Complete Manali–Jispa–Sarchu–Leh Highway Guide
The Manali to Leh road trip crosses some of the highest and most dramatic road landscapes in the Himalayas. The journey travels through the Atal Tunnel, Lahaul Valley, Jispa, Baralacha La, Sarchu, Gata Loops, More Plains and Tanglang La before descending toward Leh.
District Leh lists the highway at approximately 473 kilometres and states that it generally operates from May or June until September or October. Because the road gains altitude quickly and contains long isolated sections, it should be divided into at least two days.
Why the Route Is Special
The highway links green Kullu and Lahaul valleys with Ladakh’s high-altitude desert. The scenery changes rapidly from forests and rivers to barren passes, broad plains and deeply eroded mountains.
Why the Route Is Challenging
Travellers face cold weather, high passes, rough sections, water crossings, limited fuel, sparse accommodation and little mobile connectivity. Weather can change quickly even in summer.
Jispa Is Usually the Better First Halt
Jispa is lower and more comfortable than Sarchu, making it the preferred first overnight stop for many travellers beginning in Manali.
The Route Is Not the Best for Rapid Travel
A one-day drive creates fatigue and an abrupt altitude gain. A two- or three-day itinerary is much safer and more enjoyable.

Leave Manali early and travel through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul Valley. Continue through Sissu, Tandi and Keylong before reaching Jispa.

Three-Day Manali to Leh Itinerary
Manali to Jispa
Travel through Atal Tunnel, Sissu, Tandi and Keylong. Rest beside the Bhaga River.
Jispa to Sarchu
Cross Darcha and Baralacha La, visit Suraj Tal and stop at Sarchu only when the group is comfortable.
Sarchu to Leh
Cross Gata Loops, Nakee La, Lachulung La, More Plains and Tanglang La before reaching Leh.

Manali
Prepare the vehicle, fuel, cash, documents and warm clothing before departure.
Atal Tunnel
Provides direct access into Lahaul Valley and avoids the older Rohtang Pass approach for through traffic.
Sissu
A scenic Lahaul stop suitable for breakfast, waterfalls and a short break.
Tandi and Keylong
Important for fuel, food, accommodation, repairs and basic supplies.
Jispa
The preferred overnight base with camps, hotels and guesthouses beside the Bhaga River.
Baralacha La
Himachal Tourism places the pass around 75 km from Keylong on the Manali–Leh road.
Sarchu
A seasonal high-altitude camp stop between Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. Nights are cold and altitude can be difficult.
Gata Loops and High Passes
A winding ascent followed by Nakee La and Lachulung La through remote terrain.
More Plains and Tanglang La
Broad high-altitude plains lead toward Tanglang La, Upshi and the Indus Valley road into Leh.

Fuel
Start with a full tank in Manali and refuel around Tandi or Keylong. Reliable fuel becomes limited afterward until Leh.
Food
Manali, Sissu, Keylong, Jispa and seasonal dhabas provide meals. Carry water and snacks for isolated sections.
Accommodation
Keylong and Jispa offer hotels, guesthouses and camps. Sarchu mainly has seasonal camps with basic facilities.
Network and Cash
Connectivity and digital payments weaken beyond Lahaul. Carry cash and offline documents.
Bus, Taxi, Bike or Self-Drive?
Seasonal Bus
District Leh confirms bus access from Manali, but schedules should be verified close to travel.
Private Taxi
Best for comfort, luggage and weather flexibility. Confirm whether the vehicle can be used for later local Ladakh sightseeing.
Motorcycle
Suitable for experienced riders with protective gear, repair support and a conservative itinerary.
Self-Drive Vehicle
Use a well-maintained high-clearance vehicle and verify rental, entry and local taxi-union rules.

Important Manali to Leh Road-Trip Advice
Ladakh Police describes the highway as scenic but challenging, with rough patches, high passes and possible landslides or snow blockage. Early travel is recommended because melting snow can increase water flow during the day.
- Do not attempt the route immediately after an overnight bus journey to Manali.
- Sleep in Manali before starting.
- Choose Jispa rather than Sarchu for the first halt when possible.
- Leave early to cross water channels before flow increases.
- Do not drive after dark.
- Monitor headache, nausea, dizziness and breathlessness.
- Keep passengers hydrated and warm.
- Carry vehicle tools and a spare tyre.
- Follow police and BRO road instructions.
- Keep one weather-delay buffer day.
The Route Gains Height Quickly
The Manali approach crosses very high terrain before reaching Leh. Do not assume that travelling by road automatically prevents altitude illness.
