History of Bhagsunag Temple:
About 5000 years ago, a devil king called Bhagsu reigned in this place. He had various mysterious powers. Once upon a time a 4 disaster spread all over his rule and created severe water scarcity. The people started to depart his reign. When King Bhagsu saw this, he went to the hills in search of water. About at the height of 18000ft, he witnessed a large fountain. By his strange power, he stole the water filled it in his Kamandal, and moved towards his capital. The reservoir was the home of the Snake God (Nag Devta). Nag Devta came to this place and observed that the reservoir was empty and then she became angry and chased King Bhagsu. Naga Devta challenged King Bhagsu to fight and in that fight, King Bhagsy got beaten and prayed to Nag Devta to forgive him.
Nag Devtaforgave the king and asked for anything he desired. King Bhagsu then said that the people of his kingdom were facing huge water scarcity. Nag Devta blessed him with the requested gift and immediatelythe water fountains started flowing for his kingdom. Nag Devta said that this place will be called Bhagsu Nag in the future. Since then this place has become the centre of worship for the people.
Architecture of Bhagsunag Temple:
The architecture of the Bhagsunag Temple is a fusion of traditional Himachali design and artistic subtlety. The whitewashed walls ornate with complex carvings and vivid prayer flags waving in the mountain breeze create an atmosphere of tranquillity. The Bhagsunag temple is made of various shrines and structures dedicated to several gods and goddesses within Hindu mythology. It also contains three main sections. They are – the Pradakshinam, the Garbha Griha, and the Sabha Mandapam.
The Pradakshinam is a route around the temple which is meant for circumambulation of the main shrine. The Garbha Girha, or interior sanctum, houses the shrine to Lord Shiva himself. Visit in September, as this is when the annual festival takes place at the temple.

By Air: The closest airport to the Bhagsunag Temple is Gaggal Airport which is 15 kilometers away from Dharamshala.
By Rail: The closest railway station is Kangra which is narrow gauge and 20 kilometers far away from Dharmasahala. Pathankot is the closest Broad gauge railway station which is 85 kilometres far from Dharmashala.
By Road: Buses from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab cities are available for Dharamshala.
The Bhagsunag Temple is located about 11 kilometers from Dharamshala. One can hire a cab to reach Mcleodganj, which is 9 kilometers away from Dharamshala. From Mcleodganj, a 2 2-kilometre walk will take you to the Bhagsunag Temple.
