Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 12-day Best of Japan itinerary gives first-time travellers more breathing room than a standard one-week Golden Route. Begin with three nights in Tokyo, continue to the mountain and hot-spring landscapes of Hakone, and then spend three nights exploring Kyoto.
The journey continues through Nara to Osaka, before travelling west to Hiroshima and Miyajima. A final night back in Osaka keeps the departure day practical for travellers flying from Kansai International Airport.
The extra days are used where they matter most: a second full day in Tokyo, a second full day in Kyoto and enough time for both Hiroshima and Miyajima. The itinerary remains geographically logical and avoids unnecessary backtracking during the main sightseeing days.
Hakone breaks up the journey between Tokyo and Kyoto, Nara fits naturally on the route to Osaka, and Hiroshima adds both historical depth and the island scenery of Miyajima.
The tour can be customized around hotel category, private guiding, rail preference, food experiences, cultural activities, family travel or additional nights in any of the major cities.
This itinerary suits first-time visitors, couples, families and long-haul travellers who want Japan’s major cultural highlights but prefer a more comfortable pace than a shorter 7 or 8-day route.
Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to your hotel. Keep the first day intentionally light so you can recover from the international flight and settle into the city at a comfortable pace.
If your arrival time allows, take an easy walk around your neighbourhood or enjoy a simple local dinner rather than committing to a long sightseeing programme.
The next two days are reserved for Tokyo, giving first-time visitors enough time to experience both traditional and modern sides of the capital.
Overnight stay in Tokyo.
Spend a full day exploring Tokyo, balancing older neighbourhoods with the city’s contemporary side. A classic route may include Asakusa and Senso-ji, the Imperial Palace area, and one major modern district such as Shibuya or Shinjuku.
The day can be adjusted around food, museums, shopping, architecture or pop culture. Tokyo is large, so it is better to group nearby attractions than spend much of the day crossing the city.
If you would like more time in the capital, explore our Tokyo tours for additional neighbourhoods and day-trip ideas.
Overnight stay in Tokyo.
Use a second full day in Tokyo to explore the city at a slower pace. Depending on your interests, this can include Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Ueno, Ginza, teamLab, food markets, museums or a neighbourhood-focused walking experience.
Families may prefer interactive attractions, while couples and repeat visitors may choose a food experience, shopping district or quieter residential area.
Keeping a third night in Tokyo makes this itinerary more comfortable for long-haul travellers and avoids leaving the capital before you have had time to adjust.
Overnight stay in Tokyo.
Leave Tokyo for Hakone, a mountain and hot-spring region known for Lake Ashi, volcanic landscapes, museums and traditional ryokan stays.
Depending on weather and operating conditions, explore Lake Ashi, Owakudani, the Hakone Ropeway or one of the area’s art museums.
Views toward Mt. Fuji are possible from parts of the region when skies are clear, but mountain visibility is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed.
Overnight stay in Hakone.
After breakfast, continue toward Kyoto using the most practical rail connection for your hotel location.
On arrival, check in and begin with a light introduction to the city. Depending on timing, walk through Gion, Higashiyama or the area around Yasaka Shrine.
Kyoto receives three nights in this itinerary, giving enough time to enjoy the city without turning the stay into a rushed temple checklist.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Spend a full day exploring Kyoto’s major cultural highlights. A balanced first-time route can include Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Higashiyama and one additional temple or garden depending on your preferred pace.
Avoid trying to visit every famous temple in one day. Kyoto is best enjoyed by grouping nearby sights and allowing time to walk through traditional streets.
The day can also include a tea experience, craft activity or food-focused stop if you prefer a more immersive cultural programme.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Use the second full Kyoto day for Arashiyama and western Kyoto. Depending on your interests, visit the bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji, river area and one additional cultural stop.
This day gives the itinerary more depth than a one-day Kyoto visit and creates space for gardens, quieter streets and a slower local experience.
If you prefer, the day can be adapted toward Uji, a food and tea experience, or another Kyoto neighbourhood instead.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Leave Kyoto for Nara, one of Japan’s historic capitals. Visit Nara Park, Todai-ji and the surrounding heritage area before continuing to Osaka.
Nara fits naturally between Kyoto and Osaka and adds important early-Buddhist heritage without creating a long detour.
Arrive in Osaka later in the day and, if energy allows, take an evening walk around Dotonbori or another lively food district.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
Spend a full day exploring Osaka. A first-time route may include Osaka Castle, a city viewpoint, Namba, Dotonbori or Shinsekai depending on your interests.
Osaka is especially enjoyable for food, street life and a more contemporary urban atmosphere, so keep enough unstructured time to explore local neighbourhoods.
Families, couples and food-focused travellers can easily adapt the day around their preferred style of sightseeing.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
Travel by rail from Osaka to Hiroshima. After arrival, check in and begin exploring the city at a measured pace.
Visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and related historical sites, allowing enough time to understand the significance of the area rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
Keep the evening relaxed before the Miyajima excursion the following day.
Overnight stay in Hiroshima.
Travel to Miyajima for the island atmosphere, Itsukushima Shrine area and views across the Inland Sea. Ferry and local transport timings should be checked for your exact travel date.
Spend enough time on the island to enjoy the setting rather than rushing through only the most famous viewpoint.
Later, return to Hiroshima and continue by rail to Osaka for the final night. This makes the departure day easier for travellers using Kansai International Airport.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.
If your departure is later in the day, the schedule can allow a final local walk, shopping stop or relaxed meal without creating unnecessary risk for your flight connection.
Your 12-day Best of Japan journey ends after linking Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima and Miyajima in one well-paced route.
Tour ends in Osaka.
