Rajgir Mahotsav, an internationally acclaimed three-day event, is scheduled to take place from November 29 this year. Shashank Shubhankar, the DM of Nalanda, said the schedule was finalized after consultation with the state tourism development department, which serves as the co-host of Mahotsav.

In addition, the tourism department will soon announce the artists’ names.

According to the DM, the seven-day ‘Gram Shri Mela’ will be part of this year’s Mahotsav and a platform for promoting rural art. He said there would also be a book fair, a food mela, a fun zone, and an agriculture mela.

The three-day extravaganza will include traditional ‘tonga’ and ‘palki’ decoration competitions, painting contests, and Sadbhavna March. A 32-cell structure, supervised by district officials, will ensure that the event runs smoothly.

Rajgir Nritya Mahotsav was first organized in 1986 by the Union Tourism Minister H K L Bhagat and then the Bihar CM Bindeshwari Dubey in Sone Bhandar when it was a low-key affair mostly attended by officials and a limited number of visitors.

After CM Nitish Kumar expressed his desire to move the Mahotsav to a place accessible to everyone, Nalanda DM Sanjay Kumar Agrawal brought it to Qila Maidan in 2011.

In 2017, the Mahotsav was moved from protected Qila Maidan to RICC and hockey ground due to restrictions imposed by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).
