Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
Some Japan itineraries treat the Alps as a one-night detour between Tokyo and Kyoto. This 12-day Japan Alps, Kyoto and Hiroshima itinerary does the opposite. It gives central Japan enough time to matter, with Matsumoto, two nights in Takayama, Shirakawa-go and two nights in Kanazawa before the route continues west.
After the mountain towns, spend two nights around Kyoto, then continue to Hiroshima and Miyajima before finishing in Osaka. The route is designed for travellers who want smaller cities and heritage districts as much as Japan's major urban centres.
Takayama and Kanazawa are often reduced to quick overnight stops, which means travellers arrive late, see a few streets, and leave again the next morning. Two-night stays give both places a proper full day and make the journey feel less like a sequence of transfers.
Shirakawa-go also fits naturally between Takayama and Kanazawa, so the route moves west without unnecessary backtracking. Kyoto and Hiroshima then add two completely different layers of history and culture.
The itinerary can be customised around hotel category, private guiding, rail preferences, luggage forwarding, cultural activities, food interests and additional nights.
This is a strong choice for culturally curious first-time visitors, repeat travellers, photographers and anyone who wants the Japanese Alps to be a real part of the journey rather than a short scenic pause between Tokyo and Kyoto.
Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to your hotel. This is the start of a longer overland journey, so the first evening is intentionally light.
After check-in, have dinner nearby and take a short walk if you feel rested. The goal is to arrive in the Japanese Alps with energy, not to exhaust yourself in Tokyo on day one.
You stay two nights in the capital before heading inland toward Matsumoto and Takayama.
Overnight stay in Tokyo.
Spend your full Tokyo day seeing two contrasting sides of the city. Asakusa and Senso-ji are a natural choice for the traditional side, followed later by Shibuya, Shinjuku or another modern district.
Because this itinerary is about more than Tokyo, avoid turning the day into a marathon. A few well-chosen neighbourhoods will give you a better introduction than spending most of the day changing trains.
If you want more time in the capital, add a night through our Tokyo tours rather than compressing the Alps section.
Overnight stay in Tokyo.
Leave Tokyo for Matsumoto and enter the Japanese Alps region. The move inland changes the character of the trip immediately, with a smaller city scale and mountain scenery replacing the capital.
After arrival, explore Matsumoto Castle and the surrounding streets if timing allows. Keep the afternoon manageable, because the route continues deeper into the Alps tomorrow.
Matsumoto works well here as a gateway, not as a place you need to overload with sightseeing.
Overnight stay in Matsumoto.
Travel onward to Takayama, one of the most rewarding smaller-city stops in central Japan.
After check-in, walk through the Sanmachi old-town area, browse local shops and take time over dinner rather than turning the afternoon into a long list of attractions.
Takayama is best appreciated at a slower pace. The wooden streets, local food and compact scale are exactly why it deserves more than a quick transit stop.
Overnight stay in Takayama.
Spend a second day in Takayama without changing hotels. Start with the morning market and old town, then choose a museum, craft stop, countryside experience or simply more time exploring on foot.
This extra night is what separates a deeper Alps itinerary from a rushed one. You are not arriving late and leaving early just to say you have been there.
If you prefer an active day, a countryside walk or seasonal cycling experience can be considered, subject to weather and local conditions.
Overnight stay in Takayama.
Leave Takayama for Shirakawa-go and continue onward to Kanazawa.
Allow enough time in Shirakawa-go to walk through the village and understand the traditional gassho-style farmhouses rather than treating the stop as a quick photograph.
Arrive in Kanazawa later in the day and settle in for two nights. This keeps the route moving west without backtracking.
Overnight stay in Kanazawa.
Give Kanazawa a full day. Kenrokuen, the castle area and either Nagamachi or Higashi Chaya make a balanced route without needing to rush.
The city is also known for traditional crafts, so a workshop or specialist visit can add more value than simply adding another landmark.
This is one of the quieter full days on the itinerary and an important contrast with Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima.
Overnight stay in Kanazawa.
Travel to Kyoto and check in for two nights.
After arrival, keep the afternoon or evening light with Gion, Yasaka Shrine or Higashiyama if timing allows.
Rail routings and transfer patterns can change, so the exact connection should be checked for your travel date rather than fixed too far in advance.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Use your full Kyoto day for a focused cultural route. Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama are a strong combination for first-time visitors.
Do not try to fit every famous temple into one day. The old streets, gardens, tea stops and time spent walking are part of the experience.
If you prefer something more personal, substitute one landmark for a tea, craft or guided cultural activity.
Overnight stay in Kyoto.
Leave Kyoto for Hiroshima. After check-in, spend the afternoon around Peace Memorial Park and the surrounding historical sites.
This day is deliberately not combined with Miyajima. Hiroshima’s modern history deserves its own time and a different pace from the island excursion.
Stay overnight in Hiroshima and keep the evening open for dinner and rest.
Overnight stay in Hiroshima.
Spend the morning and early afternoon on Miyajima. Walk around the Itsukushima Shrine area, waterfront and island lanes, allowing enough time for the place to feel like more than a photo stop.
Ferry times, tides and local conditions can affect the order of the visit, so the day should stay flexible.
Return to Hiroshima and continue to Osaka for the final night, placing you close to the main Kansai departure options.
Overnight stay in Osaka.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.
If your departure is later in the day, keep the morning local with a relaxed breakfast, shopping stop or short walk rather than adding a distant excursion.
The 12-day journey ends after linking Tokyo, Matsumoto, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Miyajima and Osaka in a route that gives the Japanese Alps genuine depth.
Tour ends in Osaka.
