One week in Hokkaido should feel spacious, not like a race between distant towns. This 7-day Hokkaido itinerary keeps the route deliberately focused: three nights in Sapporo, an easy day trip to Otaru, two nights around Furano and Biei, then a final night back in Sapporo.
It is a strong first Hokkaido trip because it balances city life with the countryside without asking you to change hotels every night. Sapporo gives you food, markets and urban convenience; Otaru adds a smaller historic port atmosphere; Furano and Biei bring the open landscapes that many travellers imagine when they think of northern Japan.
What This One-Week Route Gets Right
Hokkaido is large, and map distances can make travellers overly ambitious. Trying to add Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei, Noboribetsu, Hakodate and eastern Hokkaido into one week would spend too much of the trip in transit.
This itinerary does the opposite. Otaru is treated as a day trip, Furano receives two nights, and the final night returns to Sapporo so departure day stays uncomplicated.

One Week in Hokkaido: Day by Day
Arrive in Sapporo and transfer to your hotel. One week in Hokkaido is enough for a rewarding first visit, but only if the route stays realistic. That is why the opening day is deliberately simple.
After check-in, take an easy walk around the station area or Odori Park if you still have energy. Otherwise, settle in and enjoy a relaxed dinner nearby.
You will stay three nights in Sapporo before moving into the countryside, so there is no need to rush into sightseeing immediately.

Sapporo is not a city that needs to be over-scheduled. Food is part of the experience here, so leave room for lunch, a café stop or an evening meal built around Hokkaido produce.

Overnight stay in Sapporo.
Take a day trip to Otaru, a compact port city that offers a very different atmosphere from Sapporo. The canal district, converted warehouses and smaller streets make it easy to explore on foot.
Do not turn Otaru into a hurried photo stop. Walk the canal area, browse local glass or music-box shops if they interest you, and leave enough time for lunch or coffee before returning.
Staying in the same Sapporo hotel tonight is intentional. On a seven-day trip, avoiding an extra check-in gives you more usable travel time.

Furano changes dramatically through the year. Summer flowers, autumn colour, snow-covered winter scenery and quieter shoulder seasons all create different experiences, so the day should be adjusted to your travel month.

Depending on season and road conditions, the day can include Biei's rolling fields, viewpoints, the Blue Pond area, farm roads or other scenic stops. Some places are strongly seasonal, so the exact order should remain flexible.
Travellers often associate Furano only with lavender, but that is too narrow. The region is worth visiting for its wider rural setting, mountain backdrop and seasonal changes throughout the year.
