Yamunotri Travel Guide – Sacred Source of the Yamuna
Yamunotri, one of the sacred Char Dham shrines in Uttarakhand, is the source of the holy Yamuna River and a deeply revered pilgrimage site for Hindus. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of about 3,293 meters, Yamunotri offers not only spiritual fulfillment but also mesmerizing Himalayan scenery, hot springs, and trekking adventures. Devotees visit here seeking blessings from Goddess Yamuna, believed to be the divine daughter of the Sun God and sister of Yama, the Lord of Death.
Why Yamunotri is Famous
Yamunotri is famous as the origin point of the Yamuna River, one of India’s most sacred rivers. It forms the westernmost part of the Char Dham Yatra circuit. The Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, is the main attraction here. The natural hot springs near the temple, especially the Surya Kund, are considered auspicious for cooking rice and potatoes, which are later offered as prasad.
