5 Days Tokyo Mt Fuji and Hakone Tour

5 Days Tokyo & Mt. Fuji Tour with Hakone

4 Nights / 5 Days Tokyo · Mt. Fuji · Hakone · Tokyo

Tour Overview

Five days is not enough to see all of Japan, but it is enough for a good Tokyo and Mt. Fuji trip if the route stays focused. This 5-day Tokyo and Mt. Fuji itinerary uses Tokyo as the main base, adds one overnight around Hakone, and returns to Tokyo before departure.

That simple structure gives you one proper Tokyo sightseeing day, a change of scenery around Mt. Fuji and Hakone, and a final Tokyo night without asking you to pack and change hotels every day. It is a useful short Japan itinerary for stopovers, business travellers adding a few leisure days, or first-time visitors with limited time.

What Five Days Can Realistically Cover

The biggest mistake on a five-day Japan trip is trying to include Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Mt. Fuji. The transport is possible, but the holiday quickly becomes dominated by check-outs, stations and luggage.

This route deliberately stays around Tokyo and the Fuji-Hakone region. You still get the contrast of a major city, mountain scenery, lakes and an optional onsen stay without losing most of the trip to long-distance transfers.

For more mountain-focused ideas, explore our Mt. Fuji tours. The itinerary can also be customised around private guiding, hotel category, ryokan stays, family travel or an extra night in Tokyo.

Why Return to Tokyo on Day 4?

  • It removes a long transfer from the departure morning.
  • You get a final evening for shopping, food or a missed neighbourhood.
  • Flight-day planning becomes simpler.
  • You avoid depending on mountain-area transport immediately before an international flight.
  • The itinerary still includes one overnight outside Tokyo.

Who Is This Short Tour Best For?

Choose this route if you have four nights in Japan and want more than Tokyo alone, but do not have enough time for a proper Kyoto or Osaka extension. If you can add two or three days, a Tokyo-Kyoto itinerary becomes a better next step.

Five Days, Planned Sensibly

Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to your hotel. With only five days in Japan, it may be tempting to start sightseeing immediately, but the better decision is to keep the first evening light and protect your energy for the full day ahead.

After check-in, take a short walk near the hotel, have dinner locally and get used to the time difference. Tokyo will make more sense after a proper night of rest.

You stay two nights in the city before heading toward the Mt. Fuji and Hakone region.

Short-Trip Planning Notes:

  • Arrival assistance and hotel transfer.
  • Easy first evening after the international flight.
  • Two-night Tokyo base before the mountain stay.

Overnight stay in Tokyo.

Arrival in Tokyo on a 5 day Tokyo and Mt Fuji tour

Use your only complete Tokyo sightseeing day carefully. A balanced first-time route can combine Asakusa and Senso-ji with one modern district such as Shibuya or Shinjuku.

The goal is not to see the entire capital in a day. Tokyo is too large for that. Group nearby areas, leave time for lunch and choose a few places that show different sides of the city.

If you want to extend the city portion, see our Tokyo tours and add another night rather than trying to force more into this day.

Short-Trip Planning Notes:

  • Asakusa and Senso-ji.
  • One major modern Tokyo neighbourhood.
  • Efficient sightseeing without excessive cross-city travel.

Overnight stay in Tokyo.

Tokyo sightseeing during a short Japan itinerary

Leave Tokyo for the Mt. Fuji and Hakone region. Depending on weather and local operating conditions, the day can include a Fuji-viewing area, Lake Ashi, Owakudani or another scenic stop.

Clear views of Mt. Fuji are possible in good conditions, but no itinerary should promise them. Cloud, haze and changing weather can affect visibility at any time of year.

Stay overnight in Hakone or nearby. Travellers who want to focus more on the mountain region can also explore our Mt. Fuji tours.

Short-Trip Planning Notes:

  • Travel from Tokyo toward Mt. Fuji and Hakone.
  • Lake, mountain and volcanic scenery.
  • Possible Mt. Fuji views in clear weather.
  • Optional ryokan or onsen-style overnight.

Overnight stay in Hakone or the Mt. Fuji region.

Mt Fuji and Hakone scenery on a 5 day Japan tour

Enjoy a relaxed morning in Hakone before returning to Tokyo. Depending on the previous day’s weather, you may use the morning for one scenic stop that you skipped earlier.

Back in Tokyo, keep the afternoon flexible for shopping, a neighbourhood you missed, a food experience or simply an easy final evening.

Returning to Tokyo for the last night is practical on a short trip because it reduces pressure on the departure day and keeps you close to the main international gateways.

Short-Trip Planning Notes:

  • Relaxed morning in Hakone.
  • Return to Tokyo before departure day.
  • Free final afternoon or evening in the capital.

Overnight stay in Tokyo.

Return to Tokyo after Hakone on a 5 day Japan itinerary

After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.

If your flight is later in the day, keep the morning close to your hotel rather than adding a distant attraction. A short shopping stop, local breakfast or neighbourhood walk is usually the better use of the final hours.

The five-day journey ends after combining one strong Tokyo sightseeing day with an overnight in the Mt. Fuji and Hakone region, without turning the trip into a sequence of rushed transfers.

Short-Trip Planning Notes:

  • Departure transfer from Tokyo.
  • Simple final morning.
  • End of the 4-night / 5-day Tokyo and Mt. Fuji itinerary.

Tour ends in Tokyo.
