8 Days Tokyo Hakone Kyoto Nara and Osaka Japan Tour

8 Days Classic Japan: Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara & Osaka

7 Nights / 8 Days Tokyo · Hakone · Kyoto · Nara · Osaka

Tour Overview

This 8-day Japan itinerary is designed for first-time travellers who want to experience the country’s essential contrasts without rushing through too many cities. The journey begins in Tokyo, continues to the hot-spring and mountain landscapes of Hakone, and then moves into the cultural heart of Kyoto.

From Kyoto, the route continues through Nara before finishing in Osaka. With two nights in Tokyo, one night in Hakone, two nights in Kyoto and two nights in Osaka, the itinerary balances sightseeing with realistic travel time and avoids unnecessary backtracking.

This is not a checklist-style tour that tries to visit every famous place in Japan. Each day focuses on one region or a practical group of nearby sights, leaving enough time for food, neighbourhood walks and the small experiences that make Japan memorable.

Hakone adds a slower mountain stay between Tokyo and Kyoto, while Nara fits naturally between Kyoto and Osaka. This creates a route that is geographically logical and especially suitable for travellers visiting Japan for the first time.

The itinerary can be customized around hotel category, private guiding, rail preference, family travel, food interests, cultural experiences or additional nights in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka.

Tour Highlights:

  • Explore traditional and modern Tokyo.
  • Stay in Hakone with lake, mountain and hot-spring scenery.
  • Experience Kyoto’s temples, shrines and traditional districts.
  • Visit Nara Park and important Buddhist heritage.
  • Finish with Osaka’s food, neighbourhoods and city life.
  • Follow a practical Tokyo to Osaka route without unnecessary backtracking.

Who Is This Tour Best For?

This route is particularly suitable for first-time visitors, couples, families and international travellers with around one week in Japan who want the major cultural highlights plus one slower mountain stay.

Detailed Itinerary

Arrive in Tokyo and meet your driver or representative for the transfer to your hotel. Keep the first day intentionally light so you can recover from the international flight and adjust to the time difference.

Depending on your arrival time, take an easy first walk around your neighbourhood, visit a nearby shopping street, or simply rest before the main sightseeing begins.

Tokyo is a large city, so the itinerary is designed by area rather than trying to cross the city repeatedly in one day.

Day Highlights:

  • Arrival assistance and private transfer to your hotel.
  • Easy first evening with no rushed sightseeing.
  • Introduction to Tokyo at your own pace.

Overnight stay in Tokyo.

Tokyo city skyline on the first day of a Japan itinerary

Spend a full day exploring Tokyo, combining traditional and modern districts. A balanced first-time route may include Asakusa and Senso-ji, a walk around the Imperial Palace area, and one of the city’s major modern neighbourhoods such as Shibuya or Shinjuku.

The exact order can be adjusted according to your interests. Travellers interested in food, design, anime, museums or shopping can replace part of the standard sightseeing with a more specialised experience.

For travellers adding extra nights, our Tokyo tours can also be extended with Kamakura, Nikko or additional city neighbourhoods.

Day Highlights:

  • Asakusa and Senso-ji for historic Tokyo.
  • Modern Tokyo in Shibuya, Shinjuku or another preferred district.
  • Flexible sightseeing based on interests.

Overnight stay in Tokyo.

Tokyo sightseeing with traditional and modern districts

Leave Tokyo for Hakone, one of the most popular mountain and hot-spring areas within easy reach of the capital. The region is known for Lake Ashi, volcanic scenery, museums, ryokan stays and possible views toward Mt. Fuji when the weather is clear.

Spend the afternoon exploring Hakone at a relaxed pace. Depending on local conditions and your interests, the day can include Lake Ashi, Owakudani, the Hakone Ropeway or an art museum.

An overnight stay in Hakone gives the route more character than treating the area as a rushed day trip from Tokyo.

Day Highlights:

  • Travel from Tokyo to Hakone.
  • Lake, mountain and volcanic landscapes.
  • Opportunity for a traditional ryokan or onsen-style stay.
  • Possible Mt. Fuji views when weather conditions are favourable.

Overnight stay in Hakone.

After breakfast, continue from Hakone toward Kyoto using the most practical rail connection for your final hotel location. This travel day introduces Japan’s efficient intercity rail network without overloading the schedule.

On arrival in Kyoto, check in and begin exploring one nearby district. Depending on timing, this may be Gion, Yasaka Shrine, the Higashiyama area or the lanes around your hotel.

Kyoto deserves more than a single sightseeing day, so this itinerary keeps two nights here before continuing to Nara and Osaka.

Day Highlights:

  • Intercity rail journey from the Hakone region to Kyoto.
  • First introduction to Kyoto’s traditional districts.
  • Light arrival-day sightseeing rather than a rushed temple circuit.

Overnight stay in Kyoto.

Traditional Kyoto streets and temples on arrival from Hakone

Spend a full day discovering Kyoto. A classic first-time sightseeing plan may include Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, part of Higashiyama and a major temple or garden such as Kinkaku-ji, depending on your preferred pace.

Avoid trying to visit every famous temple in one day. Kyoto is best experienced by grouping sights geographically and allowing time to walk through traditional streets and neighbourhoods.

Travellers interested in tea culture, crafts, gardens or food can replace part of the standard route with a more specialised experience.

Day Highlights:

  • Fushimi Inari and Kyoto’s shrine culture.
  • Historic Higashiyama and traditional streets.
  • Temple and garden sightseeing at a comfortable pace.

Overnight stay in Kyoto.

Kyoto temple and traditional district sightseeing

Leave Kyoto for Nara, the historic former capital known for Todai-ji, Nara Park and important early Buddhist heritage. Spend the main part of the day exploring on foot before continuing to Osaka.

Nara works particularly well as a stop between Kyoto and Osaka because it adds a different historic atmosphere without requiring another long-distance transfer.

Arrive in Osaka in the late afternoon or evening and settle into the city. If energy allows, take an evening walk around Dotonbori or another lively food district.

Day Highlights:

  • Nara Park and Todai-ji.
  • Historic Buddhist and cultural heritage.
  • Continue onward to Osaka without backtracking.
  • Optional evening in Dotonbori.

Overnight stay in Osaka.

Nara Park and historic sightseeing between Kyoto and Osaka

Spend a full day in Osaka, focusing on the city’s food culture, neighbourhoods and urban energy. A first-time route may include Osaka Castle, Umeda or another observation area, and time in Namba, Dotonbori or Shinsekai.

Osaka is less about ticking off temples and more about experiencing a lively contemporary Japanese city. Keep enough free time for food, shopping and exploring the streets at your own pace.

The day can also be adapted for families, food-focused travellers or guests who prefer a slower schedule before departure.

Day Highlights:

  • Osaka Castle or another major city landmark.
  • Food and street life around Namba and Dotonbori.
  • Flexible time for shopping or neighbourhood exploration.

Overnight stay in Osaka.

Osaka city sightseeing and Dotonbori experience

After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.

If your departure is later in the day, the schedule can allow a final local walk, shopping stop or relaxed meal, provided it does not create unnecessary risk for your flight connection.

Your 8-day Japan journey ends after linking Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara and Osaka in a practical first-time route.

Day Highlights:

  • Private or arranged departure transfer.
  • Flexible final morning depending on flight time.
  • End of the 7-night / 8-day Japan itinerary.

Tour ends in Osaka.
