7 Days Bihar Tour – Bodh Gaya, Nalanda & Rajgir
Bihar is one of India’s most rewarding places to understand how Buddhist ideas travelled from ancient kingdoms to monasteries across Asia. This seven-day private journey begins in Patna, with a separate visit to Vaishali, before following the route through Nalanda and Rajgir to Bodh Gaya. Rather than fitting all three principal sites into one hurried day, the programme gives Rajgir and Bodh Gaya two nights each. You can explore the monuments with context, pause at sacred places and enjoy time that is not spent in the car.
At Vaishali, the Ashokan pillar and archaeological landscape introduce the Buddha’s later-life associations. Nalanda’s monastic ruins show the scale of a historic centre of learning, while Rajgir combines wooded hills, Buddhist sites and quieter paths. The journey reaches its most reflective point at the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Bodh Gaya, a living pilgrimage centre and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Days are arranged around daylight, opening rules and sensible road breaks. The final return to Patna is a substantial transfer, so an evening departure or additional hotel night is preferable.
Tour Highlights
- Vaishali’s Ashokan pillar and Buddhist relic-stupa landscape.
- Guided exploration of the UNESCO-listed Nalanda Mahavihara ruins.
- Two nights around Rajgir’s historic hills, Venu Vana and Peace Pagoda.
- Two nights in Bodh Gaya for the Mahabodhi Temple and monasteries.
- Private transfers without combining every major site into a single day.
7 Days Bihar Tour – Bodh Gaya, Nalanda & Rajgir – Day-by-Day Itinerary
Meet your driver at Patna Airport or railway station and transfer to your hotel. If you arrive with time and energy, visit Buddha Smriti Park or take a short introduction to the riverfront; keep this flexible because flights and traffic can change. Your guide can explain how the next few days connect Vaishali, the Nalanda university site, Rajgir and Bodh Gaya. Check that you have comfortable shoes and suitable clothing for working monasteries and temple grounds. A light first day is especially useful if you have connected through Delhi or another international gateway.
Overnight in Patna.

Set out towards Vaishali for a day dedicated to its Buddhist heritage. At Kolhua, see the Ashokan pillar and learn about the region’s associations with the Buddha and early Buddhist communities. Continue to the relic-stupa area and other accessible monuments according to opening hours; the museum may be included if open. Rather than racing onward to Nalanda, return to Patna for another night. This creates more space for explanations, photographs and rest stops, and avoids turning the first sightseeing day into a long transfer.
Overnight in Patna.

Leave Patna for Nalanda and explore the archaeological ruins of the historic Mahavihara. Walk past the remains of monastic rooms, courtyards and shrines as your guide describes how teaching and religious life developed here. The excavated complex is extensive and mostly outdoors, so carry sun protection and water. A museum or nearby historical stop may be added when open. Continue to Rajgir, check in and enjoy a quiet evening. For historical context before your visit, read our guide to Bihar’s UNESCO heritage sites.
Overnight in Rajgir.

Spend a full day discovering Rajgir without a long onward journey. Start at Venu Vana and explore selected historical sites linked with the Buddha’s teachings. If the ropeway is operating and everyone is comfortable with it, visit the hilltop Vishwa Shanti Stupa; an alternative low-level sightseeing plan can be arranged. Griddhakuta, also called Vulture’s Peak, is important to Buddhist pilgrims but involves access and walking considerations. Your guide will adapt the sequence to the weather, mobility and shrine activity. Return to the same hotel for a second night.
Overnight in Rajgir.

After breakfast, drive to Bodh Gaya. Settle into your hotel and begin with an unhurried orientation around the Mahabodhi Temple precinct. The temple and Bodhi Tree area remain an active place of worship, so follow security checks, photography rules and directions from staff. A first visit late in the day can be especially peaceful when crowds permit. The objective is not to tick off every monastery; there will be another full day here. Visitors planning a more extensive pilgrimage can compare our 8-day Buddhist Circuit itinerary.
Overnight in Bodh Gaya.

Begin early at the Mahabodhi Temple Complex if local visiting rules allow. With time to walk and sit quietly, the sacred setting becomes more meaningful than a short photo stop. Later visit a selection of international monasteries, whose architecture reflects Buddhist communities from several countries. The Great Buddha Statue can be included if it suits the day. A guide can distinguish the historical significance of the UNESCO site from modern monastery traditions. Travellers who meditate are welcome to plan private reflection time, subject to each location’s rules. Overnight again in Bodh Gaya.
Overnight in Bodh Gaya.

Travel back to Patna after breakfast, allowing a generous buffer for highway traffic, meals and airport formalities. This is a transfer day, not another sightseeing day. Please choose an evening onward departure, or arrange an additional Patna night if your connection is earlier or especially important. The journey closes after linking Vaishali, Nalanda, Rajgir and Bodh Gaya without rushing the key sites. For a much shorter introduction, see our three-day Bodh Gaya, Rajgir and Nalanda tour.
