7 Days Hokkaido Tour with Sapporo Otaru Furano and Biei

7 Days Hokkaido: Sapporo, Otaru, Furano & Biei

6 Nights / 7 Days Sapporo · Otaru · Furano · Biei · Sapporo

Tour Overview

One week in Hokkaido should feel spacious, not like a race between distant towns. This 7-day Hokkaido itinerary keeps the route deliberately focused: three nights in Sapporo, an easy day trip to Otaru, two nights around Furano and Biei, then a final night back in Sapporo.

It is a strong first Hokkaido trip because it balances city life with the countryside without asking you to change hotels every night. Sapporo gives you food, markets and urban convenience; Otaru adds a smaller historic port atmosphere; Furano and Biei bring the open landscapes that many travellers imagine when they think of northern Japan.

What This One-Week Route Gets Right

Hokkaido is large, and map distances can make travellers overly ambitious. Trying to add Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei, Noboribetsu, Hakodate and eastern Hokkaido into one week would spend too much of the trip in transit.

This itinerary does the opposite. Otaru is treated as a day trip, Furano receives two nights, and the final night returns to Sapporo so departure day stays uncomplicated.

The trip can be customised around private vehicle travel, rail connections, hotel category, photography interests, family travel and seasonal sightseeing. For more options, see our Hokkaido tours.

Season Changes the Experience

  • Summer can bring flower fields and long countryside days.
  • Autumn changes the landscape into a foliage-focused route.
  • Winter requires slower travel and a very different daily plan.
  • Shoulder seasons may be quieter but some attractions can operate differently.
  • The route should be adjusted to the actual month rather than sold as one fixed experience.

Who Will Enjoy This Itinerary Most?

This route works well for first-time Hokkaido visitors, couples, families and photographers who want a manageable one-week trip with both Sapporo and the central countryside. Travellers who want hot springs or a deeper winter itinerary should add Noboribetsu or extend the trip.

One Week in Hokkaido: Day by Day

Arrive in Sapporo and transfer to your hotel. One week in Hokkaido is enough for a rewarding first visit, but only if the route stays realistic. That is why the opening day is deliberately simple.

After check-in, take an easy walk around the station area or Odori Park if you still have energy. Otherwise, settle in and enjoy a relaxed dinner nearby.

You will stay three nights in Sapporo before moving into the countryside, so there is no need to rush into sightseeing immediately.

Traveller Takeaway:

  • Arrival assistance and hotel transfer.
  • Easy first evening in Sapporo.
  • Three-night city base before the rural section.

Overnight stay in Sapporo.

Arrival in Sapporo on a 7 day Hokkaido tour

Spend the day exploring Sapporo at an easy pace. A practical first-time route can include Odori Park, the historic clock tower area, a local market and one viewpoint or neighbourhood depending on your interests.

Sapporo is not a city that needs to be over-scheduled. Food is part of the experience here, so leave room for lunch, a café stop or an evening meal built around Hokkaido produce.

If you want to spend longer in the city, browse our Sapporo tours and add a night rather than squeezing in too many places today.

Traveller Takeaway:

  • Central Sapporo sightseeing.
  • Local market or food experience.
  • Flexible city day with time to explore at your own pace.

Sapporo sightseeing during a one week Hokkaido itinerary

Take a day trip to Otaru, a compact port city that offers a very different atmosphere from Sapporo. The canal district, converted warehouses and smaller streets make it easy to explore on foot.

Do not turn Otaru into a hurried photo stop. Walk the canal area, browse local glass or music-box shops if they interest you, and leave enough time for lunch or coffee before returning.

Staying in the same Sapporo hotel tonight is intentional. On a seven-day trip, avoiding an extra check-in gives you more usable travel time.

Traveller Takeaway:

  • Otaru Canal and historic warehouse district.
  • Local shops, cafés and waterfront atmosphere.
  • Return to the same Sapporo hotel.

Overnight stay in Sapporo.

Otaru canal day trip from Sapporo in Hokkaido

Leave Sapporo and head into central Hokkaido toward Furano. The scenery becomes more open as the route moves away from the capital and into farmland, hills and smaller communities.

After arrival, keep the afternoon flexible. Depending on the season, you might visit a local farm, enjoy a scenic drive, stop for regional produce or simply take in the countryside.

Furano changes dramatically through the year. Summer flowers, autumn colour, snow-covered winter scenery and quieter shoulder seasons all create different experiences, so the day should be adjusted to your travel month.

Traveller Takeaway:

  • Travel from Sapporo into central Hokkaido.
  • First look at Furano's rural landscapes.
  • Seasonal sightseeing rather than a fixed year-round programme.

Overnight stay in Furano.

Furano countryside on a 7 day Hokkaido tour

Spend the full day around Furano and Biei. This is the most landscape-focused day of the trip, so the value comes from moving slowly through the countryside rather than trying to collect attractions.

Depending on season and road conditions, the day can include Biei's rolling fields, viewpoints, the Blue Pond area, farm roads or other scenic stops. Some places are strongly seasonal, so the exact order should remain flexible.

Travellers often associate Furano only with lavender, but that is too narrow. The region is worth visiting for its wider rural setting, mountain backdrop and seasonal changes throughout the year.

Traveller Takeaway:

  • Furano and Biei countryside.
  • Seasonal farm, landscape and viewpoint stops.
  • Flexible routing based on weather and time of year.

Overnight stay in Furano.

Biei and Furano landscapes on a Hokkaido itinerary

Enjoy a slower morning in Furano before returning to Sapporo for the final night. This is a deliberate routing choice, not just a transfer.

Ending back in the main gateway city makes departure day easier and gives you a final evening for shopping, a favourite meal or one part of Sapporo you did not have time to see earlier.

For travellers who want to expand this week into a longer northern Japan journey, our Hokkaido tours can add places such as Noboribetsu, Asahikawa or other seasonal regions.

Traveller Takeaway:

  • Relaxed morning in Furano.
  • Return to Sapporo before the flight day.
  • Free final evening for food, shopping or rest.

Overnight stay in Sapporo.

Return to Sapporo after Furano and Biei

After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.

If your flight is later in the day, keep the morning close to the hotel rather than adding a distant excursion. Hokkaido distances can be deceptive, so a relaxed final morning is usually the safer choice.

Your seven-day Hokkaido journey ends after combining Sapporo, Otaru, Furano and Biei in a route that gives both city and countryside enough time to feel worthwhile.

Traveller Takeaway:

  • Departure transfer from Sapporo.
  • Simple final morning.
  • End of the 6-night / 7-day Hokkaido itinerary.
