7 Days Tokyo Kyoto and Nara Japan Tour

7 Days Tokyo & Kyoto Tour with Nara

6 Nights / 7 Days Tokyo · Kyoto · Nara

Tour Overview

If you have only one week in Japan, adding too many overnight stops can work against you. This 7-day Tokyo and Kyoto itinerary uses just two hotel bases: three nights in Tokyo and three nights in Kyoto. That gives both cities enough time to feel worthwhile.

A day trip to Nara adds another important cultural destination without creating a third hotel change. The result is a compact first-time Japan route that is easy to understand, easy to customise and far less rushed than trying to cover Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hakone and Hiroshima in seven days.

Two Bases Are Enough

Short Japan trips often become complicated because travellers try to include every famous city. On a seven-day holiday, every hotel change costs time: packing, checking out, finding the station, carrying luggage and waiting to check in again.

This route solves that by giving Tokyo and Kyoto three nights each. Nara is close enough to visit from Kyoto without moving hotels, while Osaka can easily be added later if you have one or two extra days.

The itinerary can be customised around hotel category, private guiding, rail preferences, food experiences, family travel or extra nights in either city.

What You Gain by Keeping It Simple:

  • Only two hotel bases in seven days.
  • Two full sightseeing days in Tokyo.
  • Two full sightseeing days around Kyoto and Nara.
  • Less luggage handling and fewer check-ins.
  • A route that is easy to extend if you have more time.

Is This Better Than Adding Osaka?

If you only have seven days, usually yes. Osaka is easy to add to a longer itinerary, but keeping Kyoto as your Kansai base gives you more cultural depth and avoids turning the final nights into another hotel change. Travellers who care strongly about Osaka food and nightlife can still substitute one Kyoto night or extend the trip.

One Week in Japan: Day by Day

Arrive in Tokyo and transfer to your hotel. With only a week in Japan, the smartest choice on day one is not to squeeze in sightseeing, but to protect your energy for the two full city days ahead.

After check-in, keep the evening close to your hotel. A short neighbourhood walk and an easy dinner are enough for a first introduction to Japan.

You stay three nights in Tokyo, which keeps the first half of the trip simple and avoids early hotel changes.

Why This Works in One Week:

  • Arrival assistance and hotel transfer.
  • No rushed sightseeing after the flight.
  • Three-night Tokyo base.

Arrival in Tokyo on a 7 day Tokyo and Kyoto tour

Start with a traditional side of Tokyo, such as Asakusa and Senso-ji, before moving later to a modern district like Shibuya or Shinjuku.

On a short itinerary, location planning matters. Grouping nearby sights will save more time than trying to visit every famous district in one day.

If you prefer food, art or shopping over standard highlights, our Tokyo tours can be adjusted around your interests.

Why This Works in One Week:

  • Asakusa and Senso-ji.
  • One major modern Tokyo district.
  • Efficient sightseeing with less cross-city travel.

Tokyo sightseeing during a 7 day Japan itinerary

Use the second full day to see a different side of Tokyo. This could mean Meiji Shrine and Harajuku, a museum, a food experience, Ginza, gardens, digital art or simply more time in neighbourhoods you enjoyed yesterday.

This flexible day is especially useful for first-time travellers because Tokyo is too large to enjoy properly through a rigid checklist.

Keep part of the day open. A little unplanned time often becomes more memorable than one extra attraction.

Why This Works in One Week:

  • A second full Tokyo day.
  • Flexible sightseeing based on personal interests.
  • Time for food, shopping or a slower neighbourhood experience.

Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto by intercity rail. With only two hotel bases on this itinerary, the journey is straightforward and easy to follow.

After arrival, check in and take a light walk through Gion, Yasaka Shrine or the nearby traditional streets if time allows.

Avoid planning a full temple circuit on the transfer day. Kyoto receives two full sightseeing days after this.

Why This Works in One Week:

  • Intercity rail journey from Tokyo to Kyoto.
  • Simple two-base itinerary structure.
  • Relaxed first evening in traditional Kyoto.

Overnight stay in Kyoto.

Spend your first full Kyoto day around the city’s eastern cultural districts. Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama make a strong combination for a first visit.

Do not judge Kyoto by how many temples you manage to fit into one day. Walking the old streets, pausing for tea or lunch and spending time in one good garden often creates a better experience.

If you prefer a cultural activity, replace one landmark with a tea, craft or guided neighbourhood experience.

Why This Works in One Week:

  • Fushimi Inari.
  • Kiyomizu-dera and Higashiyama.
  • Traditional streets with time to explore on foot.

Take an easy day trip to Nara. Visit Nara Park, Todai-ji and the surrounding heritage district before returning to Kyoto.

For a seven-day trip, a return excursion makes more sense than changing hotels for one night. You see another historic city without adding luggage handling or another check-in.

Back in Kyoto, enjoy your final evening at a relaxed pace.

Why This Works in One Week:

  • Nara Park and Todai-ji.
  • Historic Buddhist heritage.
  • Return to the same Kyoto hotel.
  • No unnecessary one-night hotel change.

After breakfast, check out and continue to the airport or your next destination in Japan.

If you are flying from the Kansai region, plan the transfer around your actual flight time and leave a comfortable margin. Travellers returning from Tokyo can also connect by rail according to their onward arrangements.

The seven-day trip ends after giving Tokyo and Kyoto enough time to feel like real destinations, with Nara added as a practical cultural day trip.

Why This Works in One Week:

  • Departure or onward rail connection.
  • Flexible final morning depending on your schedule.
  • End of the 6-night / 7-day Japan itinerary.
