Tourists were cautioned by the Indian government to leave Kashmir a few days before disrobing the agitated valley of its independence. As per the Governor of Kashmir, they will be greeted back this week. Sensing the possibility of a terrorist attack, authorities also called holiday-makers to leave urgently to a prime Hindu pilgrimage via buses and planes.
New Delhi also levied a restriction on movement. The government shut down all communication sources that included the telecom lines and internet lines before the contentious autonomy decision to suppress discontent. Satya Pal Malik, the local governor of the region, said that the “advisory of the home department that probes tourists to evacuate the valley should be boosted” from Thursday.
There were no details regarding the cause for the advisory to get raised this week. Malik also told that New Delhi declared that authorities were slowly elevating the curfew. He added that all the safety limitations were removed from the majority of the terrorist-prone areas of Kashmir.
Tourist operators told AFP in August that they were hit by the drastic reduction in the number of visitors in Kashmir. The tourism department in Kashmir was worried that a large number of people would not visit the state for a long period of time.
As per the official data, lakhs of people visited the Kashmir valley in the initial 7 months of 2019. Along with it, some three lakh religious tourists also visited the Kashmir valley in July month before calling off their Hindu pilgrimage due to the terrorist attacks. The statistics state that around 150 international tourists visited Kashmir after the 5th of August, 2019 when New Delhi argued its self-sufficiency till the end of the month.
Kashmir is divided between Pakistan and India since 1947. It has been the stimulus for wars between the two powerful nuclear-armed enemies. The war had taken the life of lakhs of people in the past in a revolt against Indian rule since 1989. Most of the people who got killed were civilians.
Evidence that was made on the ground suggested that locals are annoyed with the self-rule decision. Regular protests have made business owners and educational institutions refuse to open their properties and keep children out of schools.
