Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 8 Days Kerala Spice & Culinary Tour explores the food traditions of Kerala through Kochi, Thekkady and Alleppey. The itinerary combines heritage sightseeing with spice markets, plantation experiences, home-style cooking, coastal flavours and backwater cuisine.
The journey is designed for inbound travellers who want to understand how Kerala’s cuisine is shaped by spices, coconut, rice, seafood, vegetables, tropical produce and centuries of maritime trade. Culinary experiences are integrated naturally with Fort Kochi, plantation country and the backwaters.
Kochi introduces the relationship between trade and food through historic neighbourhoods, markets and coastal cuisine. Thekkady adds direct contact with spices such as cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and cloves, while Alleppey shows how food traditions adapt to backwater life.
Meals and tastings can be adjusted for vegetarian, vegan and milder-spice preferences. Seafood can be included for travellers who want it, but the itinerary does not depend on seafood and can remain fully vegetarian.
Plantation visits and cooking activities should follow current local arrangements and seasonality. The focus is on understanding ingredients and techniques rather than promising the availability of one specific crop or dish every day.
Arrive in Kochi and transfer privately to your hotel. The first day is kept relaxed after the journey.
Kochi is a natural starting point for a Kerala culinary tour because its food culture reflects centuries of maritime trade, coastal ingredients and interaction with different communities.
In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner introducing Kerala staples such as rice, coconut-based preparations, vegetables, lentils, regional breads and selected seafood where requested.
Your host or guide can explain the use of curry leaves, mustard seeds, coconut, tamarind and regional spice blends without reducing Kerala cuisine to one generic “curry.”
Reconfirm dietary requirements and preferred spice levels before the coming market and cooking experiences.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
After breakfast, explore Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, combining heritage sightseeing with Kerala’s historic spice-trade story.
Walk through suitable market areas and spice shops to see pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and other ingredients connected with Kerala’s long trading history.
Your guide can explain how whole spices differ in aroma and use, and how they are incorporated into savoury dishes, sweets, tea and traditional household preparations.
Continue with selected cultural attractions in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry according to current opening conditions.
Finish with a carefully selected lunch or dinner featuring coastal or vegetarian Kerala dishes.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
Begin with a visit to a suitable local produce or neighbourhood market in Kochi.
Look at vegetables, banana varieties, coconut, rice products, fish or seafood where relevant, herbs, curry leaves and spices used in everyday Kerala kitchens.
Later, join a home-style Kerala cooking experience with a local host or culinary instructor.
Focus on a manageable meal using techniques such as tempering mustard seeds, working with coconut, balancing sour and spicy flavours, and preparing a vegetable, lentil or seafood dish according to preference.
Share the prepared meal and discuss how household cooking differs between communities and regions of Kerala.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
After breakfast, travel from Kochi towards Thekkady, entering Kerala’s hill and spice-growing country.
The road journey provides a useful transition from coastal food traditions to plantation ingredients.
On arrival, check in and take a short orientation walk through a suitable local market or plantation neighbourhood if time permits.
Your guide can introduce the role of cardamom, pepper and other spices in both local agriculture and Kerala cooking.
Dinner can feature a simple regional meal using local spices without making every dish excessively hot.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
Spend the morning visiting a suitable spice plantation in the Thekkady region.
Depending on season and plantation conditions, see crops such as cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg or other tropical plants.
Learn how spices are grown, harvested, dried and prepared before reaching kitchens and markets. The visit should focus on practical understanding rather than promising every crop at the same stage.
Later, join a plantation-based cooking demonstration or hosted meal where available. Explore how freshly available spices are used in everyday regional cooking.
Keep the evening relaxed after the plantation experience.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
After breakfast, travel from Thekkady to Alleppey, where Kerala’s food culture changes again with the backwater environment.
On arrival, board a suitable backwater cruise or transfer to your backwater accommodation according to the confirmed arrangement.
Lunch can introduce simple backwater-style dishes prepared with rice, coconut, vegetables and fish or seafood where requested.
During the cruise or village stay, observe how waterways, fishing, rice cultivation and local produce influence everyday meals in the region.
Enjoy a relaxed dinner and evening by the backwaters.
Overnight stay in Alleppey or on the backwaters.
Begin with a relaxed morning around the backwaters and, where arranged, visit a suitable village or local household for a closer look at everyday food preparation.
The experience may include coconut preparation, rice-based foods, seasonal vegetables, local snacks or simple home-style dishes depending on the host and season.
Avoid turning the visit into a staged demonstration. The value comes from seeing how ordinary meals are prepared and how ingredients are adapted to local availability.
Later, return to Kochi and check in at the hotel.
Enjoy a farewell Kerala dinner in the evening, choosing either coastal, vegetarian or mixed regional dishes.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
Depending on your departure schedule, enjoy a relaxed final morning in Kochi.
If time permits, include one final tea, spice shop or local bakery stop close to the hotel.
Use the final meal to reflect on the culinary contrasts of the journey: Kochi’s trade-influenced coastal food, Thekkady’s plantation spices and Alleppey’s backwater cuisine.
Check out and transfer privately to Kochi airport or your agreed onward point.
Your 8 Days Kerala Spice & Culinary Tour concludes after combining heritage, markets, plantation experiences, home cooking and backwater food traditions across three distinctive regions.
