, interests and preferred pace. Browse the May tour packages above, then compare the regions below. We explain which journeys suit first-time visitors, what to expect from the weather, and when permits, long drives or seasonal closures may affect your plans.

Is May a Good Time?

Yes, particularly for mountain scenery, slower hill holidays and selected wildlife trips. Kashmir is pleasant for lakes, gardens and valley outings; Manali, Dharamshala and Mussoorie attract summer travellers; and Ladakh can be considered by air if you allow proper time to adjust to the altitude. May is also a busy school-holiday period in India, so well-located mountain hotels and popular excursions can fill up even though it is not the main season for classic heritage tours.

May is much less comfortable for a long, outdoor-heavy Golden Triangle or Rajasthan circuit. Sightseeing is possible with early starts and air-conditioned transfers, but summer heat can change how enjoyable a fort, market or walking tour feels. In Kerala, the hill country is cooler than the coast, while humidity and approaching seasonal rain affect the backwaters and beaches. The most useful question is not simply whether May is a good month, but which part of India fits the trip you want.

Where to Go

Kashmir

For many international travellers, Kashmir is the clearest May choice. Srinagar has Dal Lake, traditional gardens, neighbourhood walks and houseboat stays. Pahalgam brings rivers and pine-covered valleys, while Gulmarg and Sonamarg offer mountain landscapes that can still include snow at higher elevations. Allow six to eight days if you want more than brief day trips from Srinagar. The road to a viewpoint, a gondola ride or a particular valley may depend on local weather, ticket availability and transport rules. See our Kashmir tours for private routes with sensible overnight stops.

Himachal Pradesh

Himachal is a good fit for scenic drives, monasteries, mountain towns and a more relaxed holiday. Dharamshala combines Tibetan cultural sites with forested foothills; Shimla offers colonial-era streets and viewpoints; and Manali is known for mountain scenery and Solang Valley. Distances can be misleading: driving from Shimla to Manali, or onward to Dharamshala, takes up a substantial part of the day. We would rather plan two or three worthwhile nights in each area than sell a rushed collection of hill stations. High passes, including Rohtang, should never be treated as guaranteed May excursions. Compare our Himachal tour options before choosing the route.

Uttarakhand

Mussoorie and the Nainital region appeal to travellers looking for hill views, easy walks and heritage hotels. Rishikesh is a different experience: it is a place for Ganges-side stays, yoga and spiritual visits, but it can be very hot in the daytime. You can combine a short Rishikesh stay with a cooler hill town instead of expecting the entire state to have mountain weather. May is also part of the traditional opening season for the Char Dham pilgrimage. That journey requires separate planning for temple opening dates, registration, fitness, high-altitude travel and crowd levels; it should not be presented as an ordinary sightseeing extension.

Ladakh

Leh and its monasteries can make a memorable May holiday for travellers interested in Buddhist culture and stark high-altitude landscapes. Arriving by air is usually the more dependable way to reach Leh at this time of year. The Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh road approaches can still be affected by snow and seasonal openings, so a May plan should not rely on a confirmed overland crossing without a current road update. Ladakh also needs a slower start: travellers arriving in Leh must allow at least 48 hours to acclimatize before travelling to higher areas such as Pangong or Khardung La. Our Ladakh tours can be planned around these conditions rather than rushing straight from the airport into the mountains.

Sikkim and Darjeeling

Gangtok, Pelling and Darjeeling are appealing if you enjoy monasteries, tea gardens, hill views and a mix of cultures. North Sikkim excursions towards Lachung and Yumthang may also be possible, but May brings significant rainfall to parts of the state. Clouds can obscure mountain panoramas, and landslides or local restrictions can change the route at short notice. Build in flexibility, particularly if you want remote valleys or permit-controlled locations. For a first visit, seven to nine days is more useful than fitting Gangtok, North Sikkim and Darjeeling into a hurried five-day trip. Explore our Sikkim itineraries and check the road status for your dates.

Kerala

Kerala can still work in May if you prefer a slow holiday and do not expect cool coastal weather. Munnar's tea estates are a welcome change from the heat in Kochi, while Thekkady adds spice gardens and nature-focused stays. Alleppey or Kumarakom can provide a peaceful backwater night, although the lowlands are humid and showers may become more frequent as the monsoon approaches. Choose hotels with good cooling, leave room for indoor time and avoid making every day a long drive. For a compact introduction, the Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey route shows how the different landscapes can fit together.

