Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 12 Days India & Nepal Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour follows one of the most meaningful Buddhist routes in South Asia, linking the major sacred places associated with the Buddha's life and teachings. The journey connects Shravasti, Lumbini, Kushinagar, Vaishali, Nalanda, Rajgir, Bodh Gaya, Varanasi and Sarnath.
The route is especially suitable for travellers who want to include both the Buddha's birthplace at Lumbini and the core Buddhist circuit of India in one private pilgrimage. It combines sacred sites, archaeological remains, monastery traditions and time for reflection, while keeping the overland sequence practical and logically connected.
The pilgrimage begins in Delhi and continues via Lucknow to Shravasti, where the Buddha spent many monsoon retreats at Jetavana. From there, the route crosses into Nepal for two nights in Lumbini, giving enough time for the Maya Devi Temple, Sacred Garden, Ashokan Pillar and international monastic zone.
Returning to India, the journey continues to Kushinagar, associated with the Buddha's Mahaparinirvana, and then through Vaishali, Nalanda and Rajgir. These sites form an important bridge between the Buddha's later life, monastic communities and the long tradition of Buddhist learning in eastern India.
Two nights in Bodh Gaya allow the Mahabodhi Temple and Bodhi Tree to be experienced at a slower pace. The pilgrimage finishes in Varanasi with a dedicated visit to Sarnath, where the Buddha delivered his first teaching.
