10 Days Chhattisgarh Heritage & Tribal Culture Tour
For travellers who want to understand Chhattisgarh beyond its best-known waterfall, this ten-day itinerary brings together archaeology, temples, craft traditions and the green landscapes of Bastar. Start in Raipur with an excursion to historic Sirpur, where Hindu and Buddhist remains tell a layered story of South Kosala. Continue to Kawardha and the carved Shiva temple of Bhoramdeo before heading south through Kanker and Kondagaon, a district where bell-metal, iron and other craft skills remain part of local livelihoods.
Jagdalpur then becomes your base for the natural side of Bastar: the Indravati River at Chitrakote, the cascading steps of Tirathgarh and accessible stretches of Kanger Valley. Unlike a very short circuit, this route allows separate days for the two waterfall areas and does not hide the long return drive to Raipur. Visits involving artisans or communities are arranged through willing hosts, with appropriate compensation where required and permission for photographs. We do not promise ceremonial performances or unrestricted village access. The private pace, optional stops and carefully spaced overnights make this an engaging introduction for curious international travellers.
Tour Highlights
- Historic Sirpur: temple architecture and Buddhist archaeological sites.
- Kawardha and Bhoramdeo Temple in the Kabirdham hills.
- An arranged introduction to Kondagaon metal and craft traditions.
- Kanker countryside and Bastar cultural heritage.
- Chitrakote, Tirathgarh and Kanger Valley landscapes with time to explore.
10-Day Chhattisgarh Itinerary
Meet your driver on arrival at Raipur Airport or the railway station. Check into the hotel and settle in, particularly if you have arrived via an international connection. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy an easy orientation walk or a regional meal. Your guide will outline the route and its longer road journeys. Keeping arrival day light is intentional: the following days include archaeological visits, hill-country drives and two separate waterfall outings.
Overnight in Raipur.

Travel to Sirpur, near the Mahanadi River, for a focused heritage excursion. Explore Lakshman Temple and the remains of ancient Buddhist and other religious structures. Give yourself time to hear about Sirpur's importance in historic South Kosala; the site is more interesting with interpretation than as a checklist of ruins. Take a break for lunch and return to Raipur by evening. Keeping Raipur as the base avoids an unnecessary overnight hotel change before the journey to Kawardha.
Overnight in Raipur.

Drive to Kawardha and check in at your accommodation. The road moves away from the capital into agricultural and hill-fringe landscapes. In the afternoon, explore an accessible part of the town or local market with a guide, depending on arrival time and energy. This is not a day for a packed temple circuit. Instead, get ready for the next morning's slower exploration of Bhoramdeo and the forest-edge countryside surrounding it.
Overnight in Kawardha.
Begin at Bhoramdeo Temple to appreciate its carved stone walls and continuing religious importance. Add another nearby heritage site if it is open and reachable, then take a scenic drive towards the Chilphi Valley area. Views, short walks and comfort breaks can be adjusted to the weather and your group's interests. A sanctuary visit should not be confused with an included safari: any protected forest entry would require separate permission. Return to Kawardha for a second night.
Overnight in Kawardha.

Leave Kawardha after breakfast and make the substantial drive south towards Kanker, taking a practical route chosen for current road conditions. Pause for meals and comfort breaks; this is a transport day rather than an opportunity to tick off distant attractions. Arrive in Kanker and check in. If the timing allows, take a short walk or visit a permitted viewpoint near town. Staying here splits the journey towards Bastar into two manageable days instead of one overly ambitious drive.
Overnight in Kanker.

Continue towards Jagdalpur via Kondagaon. With advance arrangements, stop at a workshop where a local artisan can demonstrate techniques such as bell-metal casting or wrought-iron work. The demonstration and any photography take place only with the maker's agreement, and guests are welcome to browse without pressure to buy. Arrive in Jagdalpur later in the day and check in. Enjoy a free evening or short walk in an accessible market area before the nature-focused part of the route begins.
Overnight in Jagdalpur.
Visit Tirathgarh Falls and approved viewpoints in the Kanger Valley area. The stepped cascade and surrounding forest make an appealing contrast to the heritage sites visited earlier in the journey. Some walks involve many steps and slick surfaces, so the guide will adapt the plan to the weather and group's mobility. Cave visits require official access and may be suspended during heavy rains. Return to Jagdalpur to rest in the late afternoon, without scheduling another distant journey.
Overnight in Jagdalpur.
Drive from Jagdalpur to Chitrakote Falls on the Indravati River. The amount of flowing water, mist and the width of the cascade vary throughout the year, so allow time simply to enjoy the view. Stay at marked viewpoints and follow local safety instructions; boating is only a possibility when officially operating. If time and consent permit, your guide may arrange another small cultural stop in the region before returning to Jagdalpur. The evening is left free for packing and a relaxed dinner.
Overnight in Jagdalpur.
After breakfast, travel back north to Raipur. This is a long road day, with rest stops and a flexible arrival time. The tour does not promise extra attractions en route, and a same-day international connection is not recommended. Once in Raipur, check into your hotel and enjoy your final night. This overnight buffer helps account for traffic and keeps the last day calm.
Overnight in Raipur.

Your driver will take you to Raipur Airport or the railway station according to the confirmed schedule. Ten days have linked Sirpur's ancient stone and brick monuments with Kawardha, Kondagaon's living craft traditions and Bastar's waterfalls. If you would rather focus only on Chitrakote and Tirathgarh with fewer total nights, see our 6-day Bastar itinerary.
