Durga Temple Varanasi
Durga Temple, tinted red with ochre, is one of the most famous temples in Varanasi and was built by a Bengali queen in the 18th century. The vertical arrow-shaped and multi-layered shikhara, this temple is constructed in the North Indian Nagara style of temple architecture. The temple shikhara consists of several small, beautifully stacked arrow-shaped Shikharas. The main spire consists of several small spires.
The Durga temple of Varanasi consists of five segments that symbolize "Panchmahabhutas" (5 essential elements that give birth to life and universe) and is supporting beautifully carved columns, which are marked by an orned Shikhara. Non-Hindus, but not the inner sanctum, are admitted to the courtyard. The ferocious form of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva's wife, is Durga. There are also sacrifices of goats during festivals. It is widely known as the Temple of Monkey because of so many monkeys.
