Ladakh Itinerary
Best Ladakh Itineraries for First-Time and Repeat Visitors
A well-designed Ladakh itinerary must balance sightseeing with altitude safety, road distances and rest. The most common mistake is attempting to visit Nubra Valley or Pangong Lake immediately after landing in Leh. Official guidance requires travellers to complete at least 48 hours of acclimatization before higher-altitude travel.
For most visitors, a 7 to 10-day trip provides the best balance. A five-day itinerary should remain focused on Leh and nearby places, while longer journeys can add Tso Moriri, Hanle, Kargil, Suru Valley or Zanskar.
Start Every Flight-Based Itinerary with Leh
Travellers arriving by air gain altitude quickly. The first two days should include rest, hydration and light sightseeing such as Leh Market, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa and nearby cultural sites.
Group Nearby Destinations
A route through Leh, Nubra and Pangong is more efficient than repeatedly returning to Leh. Western Ladakh attractions such as Alchi, Likir, Basgo and Lamayuru should be grouped into a separate Sham Valley day or road-trip section.
Keep Remote Regions for Longer Trips
Hanle, Tso Moriri, Kargil and Zanskar require extra driving and limited-service nights. Add them only when the itinerary has enough time for realistic daily distances.
Use Buffer Time
Mountain weather, flight delays and changing road conditions can affect even a well-planned schedule. Keep a buffer before the return flight whenever possible.

Avoid Repeated Long Drives
Use two-night stays and group nearby attractions whenever possible.
Check Route Access
Direct Nubra–Pangong and Changthang routes depend on current road and permit conditions.
Keep a Flight Buffer
Return to Leh before departure rather than arriving from a remote lake on flight morning.

Some camps, roads and remote stays operate only during the main summer season.
Do Not Ignore Health
Reduce altitude or seek medical help if symptoms become serious or continue worsening.
