Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 10 Days Complete Buddhist Circuit India Tour follows the most important places connected with the life, teachings and legacy of the Buddha in northern India. The journey links Sarnath, Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Vaishali, Kushinagar and Shravasti in one carefully paced private pilgrimage.
The route is ideal for travellers looking for a focused Buddhist pilgrimage tour in India without adding Nepal. It includes the place of the Buddha's first teaching at Sarnath, the site of enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, major teaching centres at Rajgir and Shravasti, the ancient monastic university of Nalanda, Vaishali's Buddhist heritage and Kushinagar, associated with the Buddha's Mahaparinirvana.
The itinerary begins with arrival in Delhi before a domestic connection to Varanasi. Sarnath is given a dedicated visit with time for Dhamek Stupa, the archaeological zone, monastery traditions and meditation or quiet reflection where appropriate. Varanasi remains part of the journey primarily as the practical gateway to Sarnath and as an important cultural contrast.
In Bihar, two nights in Bodh Gaya allow the Mahabodhi Temple Complex to be experienced at a slower pace rather than as a rushed sightseeing stop. The route then continues through Rajgir and Nalanda before an overnight near Patna, creating a more practical road journey towards Vaishali and Kushinagar the next day.
The final section follows the Buddhist trail through Kushinagar and Shravasti before ending in Lucknow. Travellers wanting a shorter Bihar-focused journey can also consider the 3 Days Bodhgaya, Rajgir & Nalanda Tour. Those who wish to continue to Lumbini can choose the longer India and Nepal Buddhist pilgrimage route.
Arrive at Delhi International Airport, where a Tusk Travel representative will meet you and assist with the private transfer to your hotel.
The first day is intentionally kept light after your international journey. Check in, rest and adjust to local time before the Buddhist circuit begins.
If you arrive early and would like a gentle introduction to Delhi, a short orientation drive can be arranged according to your energy level and traffic conditions.
Your travel coordinator will review the route, domestic connection to Varanasi, expected road sectors and practical etiquette for monasteries and pilgrimage sites.
Keep the evening free for rest and an early night.
Overnight stay in Delhi.
After breakfast, transfer privately to the airport for the most suitable confirmed flight to Varanasi.
On arrival, meet your local representative and transfer to the hotel. Allow time for lunch and rest before beginning any sightseeing.
Later, take an introductory drive or walk through selected areas of Varanasi according to traffic and your energy level.
Although Varanasi is not itself the principal Buddhist pilgrimage stop on this itinerary, it is the gateway to nearby Sarnath and offers useful cultural context before the Buddhist circuit continues east and north.
Keep the evening flexible. A Ganges experience can be added if desired, but the main Buddhist programme begins the following morning.
Overnight stay in Varanasi.
After breakfast, drive to Sarnath, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India.
Visit the Dhamek Stupa and archaeological area associated with the place where the Buddha delivered his first teaching after enlightenment.
Explore Chaukhandi Stupa, monastery remains, selected temples and the museum or interpretation areas according to current opening conditions.
Your guide will explain the significance of the Deer Park, the beginning of the Sangha and the role of Sarnath in the spread of Buddhist teaching.
Allow some quiet time for reflection before returning to Varanasi. The evening is free or can include an optional cultural experience.
Overnight stay in Varanasi.
After breakfast, leave Varanasi and travel privately by road towards Bodh Gaya.
The drive connects the site of the Buddha's first teaching with the place of his enlightenment, making this one of the most meaningful transitions on the Buddhist circuit.
On arrival, check in at your hotel and allow time for lunch and rest.
Later, make an introductory visit to the Mahabodhi Temple Complex if current opening conditions and your energy level permit.
Keep the first evening unhurried. The following day is dedicated more fully to Bodh Gaya's sacred sites and monasteries.
Overnight stay in Bodh Gaya.
Begin early at the Mahabodhi Temple Complex, the spiritual heart of Bodh Gaya.
Spend time near the Bodhi Tree and Vajrasana, with your guide explaining the site's connection with Siddhartha Gautama's enlightenment.
Continue to selected international monasteries representing Buddhist traditions from countries across Asia. The exact monastery selection can be adjusted according to opening hours and your interests.
Later, visit the Great Buddha Statue and Sujata-related sites where practical, adding context to the period immediately before the Buddha's enlightenment.
Return to the Mahabodhi area in the late afternoon or evening for meditation, chanting or quiet reflection if access and local practice permit.
Overnight stay in Bodh Gaya.
After breakfast, travel privately to Rajgir, an important landscape associated with the Buddha's teachings and monastic life.
Visit Griddhakuta, also known as Vulture's Peak, and selected Buddhist sites such as Venuvana or the Peace Pagoda according to current access and time.
Continue to Nalanda for a guided exploration of the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara ruins.
Walk through the monastic and educational remains while learning about Nalanda's importance as a major centre of Buddhist scholarship attracting students and teachers from across Asia.
Later, continue to Patna for the overnight stay. This positioning makes the next day's journey through Vaishali towards Kushinagar more practical.
Overnight stay in Patna.
Leave Patna after an early breakfast and drive to Vaishali.
Visit selected Buddhist archaeological sites such as the Ashokan Pillar, relic-stupa area and other remains according to current access and opening conditions.
Your guide will explain Vaishali's association with the Buddha's later life and its place within the wider Buddhist pilgrimage route.
Continue by road towards Kushinagar. This is a longer travel day, so stops are kept practical and the programme is not overloaded.
Arrive in Kushinagar by evening, check in at the hotel and rest before the following morning's pilgrimage visits.
Overnight stay in Kushinagar.
Begin with the sacred sites of Kushinagar.
Visit the Mahaparinirvana Temple and reclining Buddha image, followed by Ramabhar Stupa and other selected Buddhist monasteries or archaeological sites.
Your guide will explain Kushinagar's association with the Buddha's final days and Mahaparinirvana, giving the visit time for reflection rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
After lunch, travel privately towards Shravasti.
Arrive by evening and check in at the hotel. Keep the night quiet before exploring Jetavana the following morning.
Overnight stay in Shravasti.
After breakfast, explore Shravasti, where the Buddha spent many monsoon retreats and delivered numerous teachings.
Visit the Jetavana Monastery area, including selected ruins, stupas and places associated with Anathapindika and the ancient monastic community.
Continue through the Saheth-Maheth archaeological landscape and visit an international monastery if time and current access allow.
Allow some quiet time in the Jetavana area before beginning the private road journey to Lucknow.
On arrival in Lucknow, check in at the hotel and keep the evening free.
Overnight stay in Lucknow.
Enjoy breakfast and a relaxed final morning according to your confirmed onward flight or train schedule.
If your departure is later in the day, a short Lucknow sightseeing visit can be arranged, or you can simply rest at the hotel after the overland pilgrimage circuit.
Meet your chauffeur for the private transfer to Lucknow airport or railway station.
If your international flight departs from Delhi, a domestic flight from Lucknow to Delhi can be added according to the best confirmed connection.
Your 10 Days Complete Buddhist Circuit India Tour concludes after tracing the Buddha's teaching, enlightenment, monastic and Mahaparinirvana sites across northern India.
Tour concludes in Lucknow / at the confirmed departure point.