Wildlife Safaris

May can be productive for dedicated wildlife photography because some forest landscapes are dry and animals may visit water sources more often. However, an open-vehicle safari in Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha or Pench can be fiercely hot. We recommend an early drive, plenty of drinking water, suitable sun protection and a realistic number of parks. Two reserves with several safaris are usually better than four reserves connected by long road journeys. Kaziranga is more uncertain in May: its safari season is affected by rising rain and may close before the month ends. Verify the exact operating dates before treating a wildlife tour as confirmed. No itinerary can guarantee a tiger or rhino sighting.

Golden Triangle

If the Taj Mahal is the main reason for your first India visit, you can still travel through Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in May. It is not the season we would recommend for someone sensitive to heat. Plan visits to major monuments early, use a private air-conditioned vehicle, take a proper break after lunch and limit lengthy market walks. Do not extend a six-day route to Jaisalmer or Jodhpur merely to add more cities; the extra road time can outweigh the benefit. Our Golden Triangle tours are a starting point, but a cooler month may be the better decision if you have flexible travel dates.

Choose Your Route

These are practical May itinerary ideas, not fixed departures. Your international flight city, preferred pace and any mountain permits will determine the final day-by-day plan.

  • 5–6 days: Kashmir highlights. Fly to Srinagar and focus on Dal Lake, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Add Sonamarg only when the available days and road conditions allow; the 5-day Kashmir itinerary offers a starting point.
  • 7–8 days: Kashmir at a slower pace. Stay in Srinagar and Pahalgam, with time for Gulmarg, gardens and optional excursions. This is often a better fit for couples and overseas families than changing hotels every night.
  • 7–9 days: Himachal hills. Choose Shimla and Manali, or Dharamshala with nearby mountain towns. The Shimla–Manali–Dharamshala tour is possible but includes long transfers, so additional nights improve the pace.
  • 7–9 days: Leh and nearby Ladakh. Fly to Leh, set aside two days for acclimatization, visit accessible monasteries and add Nubra or Pangong only after confirming health, weather and road access. Avoid a tightly packed first or second day.
  • 7–9 days: Sikkim and Darjeeling. Build the route around Gangtok, Pelling and Darjeeling, or choose a conditional North Sikkim extension. Keep a little flexibility in case of heavy rain or disrupted roads.
  • 5–8 days: Kerala hills and backwaters. Combine Munnar, Thekkady and one backwater stay. This works well for a slower holiday, although coastal heat and showers are part of the May experience.
  • 8–10 days: Central India wildlife. Choose one or two reserves, pre-arrange safaris, and allow for intense heat and longer inter-park transfers. A safari-first trip needs a different pace from a city sightseeing tour.

May Weather

May has some of India's strongest regional weather contrasts. These are typical planning conditions rather than a forecast for May 2027; actual temperatures, rain and road access may differ.

  • Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and the plains: Often very hot, with afternoon temperatures approaching or exceeding 40°C during heatwaves. Extensive walking is best avoided at midday.
  • Central India and safari parks: Hot, dry conditions can make long open-jeep drives tiring. Even morning safaris need water and sun protection.
  • Srinagar and Kashmir's valleys: Generally milder days and cooler evenings than the plains. High viewpoints and snow areas require warmer clothing.
  • Himachal and Uttarakhand: Cooler in elevated towns, but foothills and low valleys can still be hot. Weather changes with altitude and passing storms.
  • Leh and Ladakh: Strong sunshine, cold nights and high-altitude conditions. Pleasant-looking weather does not remove the need for acclimatization.
  • Sikkim and Darjeeling: Often mild at hill elevations, with increasing rain, cloud and occasional road disruptions.
  • Kerala: Hot and humid in the coastal lowlands; cooler in Munnar, with possible pre-monsoon showers and changing conditions towards the end of May.

Pack lightweight clothes for hot transit cities, comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. Add a warm layer and rain jacket for hill destinations. A Ladakh holiday needs a more deliberate packing plan for cold, dry air, strong UV exposure and altitude. For mixed-region trips, check the weather at each overnight stop rather than using a single forecast for India.

