Discover Madhya Pradesh on an 11-day private journey that brings together royal cities, temple architecture, wildlife and remarkable landscapes. Begin in Gwalior, where a hilltop fort and princely palaces introduce the region’s history, before continuing to the riverside monuments of Orchha. At Khajuraho, spend a full day among intricately carved UNESCO-listed temples, then travel to Bandhavgarh for two planned jeep safaris in tiger country. The route continues to Jabalpur for the marble cliffs of Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls, before reaching Bhopal and the ancient sites of Bhimbetka and Sanchi. With two nights each in Gwalior, Khajuraho, Bandhavgarh and Bhopal, you have time to explore the main attractions rather than changing hotels every morning. The journey is best suited to travellers interested in heritage and nature who are comfortable with a few substantial road transfers. Safari permits, river activities and some monument visits depend on operating conditions, so your final programme is tailored to confirmed dates and bookings.

Tour Highlights

  • Gwalior Fort, Orchha palaces and riverfront cenotaphs.
  • UNESCO-listed Khajuraho temple groups.
  • Two planned Bandhavgarh jeep safaris, subject to permits.
  • Bhedaghat Marble Rocks, Bhimbetka and Sanchi.

11-Day Madhya Pradesh Itinerary

Arrive at Gwalior Airport or railway station, where your driver will meet you for the transfer to your hotel. Settle in and enjoy a relaxed first afternoon; no formal sightseeing is planned around an unconfirmed arrival time. If you arrive early, there is time for a gentle walk or a local meal.

Overnight in Gwalior.

Arrival in Gwalior - Madhya Pradesh tour

Explore Gwalior’s historic landmarks, beginning with the hilltop fort, Man Mandir Palace and the Jain rock carvings along its approaches. Continue to the Jai Vilas Palace Museum for a different view of the city’s royal past. Depending on opening hours and your interests, include Tansen’s Tomb or the Scindia cenotaphs. The fort complex is extensive, so prioritise its principal sights rather than attempting every monument mentioned in a guidebook.

Overnight in Gwalior.

Gwalior Fort and Royal Heritage - Madhya Pradesh tour

Drive to Orchha and check in. Explore Jahangir Mahal and the fort complex, then continue to Ram Raja Temple and the royal cenotaphs beside the Betwa River if time allows. Orchha is particularly enjoyable on foot, with old lanes, palace courtyards and riverside views close together. Temple access and the timing of prayers may affect the order of visits.

Overnight in Orchha.

Gwalior to Orchha - Forts and Betwa River - Madhya Pradesh tour

After breakfast, travel to Khajuraho through the Bundelkhand countryside. Check in at your hotel and enjoy a lighter afternoon following the drive. If the evening sound-and-light show is operating and you would like to attend, tickets can be arranged separately. The major temple sightseeing is saved for tomorrow so the carvings and architecture can be appreciated without rushing.

Overnight in Khajuraho.

Orchha to Khajuraho - Madhya Pradesh tour

Spend the day visiting the UNESCO-listed Khajuraho temple groups. Begin with the Western Group, including Kandariya Mahadeva and Lakshmana temples, then see selected temples in the Eastern Group. A guide can explain the Chandella dynasty, architectural details and the religious imagery beyond the sculptures for which Khajuraho is widely known. Keep the evening free after a full day outdoors.

Overnight in Khajuraho.

Khajuraho Western and Eastern Temple Groups - Madhya Pradesh tour

Drive to Bandhavgarh, crossing rural Madhya Pradesh on the way to the forest region. After checking in at your wildlife lodge, spend the afternoon resting and preparing for an early safari start. Your guide or lodge team will explain the assigned gate, reporting time and identification requirements once permits are confirmed. Dinner is planned at the lodge according to the final package.

Overnight in Bandhavgarh.

Khajuraho to Bandhavgarh - Madhya Pradesh tour

Take an early-morning jeep safari in Bandhavgarh’s forest landscape, travelling with an authorised driver and nature guide. Return to the lodge for breakfast and a break before a second afternoon safari, if both permits have been secured. Bandhavgarh is known for tigers, but sightings are never guaranteed; the forest also supports deer, langurs and numerous birds. Safari routes, timings and vehicle allocation are controlled by the forest department.

Overnight in Bandhavgarh.

