Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
If you want more than trains, temples and city viewpoints, this 11-day Japan adventure itinerary adds real outdoor time without turning the trip into a technical trekking holiday. Begin in Tokyo, continue toward Mt. Fuji and Hakone, then move into Matsumoto, Kamikochi and Takayama.
The mountain section is followed by Kyoto and Osaka, so the itinerary still includes major cultural highlights. The result is a balanced route for active travellers who enjoy walking, scenery and countryside but do not want to spend every day on a demanding trail.
The standard version is moderate rather than extreme. Expect regular walking, one main hiking day in the Alps when seasonal access allows, and optional cycling or countryside activity in Takayama. The exact distance can be adjusted to the fitness level of the group.
Kamikochi is seasonal and mountain weather can change quickly. Outside its usual access period, or when local conditions are unsuitable, the day should be replaced with another Alps-region experience rather than forcing a route that is not appropriate.
For other active options, explore our Japan adventure tours. This route can be customised around hiking level, private transport, cycling, luggage forwarding, hotel category and additional time in the Japanese Alps.
This itinerary suits couples, friends and active first-time visitors who want Japan’s cities and cultural highlights but would also like mountain scenery, a proper walking day and time in smaller towns. It is not designed as a mountaineering or technical trekking programme.
Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to your hotel. The first evening is intentionally light because the active part of the trip begins after you have had time to recover from the flight.
Use the evening to walk locally, pick up any small travel essentials and get an early night if needed. There is no benefit in starting a hiking-focused itinerary already tired.
Tokyo is your base for two nights before the route moves toward Mt. Fuji, Hakone and the Japanese Alps.
Overnight stay in Tokyo.
Spend the day exploring Tokyo with more walking and less time inside vehicles. Start in a traditional district such as Asakusa, then move to a modern area like Shibuya or Shinjuku.
The day is not meant to be strenuous, but it is a useful introduction to the amount of walking that comes naturally with travel in Japan. Comfortable shoes matter more than trying to dress formally for every stop.
For more options in the capital, see our Tokyo tours.
Overnight stay in Tokyo.
Leave Tokyo for the Mt. Fuji and Hakone region. Depending on weather and local operating conditions, the day may include lakeside walking, volcanic landscapes, viewpoints or a short nature trail.
Clear views of Mt. Fuji are possible in good weather but never guaranteed. The mountain is part of the landscape rather than a promise that every traveller will see a cloud-free summit.
Travellers who want a more Fuji-focused route can also review our Mt. Fuji tours.
Overnight stay in Hakone or the Mt. Fuji region.
Continue toward Matsumoto, a useful gateway between the Fuji region and the Japanese Alps. This is primarily a transfer day, so the programme stays lighter after arrival.
If timing works well, explore the castle area and surrounding streets on foot. Matsumoto is compact enough to enjoy without needing a long sightseeing schedule.
Use the evening to prepare for the mountain section. Weather in the Alps can change quickly, even when city conditions feel mild.
Overnight stay in Matsumoto.
Spend the day in the Kamikochi area if it is open and suitable for your travel dates. The valley is one of the best places on this route for an accessible mountain walk surrounded by rivers, forests and alpine scenery.
The exact walking distance should match your fitness level, weather and trail conditions. This itinerary does not require a technical trek, and there is no advantage in turning a scenic day into an endurance test.
Kamikochi access is seasonal, so outside the operating period the day should be replaced with another mountain or cultural experience in the wider Alps region.
Overnight stay in Matsumoto or the surrounding Alps region.
Travel across the mountain region toward Takayama. The route itself is part of the experience, with changing landscapes and smaller towns replacing the big-city setting of the first days.
After arrival, walk through the Sanmachi old-town area and allow time for local food, craft shops and slower exploration.
Takayama works well on an adventure itinerary because it gives your legs a lighter day while keeping the trip connected to the Alps.
Overnight stay in Takayama.
Use the morning for Takayama’s market area and old streets, then choose a more active afternoon if you wish. Depending on season, local availability and comfort level, this can include cycling, a countryside walk or another outdoor experience.
Any cycling route should be selected around road conditions, weather and the experience of the group. Helmets, rental terms and route suitability should be confirmed locally.
If you prefer a rest day, Takayama is equally rewarding at a slower pace with food, museums and traditional streets.
Overnight stay in Takayama.
Leave the Alps and continue to Kyoto. After several outdoor-focused days, the journey shifts toward temples, traditional neighbourhoods and a more cultural rhythm.
Keep the first afternoon easy with Gion, Yasaka Shrine or Higashiyama if timing allows.
Kyoto receives two nights, which is enough for one full sightseeing day without turning the city into a rushed stop.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Spend the day exploring Kyoto largely on foot. Arashiyama works well for travellers who enjoy outdoor scenery, while temple districts and older streets add cultural depth.
Choose a realistic route rather than trying to cross the city repeatedly. The day can include the bamboo grove, riverside, a temple garden and another district depending on your pace.
This is still an active day, but the focus is on walking and discovery rather than hiking.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Travel to Osaka for the final night. Keep the day flexible and choose one or two areas such as Osaka Castle, Namba, Dotonbori or a riverside district.
After the mountain and walking sections of the trip, a looser final afternoon is usually more enjoyable than another tightly scheduled day.
Finish with a relaxed dinner and enjoy Osaka’s food culture before departure.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.
If your flight is later in the day, keep the final morning local and avoid adding a distant excursion before departure.
The 11-day adventure journey ends after combining Tokyo, Mt. Fuji and Hakone, Matsumoto, Kamikochi, Takayama, Kyoto and Osaka with a mix of walking, mountain scenery and cultural sightseeing.
Tour ends in Osaka.