May Festivals

The published 2027 Indian holiday calendar lists Buddha Purnima on 20 May, an important observance at Buddhist sites. Travellers interested in Buddhist heritage may consider monasteries in Ladakh or Sikkim, or Bodh Gaya in Bihar, but Bodh Gaya is usually very hot in May. The central holiday calendar also lists Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) on 17 May 2027; that date remains subject to moon sighting. Regional celebrations, prayer arrangements and visitor access should be confirmed locally rather than assumed from a national calendar.

For most May holidays, weather and summer-school travel demand will affect the trip more than festivals. If attending a religious event is a priority, let us know the exact location and date so accommodation, transport and guide arrangements can be checked before the itinerary is confirmed.

Before You Book

  • Book popular hill stays early. May overlaps with domestic school holidays, and convenient hotels in Kashmir, Manali, Shimla and Mussoorie may be busy.
  • Allow for mountain drives. A short map distance can mean several hours on winding roads. Avoid arriving late at night after a long transfer or planning an onward flight immediately after a remote road journey.
  • Confirm permits and access. Ladakh, North Sikkim, border areas and certain protected routes may require permissions or have restrictions that differ by nationality and location.
  • Respect altitude. Fly-in visitors to Leh need at least 48 hours for acclimatization before higher-altitude excursions. A private vehicle does not prevent altitude sickness.
  • Check safaris before hotels. Verify the national park, safari zone, actual operating season and permit availability. Do not assume Kaziranga stays open throughout May.
  • Make room for weather changes. Rain in Sikkim, mountain road work, snow on passes and early seasonal storms can affect an otherwise well-planned day.
  • Ask for a clear quotation. Check whether domestic flights, local guides, houseboats, gondola tickets, permits, safari entries, meals and any special local taxis are included.

Private, Your Way

Every May tour can be adjusted to your international arrival and departure flights, interests, hotel preferences and comfort level. We can suggest a shorter mountain route, add time for cultural visits, or replace a heat-heavy city circuit with a more suitable destination. Tell us your dates, number of travellers and which places interest you most. We will work out the road time, practical overnight stops and services in a clear private itinerary, rather than simply joining together a long list of attractions.

May Travel FAQs

Is May 2027 a good time for a first visit to India?

It depends on the kind of India experience you want. May is excellent for a mountain-focused introduction, especially Kashmir or the cultural landscapes of Ladakh, Himachal and Sikkim. If your main interests are the Taj Mahal, Old Delhi, Jaipur's forts and a classic Rajasthan journey, May is significantly hotter than November to February. Those sights remain open, but you will probably enjoy them more with very early starts and afternoon breaks. A traveller with flexible dates could choose a cooler month for the classic circuit; someone already booked for May could combine a short, carefully paced Agra visit with a longer stay in the hills. We would make that choice before selecting individual hotels.

Which places in India have the best weather in May?

Srinagar, Pahalgam, Dharamshala, Shimla, Manali, Mussoorie and Darjeeling are generally more comfortable than Delhi, Jaipur or the central plains because of their elevation. However, a pleasant temperature in a valley does not mean the nearest mountain pass is open, and a cool destination can still have rain or a very busy holiday season. Kashmir is usually a strong all-round choice for lake and valley scenery. If you prefer monasteries and high-altitude desert landscapes, consider Leh with proper acclimatization. South India is hotter and more humid at sea level, though Munnar can offer a cooler hill stay. Choose based on altitude, rainfall and the activities you actually want to do.

Should we choose Kashmir or Ladakh for a May holiday?

Kashmir is often the easier choice for a relaxed first mountain holiday. Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg offer gardens, lakes, forests and mountain views without needing to sleep at Ladakh's higher elevations. Ladakh is quite different: the attraction is its Buddhist monasteries, dramatic dry landscapes and remote valleys. It also requires greater care with altitude, cold nights and road access. Visitors flying into Leh must spend at least 48 hours acclimatizing before higher excursions, and some famous road routes may not yet be open in May. For families wanting gentle sightseeing, Kashmir usually makes more sense. For travellers specifically drawn to high-altitude culture and landscapes, Ladakh may be rewarding if health and timing permit.

Can we visit Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake in May 2027?