Bandhavgarh - Morning and Afternoon Safaris - Madhya Pradesh tour

After breakfast, drive to Jabalpur. In the afternoon, concentrate on the Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat and nearby Dhuandhar Falls. A boat trip through the marble gorge is worthwhile when seasonal water levels and local operators permit it. This is a transfer day, so additional city attractions are deliberately not fixed; allow time for the road journey and riverside visit.

Overnight in Jabalpur.

Bandhavgarh to Jabalpur - Bhedaghat - Madhya Pradesh tour

Start early for the long drive towards Bhopal. If road conditions and arrival time are suitable, continue to the UNESCO-listed Bhimbetka Rock Shelters for a guided introduction to prehistoric paintings and the surrounding sandstone landscape. This stop extends an already substantial transfer, so it may be shifted to the following day if needed. Arrive in Bhopal and rest in the evening.

Overnight in Bhopal.

Jabalpur to Bhopal - Bhimbetka Rock Shelters - Madhya Pradesh tour

Visit the UNESCO-listed Sanchi Stupa, an important Buddhist heritage complex outside Bhopal, with time for the Great Stupa, gateways and associated monuments. Return to the city for one selected activity, such as the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum or the lakefront, depending on opening hours and energy levels. If Bhimbetka could not be visited yesterday, this day should instead focus on Bhimbetka and Bhopal; Sanchi should not be squeezed in alongside both.

Overnight in Bhopal.

Sanchi Stupa and Bhopal Heritage - Madhya Pradesh tour

Enjoy breakfast before a private transfer to Bhopal Airport or railway station for your onward journey. Departure time will be based on your confirmed ticket. The tour ends after Gwalior and Orchha’s forts, Khajuraho’s temples, Bandhavgarh wildlife, Jabalpur’s marble gorge and the archaeological heritage around Bhopal.

Tour concludes in Bhopal.

Madhya Pradesh Tour FAQs

Yes. The route includes two nights in Gwalior, one in Orchha, two in Khajuraho, two in Bandhavgarh, one in Jabalpur and two in Bhopal. It starts in Gwalior and ends in Bhopal, avoiding an unnecessary return drive.

The proposed programme schedules one morning and one afternoon jeep safari on Day 7. Whether both permits, vehicle, guide and park charges are included must be stated in your final quotation. Forest entry is subject to availability, closures and the zone allocated by Madhya Pradesh Forest Department. Khajuraho and Bandhavgarh wildlife travel also requires advance safari planning.

Bandhavgarh is a well-known tiger reserve, but no wildlife sighting can be guaranteed. Sightings vary with animal movement, weather and the assigned safari zone. A guided drive is rewarding for the forest scenery and other wildlife even without a tiger encounter.

Core-zone safaris generally operate from October to June, with seasonal and holiday closures. Wednesday afternoons are not normally available in the core zones. Your precise dates and both safari slots must be checked on the official Madhya Pradesh forest booking portal before confirmation.

The longer driving days are Khajuraho to Bandhavgarh and especially Jabalpur to Bhopal. The Bhimbetka visit adds time to the latter transfer. Private air-conditioned transport and comfort stops help, but travellers who want a slower holiday should add a night in Bhopal or Jabalpur.

Both are worthwhile UNESCO sites but lie in different directions from Bhopal. The standard plan places Bhimbetka on the arrival approach and Sanchi on the following day. If the transfer runs late, the sightseeing should be rearranged rather than forcing both into one day.

No. Boat trips depend on river flow, the season, safety restrictions and local operator schedules. Dhuandhar Falls and the marble gorge viewpoints remain the main visits if boating is unavailable.

The guest programme specifies guided sightseeing in Gwalior, Orchha, Khajuraho, Jabalpur and Bhopal. The final proposal should identify guide languages and which sites have a dedicated local guide. Bandhavgarh safaris use authorised forest guides.

October through March generally brings more comfortable weather for forts, temples and road travel. The core wildlife safari season typically extends into June, but summer can become very hot. Booking early is especially important for Bandhavgarh permits and popular travel periods.

It can be adapted. Gwalior Fort, Khajuraho and Sanchi involve walking, while the jeep safaris can be bumpy and mornings chilly in winter. We can reduce climbs, plan rest stops and choose convenient hotels. Gwalior, Orchha and Khajuraho can also form a shorter heritage-focused journey.
