Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
Not every first trip to Japan has to start in Tokyo. This 8-day western Japan itinerary is built for travellers arriving through the Kansai region or anyone who wants to focus on Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Hiroshima.
The route avoids a Tokyo detour and uses the available eight days where they matter most: two nights in Osaka at the start, three nights around Kyoto, a Hiroshima stay with Miyajima, and a final Osaka night before departure.
For travellers flying into Kansai or connecting from another Asian destination, starting in Osaka can save both time and unnecessary long-distance travel. It also puts Nara and Kyoto close at hand from the beginning of the trip.
Nara is placed between Osaka and Kyoto, while Miyajima is kept separate from the Hiroshima arrival day. These choices make the itinerary feel less rushed without adding extra nights.
The route can be customised around hotel category, private guiding, rail preferences, food experiences, extra Kyoto time or additional nights in Hiroshima.
This itinerary works well for travellers who have already visited Tokyo, are arriving through Osaka, or simply prefer a shorter cultural journey concentrated in Kansai and western Japan.
Arrive in Osaka and transfer to your hotel. This itinerary starts in Kansai rather than Tokyo, which makes it useful for travellers who want to focus on western Japan or are arriving through the Osaka region.
Keep the first evening easy. After check-in, head out for dinner around Namba or Dotonbori if you feel rested, but there is no need to begin the full sightseeing programme immediately.
Starting in Osaka also avoids crossing Japan before the trip has properly begun.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
Spend the day getting to know Osaka beyond its neon streets. A balanced first-time route can include Osaka Castle, a city viewpoint, Namba and one neighbourhood such as Shinsekai or Umeda.
Food is part of the experience here, so leave time for a proper lunch or evening meal instead of filling the day with back-to-back attractions.
If you want more time in the city, explore our Osaka tours and extend the stay by a night.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
Check out of Osaka and travel to Nara. Visit Nara Park, Todai-ji and the surrounding heritage area before continuing to Kyoto later in the day.
Using Nara as a stop between Osaka and Kyoto is efficient and avoids backtracking. It also gives the journey a cultural shift before you arrive in Kyoto.
After checking in, take a short evening walk around Gion or the nearby traditional streets if time allows.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Spend a full day exploring Kyoto. A strong first-time route can include Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and the Higashiyama district.
Kyoto is more rewarding when you group nearby sights and spend time walking through traditional streets instead of treating every temple as a separate transport stop.
If tea, crafts or gardens interest you, replace one major landmark with a cultural experience rather than extending the day late into the evening.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Use the second full Kyoto day for Arashiyama and western Kyoto. The bamboo grove, riverside and temple gardens create a different atmosphere from the previous day.
Keep the afternoon flexible. A garden, café, local shopping street or extra temple can be added depending on your pace.
Two full Kyoto days make the itinerary more comfortable and reduce the common problem of trying to see the city in one rushed circuit.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Leave Kyoto for Hiroshima. After checking in, spend the afternoon around Peace Memorial Park and the surrounding historical sites.
Do not combine Hiroshima and Miyajima into one rushed arrival day. Giving the city its own afternoon allows the historical context to be absorbed properly.
Keep the evening relaxed with dinner near the hotel before tomorrow’s island excursion.
Overnight stay in Hiroshima.
Visit Miyajima in the morning and spend time around the Itsukushima Shrine area, waterfront and island lanes. The experience is better when you allow time to walk rather than treating it as a single photo stop.
Ferry schedules, tides and local operating conditions can affect the exact order of the visit, so keep the day flexible.
Return to Hiroshima and continue to Osaka for the final night. This places you close to the main Kansai departure options tomorrow.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.
If your departure is later in the day, keep the morning local with a relaxed breakfast, short shopping stop or walk near the hotel.
The 8-day western Japan route ends after combining Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima without requiring a Tokyo arrival or departure.
Tour ends in Osaka.
