9 Days Tokyo Kyoto Osaka Hiroshima and Miyajima Japan Tour

9 Days Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka & Hiroshima Tour

8 Nights / 9 Days Tokyo · Kyoto · Nara · Osaka · Hiroshima · Miyajima

Tour Overview

Want Japan’s major cities plus Hiroshima, but not the extra hotel change in Hakone? This 9-day Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima itinerary keeps the route simple. Start in Tokyo, travel directly to Kyoto, stop in Nara, and continue to Osaka.

The final section moves west to Hiroshima and Miyajima before returning to Osaka for departure. It is a useful choice for travellers who care more about cities, history and food than adding a mountain or onsen stay.

Why Choose This Instead of the Golden Route with Hakone?

The answer is simplicity. You stay in fewer regions, avoid the Tokyo-Hakone-Kyoto transfer sequence, and use those days for a fuller Osaka experience plus Hiroshima and Miyajima.

Nara is placed between Kyoto and Osaka rather than handled as a return day trip, and Miyajima receives its own excursion time instead of being squeezed into the Hiroshima arrival day.

The trip can be adjusted around hotel category, private guiding, rail preferences, food interests, museum visits, family travel or extra nights in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or Hiroshima.

What This Trip Does Well:

  • Keeps the route focused on Japan’s main city and cultural centres.
  • Uses Nara as a logical stop between Kyoto and Osaka.
  • Gives Osaka a full day rather than using it only as a transit city.
  • Separates Hiroshima sightseeing from the Miyajima excursion.
  • Returns to Osaka before departure for easier Kansai flight planning.

Best Fit for This Itinerary

This route suits first-time travellers with around nine days who want Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima, but would rather skip Hakone and the Japanese Alps. It also works well for travellers who prioritise urban culture, food and history over mountain scenery.

How the 9 Days Unfold

Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to your hotel. Keep the first evening uncomplicated: check in, eat close to the hotel and give yourself time to adjust after the international flight.

If you arrive early, choose one nearby district for a short walk instead of trying to begin the full sightseeing programme immediately.

This route is city-focused, so the first two nights stay in Tokyo before the journey continues west.

Today’s Focus:

  • Arrival assistance and hotel transfer.
  • A gentle first evening after the flight.
  • Two-night Tokyo base before travelling to Kansai.

Overnight stay in Tokyo.

Arrival in Tokyo on a 9 day Japan city tour

Spend your full Tokyo day mixing one traditional district with one or two modern neighbourhoods. Asakusa and Senso-ji work well in the morning, followed by central Tokyo and later Shibuya or Shinjuku.

Trying to see every famous Tokyo district in one day usually means too much time on trains. A better approach is to choose areas that tell different stories about the city and leave room for food, shopping or a café stop.

If Tokyo is your main interest, you can add extra nights through our Tokyo tours rather than overloading this day.

Today’s Focus:

  • Historic Asakusa and Senso-ji.
  • Modern Tokyo in Shibuya, Shinjuku or another preferred district.
  • A balanced city day with time to explore on foot.

Overnight stay in Tokyo.

Tokyo sightseeing on a 9 day Japan itinerary

Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto by intercity rail. This is the longest single transfer in the first half of the trip, so the afternoon is intentionally lighter.

After check-in, head out for an introductory walk through Gion, Yasaka Shrine or the lanes of Higashiyama if time allows.

The main temple and shrine programme is kept for the following day, which makes the transition from Tokyo much more comfortable.

Today’s Focus:

  • Intercity rail journey to Kyoto.
  • First look at a traditional Kyoto district.
  • Relaxed arrival-day sightseeing.

Overnight stay in Kyoto.

Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto on a Japan city itinerary

Use the day to explore Kyoto’s cultural core. A sensible first-time plan can include Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Higashiyama and one additional temple or garden.

Kyoto is most enjoyable when you walk between nearby sights rather than treating every temple as a separate transport stop. Leave time for traditional streets, small shops and a relaxed lunch.

The day can be adjusted around tea culture, crafts or gardens if you prefer fewer major landmarks and more local experiences.

Today’s Focus:

  • Fushimi Inari.
  • Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama.
  • Traditional streets and cultural neighbourhoods.

Check out of Kyoto and travel to Nara. Visit Nara Park, Todai-ji and the surrounding heritage area before continuing onward to Osaka.

Using Nara as a stop between Kyoto and Osaka is more efficient than backtracking to Kyoto after the excursion.

Arrive in Osaka later in the day. Dotonbori is an easy evening option if you want street food, neon-lit city views and a lively first impression.

Today’s Focus:

  • Nara Park and Todai-ji.
  • Cultural stop without unnecessary backtracking.
  • Evening arrival in Osaka.

Overnight stay in Osaka.

Nara sightseeing between Kyoto and Osaka

Spend the day enjoying Osaka at a looser pace than Kyoto. Choose a few highlights such as Osaka Castle, Umeda, Namba, Shinsekai or another neighbourhood that suits your interests.

Food is part of the sightseeing here, so it makes sense to leave room for local dishes rather than filling the entire day with attractions.

This is also a useful day for shopping or a slower afternoon before the trip continues to Hiroshima.

Today’s Focus:

  • Osaka Castle or another major city landmark.
  • Namba, Dotonbori or Shinsekai.
  • Free time for food and shopping.

Overnight stay in Osaka.

Osaka food and neighbourhood sightseeing

Travel west by rail to Hiroshima. After check-in, visit Peace Memorial Park and the surrounding historical sites at a respectful, unhurried pace.

This part of the itinerary is deliberately not combined with Miyajima on the same day. Giving Hiroshima its own afternoon allows the visit to feel meaningful rather than rushed.

Keep the evening open for dinner and rest before the island excursion tomorrow.

Today’s Focus:

  • High-speed rail journey to Hiroshima.
  • Peace Memorial Park and historical context.
  • Unhurried first afternoon in Hiroshima.

Overnight stay in Hiroshima.

Take the morning and early afternoon for Miyajima. Walk around the Itsukushima Shrine area, enjoy the island atmosphere and leave time for the waterfront rather than rushing straight back.

Ferry times, tides and local conditions can affect the exact order of the day, so the programme should remain flexible.

Return to Hiroshima and continue to Osaka for the final night. Ending in Osaka makes departure through Kansai more convenient for many travellers.

Today’s Focus:

  • Miyajima island excursion.
  • Itsukushima Shrine area and coastal scenery.
  • Return to Osaka for the final night.

Overnight stay in Osaka.

Miyajima excursion before returning to Osaka

After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.

If your flight departs later in the day, keep the final morning simple with a local walk, shopping stop or relaxed meal near your hotel.

The 9-day route finishes after linking Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima and Miyajima in a straightforward east-to-west journey.

Today’s Focus:

  • Departure transfer from Osaka.
  • Flexible final morning depending on flight time.
  • End of the 8-night / 9-day Japan journey.

Tour ends in Osaka.