A Leh-based trip may be possible in May, but it needs a flexible itinerary. You can generally reach Leh by air when flights are operating, while long road approaches from Manali or Srinagar depend on seasonal snow clearance and official road openings. Once in Leh, the first two days should be kept light for acclimatization. Do not schedule a rapid ascent to Pangong or Khardung La immediately after landing. Nubra, Pangong and other high areas also depend on route conditions, permits and your ability to cope with altitude. For international visitors, entry rules can differ by area and nationality. We recommend confirming the access requirements first and planning rewarding Leh and monastery visits as part of the trip, not treating them as spare time.

Can we visit the Char Dham temples during May 2027?

May often falls within the opening period for the high-altitude shrines at Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, but the exact opening dates for 2027 and official registration requirements must be checked before booking. The pilgrimage is physically and logistically different from a standard private hill-station holiday. Travel involves long drives, early departures, high elevations and, at some shrines, walking or arranged alternatives subject to availability. Crowds can be substantial at the start of the pilgrimage season. If Char Dham is your main purpose, allow enough days for the route and possible weather delays. Do not build a tight international flight connection around an expected return from a remote temple town.

Is May suitable for Gangtok, Lachung and North Sikkim?

Yes, these destinations can be attractive in May, but it is essential to separate the main towns from more remote mountain excursions. Gangtok and other established hill centres offer monasteries and local sightseeing even when distant peaks are hidden by cloud. Lachung, Yumthang and higher routes rely on permissions and roads that can be affected by rain, landslides or local closures. Sikkim receives substantial rain from May onwards, and a forecast for Gangtok does not guarantee conditions in North Sikkim. We suggest keeping at least one flexible day and avoiding a plan in which a single remote excursion is the only reason for the trip. Travellers who want a relaxed pace might pair Gangtok with Pelling or Darjeeling instead.

Is May a good month for tiger safaris and Kaziranga?

May can suit serious wildlife enthusiasts who accept heat, dust and early starts. Some dry forests in Central India can offer useful opportunities to observe animals near water, but sightings remain unpredictable. Focus on one or two reserves such as Kanha, Bandhavgarh or Pench, arrange several drives and confirm the exact safari schedule before booking lodges. Kaziranga is a separate case: increasing rain can lead to its seasonal closure during May, and the end date varies by year and safari type. It should not be advertised as a guaranteed late-May wildlife experience. If rhinoceros viewing in Assam is your main purpose, we would check the park's current order first and discuss another travel month if necessary.

What is Kerala like in May, and is a houseboat still worthwhile?

Kerala can be a pleasant choice for people who enjoy a slower holiday, but May is generally hot and humid in the lowlands and the approach of the southwest monsoon can bring heavy showers. Munnar's elevation gives it a different feel from Kochi or Alleppey. A houseboat night may still be possible when operators are running and weather conditions permit, although you should not expect clear sunshine throughout the trip. We would combine a few nights in the hills with one planned backwater experience, rather than relying on long beach days. If uninterrupted sunny weather is essential, May is not the most dependable month for coastal Kerala. Your hotel comfort and room for changes matter more than adding several more stops.

Which festivals and holidays fall in May 2027?

The published national holiday calendar lists Buddha Purnima on Thursday, 20 May 2027, and Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) on Monday, 17 May 2027. Bakrid is linked to the lunar calendar and the observed date can change with moon sighting. Buddha Purnima is especially relevant at Buddhist pilgrimage sites and monasteries, although programmes and opening arrangements differ from place to place. Bodh Gaya is an important destination for the occasion, but expect strong summer heat there. If a festival is central to your holiday, tell us before finalizing flights and hotels. We can check the local programme, practical travel conditions and whether extra time is needed for crowds or altered traffic.

How far ahead should we book, and what is included in a private May tour?

Booking earlier is sensible if you want particular Kashmir houseboats, mountain-view hotels, holiday-period dates, or limited safari permits. The most time-sensitive element differs by region, so we would first check access, available hotels and any special permits, then finalize the route. A private quotation can include accommodation, an appropriate vehicle and driver, guided sightseeing and selected activities. Domestic flights, local mountain taxis, gondola tickets, high-altitude permits, safaris, meals and special experiences should each be specified rather than assumed. International airfare, visa arrangements and travel insurance are not automatically included. Share your travel dates, arrival city, number of people and comfort preferences, and we can prepare a day-by-day proposal with clear inclusions and exclusions.
