Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 8 Days Buddhist Circuit Bihar & Uttar Pradesh is designed for travellers who want a focused pilgrimage through the core sacred sites of eastern and northern India without adding Delhi or Nepal. The journey connects Varanasi and Sarnath with Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Vaishali and Kushinagar.
The route follows the central story of the Buddha's teaching and pilgrimage landscape: Sarnath for the first teaching, Bodh Gaya for enlightenment, Rajgir for important teachings and monastic associations, Nalanda for Buddhist scholarship, Vaishali for the later-life Buddhist tradition and Kushinagar for Mahaparinirvana. It is one of the most practical shorter routes within our India Buddhist tour collection.
The itinerary begins in Varanasi because it offers the most convenient base for a dedicated visit to Sarnath. Rather than combining Sarnath with a rushed road transfer on the same day, the programme gives the first Buddhist site proper time for Dhamek Stupa, the archaeological zone and quiet reflection.
Two nights in Bodh Gaya provide a better pilgrimage rhythm around the Mahabodhi Temple Complex, Bodhi Tree, international monasteries and Sujata-related sites. Rajgir and Nalanda are then combined into one full heritage day before continuing towards Vaishali.
The final section reaches Kushinagar for the Mahaparinirvana Temple and Ramabhar Stupa. Travellers who want to add Shravasti and Lucknow should choose the 10 Days Complete Buddhist Circuit India Tour, while those wishing to add Lumbini can continue with the 12 Days India & Nepal Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour.
Arrive in Varanasi, where your local representative will meet you at the airport or railway station.
Transfer privately to your hotel and allow time to settle in after the journey.
The first day is kept relatively light so the Buddhist circuit can begin at a comfortable pace the following morning.
Your guide or travel coordinator will review the route, expected road sectors and practical etiquette for Buddhist archaeological sites, temples and monasteries.
If arrival is early, a short cultural orientation or Ganges-side visit can be arranged according to your interests.
Overnight stay in Varanasi.
After breakfast, drive to Sarnath, one of the principal Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in India.
Visit Dhamek Stupa and the surrounding archaeological area associated with the Buddha's first teaching after enlightenment.
Continue to Chaukhandi Stupa, selected monastery areas and the museum or interpretation facilities according to current opening conditions.
Your guide will explain the significance of the Deer Park, the first turning of the Dharma wheel and the formation of the early Sangha.
Allow time for quiet reflection before returning to Varanasi. Keep the evening free or add a cultural programme if desired.

The road journey connects Sarnath, associated with the first teaching, with the place where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment.
On arrival, check in at your hotel and allow time for lunch and rest.
Later, make an introductory visit to the Mahabodhi Temple Complex if current opening hours and your energy level permit.
Keep the evening quiet and unhurried before the full Bodh Gaya pilgrimage day.

Overnight stay in Bodh Gaya.
After breakfast, travel to Rajgir.
Visit Griddhakuta, also known as Vulture's Peak, and selected Buddhist sites such as Venuvana or the Peace Pagoda according to current access and time.
Your guide will explain Rajgir's importance as a major setting for the Buddha's teachings and early Buddhist community.

Keep the afternoon relatively light because the following day involves the longer road journey to Kushinagar.
Overnight stay in Vaishali / Patna area.
Leave after breakfast for the private road journey to Kushinagar.
This is one of the longer overland sectors of the itinerary, so the day is intentionally kept simple with practical rest stops along the route.

Keep the evening quiet before the full pilgrimage visit the following morning.
