In the year, 2000, Anurag Singh Thakur was elected as the 4th President of HPCA. At that time, there was only one cricket stadium for Himachal Pradesh, Indira Gandhi Stadium in Una. He took the initiative to create another alternative and use the geography to add one more stadium to promote cricket in the state. Then, in 2003 Dharamshala Cricket Stadium was started with a spread of 16 acres of land. With all modern facilities, the stadium was built. The special attraction of the stadium is its ryegrass because it is the first kind used in an Indian cricket stadium based on the weather conditions of the location.

After ten years of establishment, in 2013, the first international match was conducted between India and England, and the first IPL match was conducted in 2010. In recent times, five international matches were conducted in the World Cup 2023 tournament.
