There are many things to be known about Rajasthan, including its rich history, magnificent palaces, tales of kings and queens, colorful culture, and delicious cuisine. However, did you know that Rajasthan hides an underground library deep within the Thar Desert? Yes, there is a hidden library in Asia with 900000 books and is one of the biggest!

What is the location of this secret library?

Rajasthan’s Bhadariya village, located in the Pokaran Tehsil of Jaisalmer district, houses the library. One of the largest libraries in Asia, this unique treasure trove in the Thar region can accommodate 4000 people at once.

It is unique due to the fact that it is 16 ft under the ground, and, due to its location, the library remains cool even in hot and humid summer weather.

History of the library

Harbansh Singh Nirmal built the library. He’s also known as Bhadariya Maharaj (Saint). Coming from Punjab, he was a voracious reader himself. There is an extensive collection of books in the library from all over the world. Throughout his life, people have given him thousands of books as gifts. In 1998 he began collecting these books, then funds were appropriated to build a temple dedicated to the goddess.

Locals in the village say Maharaj spent many years in the library reading and studying all the books. Science and astronomy as well as astrology and history are all presented in the library. Also included in this treasure trove are dictionaries, atlases, and epics.

There are 562 glass shelves in this library, where all the books are preserved and well-organized, so they can be accessed by scholars and students from around the world for research and education.

There’s no doubt that this is a bibliophile’s dream come true and every book lover should visit this museum. Villagers and devotees of the temple are now responsible for maintaining the library.
