The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has given clearance to a proposal to construct a ropeway to the Yamunotri shrine, which will drastically reduce the travel time from five hours to only 10 minutes. This ambitious project will use 3.8 hectares of land and construct a 3.7 km long (aerial distance) ropeway to connect the Yamunotri shrine to Kharsali village.

According to reports, this project has been in the works since 2006, and the locals of Kharsali village have contributed 1.5 hectares of land to the tourism department for this project. However, for various reasons, the project remained stalled for over 16 years.

The new ropeway will benefit tourists and locals as the previous trek of 5 km to reach the shrine from Jankichatti was a difficult journey that caused health problems and casualties. This project will not only boost tourism but will also save lives.

Construction is set to begin this summer, and District Tourism Officer Rahul Chaubey anticipates it will take two years to complete the project. This ropeway will significantly develop the area, making travel to the Yamunotri shrine faster and safer.
