7 Days Munnar Thekkady Kumarakom Nature Tour Kerala

7 Days Kumarakom, Munnar and Thekkady Nature Tour

6 Nights / 7 Days Kochi · Munnar · Thekkady · Kumarakom · Pathiramanal · Kochi

Tour Overview

This 7 Days Kumarakom, Munnar and Thekkady Nature Tour is designed for travellers searching for a classic Kerala nature itinerary that combines tea-covered hills, spice country, protected forest and backwater wetlands. The journey begins in Kochi and travels first to Munnar, then continues to Thekkady for the Periyar landscape, before finishing in Kumarakom beside Vembanad Lake.

The itinerary works particularly well for couples, families and first-time Kerala visitors who want the Munnar-Thekkady-Kumarakom circuit without adding too many destinations into one week. Two nights in Munnar give enough time for tea-estate scenery and the main viewpoints, while two nights around Thekkady allow a dedicated Periyar nature day. Kumarakom then slows the pace with birding, backwater scenery and a Pathiramanal excursion before the final drive to Kochi.

This route is more balanced than trying to include Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey, Kumarakom, Kovalam and Kochi in seven days. The focus is nature rather than constant hotel changes. Munnar introduces the Western Ghats through tea plantations, reservoirs and viewpoints. Thekkady adds spice-growing landscapes and protected forest, while Kumarakom provides the wetland and lake environment that makes Kerala's backwaters distinctive.

The Periyar experience must remain realistic. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and activities operate according to local schedules, permits and park regulations. Likewise, bird activity around Kumarakom and Pathiramanal varies by season, weather and migration patterns. These places should be promoted for their natural habitats and landscapes, not as guaranteed animal-sighting attractions.

Travellers who want a traditional overnight houseboat can add Alleppey after Kumarakom. Those interested in beaches can continue towards Varkala or Kovalam. Browse our Kerala tour packages for longer routes.

Detailed Itinerary

Arrive at Kochi International Airport or railway station and meet your driver for the journey to Munnar. This transfer takes you from Kerala's coastal plain towards the higher elevations of the Western Ghats.

The road becomes increasingly scenic as you move inland, with plantations, forested slopes and small towns along the route. Depending on traffic, weather and your arrival time, short photo or refreshment stops can be made without turning the transfer into an overloaded sightseeing day.

On arrival in Munnar, check in at your hotel and keep the evening free. If daylight remains, take a short walk near the hotel or enjoy views of the tea slopes before dinner.

Travel planning tip: if your Kochi arrival is late in the day, an overnight in Kochi may be more comfortable than starting a hill transfer immediately. The itinerary can be customised accordingly.

Overnight stay in Munnar.

Kochi to Munnar Kerala hill journey

After breakfast, spend the day exploring Munnar. The attraction of Munnar is the combination of tea-covered hills, reservoirs, viewpoints and cool highland scenery rather than one single monument.

A practical sightseeing circuit can include Mattupetty Dam, the surrounding reservoir landscape and nearby viewpoints. Continue towards Echo Point and other scenic stops operating comfortably with the day's weather and traffic conditions.

Later, spend time learning about Munnar's tea heritage. Depending on opening hours and your interests, this may include a tea museum or an authorised plantation-related visit. The most useful experience explains cultivation, plucking and processing rather than simply stopping for photographs.

If a visit to Eravikulam National Park is planned, it should be treated separately and only when the park is open and entry is available. Access can be affected by seasonal closure, conservation rules and visitor limits.

Return to the hotel in the evening. Avoid trying to cover every viewpoint in one day, as Munnar road travel can be slower than map distances suggest.

Munnar tea gardens and sightseeing tour

After breakfast, check out and travel from Munnar to Thekkady. The route crosses another section of Kerala's highlands, passing plantation country and forested slopes.

On arrival, check in at your hotel and take some time to rest. Later, visit a local spice plantation or spice garden where you can learn about crops such as cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and other plants associated with Kerala's spice-growing regions.

A guided plantation walk is most useful when it focuses on cultivation and harvesting rather than turning into a compulsory retail stop. Ask your guide to explain the plants and local farming practices.

In the evening, you may explore the local market area or consider an optional cultural programme, depending on interest and available schedules.

Overnight stay in Thekkady.

Munnar to Thekkady spice plantation tour

Today is reserved for the natural environment around Periyar Tiger Reserve. The exact programme should be selected according to the activities available during your travel dates, current park regulations and your preferred level of physical activity.

A common introduction is time around Periyar Lake, where authorised boat services may operate according to fixed schedules and availability. The surrounding forest can offer views of birds and other wildlife, but animal sightings are never guaranteed.

Travellers seeking a more immersive nature experience can consider authorised eco-tourism programmes where available. These may involve guided walking or other forest-based activities and often need advance reservations.

Periyar should not be promoted as a place where a tiger sighting is expected. The reserve is a large natural habitat and the value of the visit lies in the forest, lake, birdlife, signs of wildlife and the interpretation provided by trained local guides.

Return to your hotel after the scheduled activity. The rest of the day can be kept free for the market, a relaxed meal or additional plantation time.

Overnight stay in Thekkady.

Periyar nature and wildlife experience in Thekkady

After breakfast, check out from Thekkady and travel towards Kumarakom. Today's drive takes you from the spice-growing hills down towards the low-lying wetlands and waterways around Vembanad Lake.

On arrival, check in at your backwater or lakeside resort. Keep the afternoon deliberately light so you can enjoy the slower atmosphere of Kumarakom rather than immediately start another sightseeing circuit.

Take a walk around the resort surroundings, relax beside the water or choose an optional short boat experience if weather and local operations permit. The wider lake environment here feels very different from the narrow canals often associated with Alleppey.

Sunset over the lake or waterways is often one of the most relaxing parts of a Kumarakom stay, so leave enough free time in the late afternoon.

Overnight stay in Kumarakom.

Thekkady to Kumarakom Vembanad Lake tour

Begin the day early with a visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The wetland habitat is best enjoyed as a nature walk, with time to observe water channels, vegetation and birdlife.

Bird activity changes throughout the year and can vary even from morning to morning. Migration season, rainfall and water conditions all influence what may be seen, so specific bird sightings should not be guaranteed.

Later, continue with an excursion towards Pathiramanal, a small island in the Vembanad Lake environment. Access is generally boat-based and depends on weather, water conditions and locally available services.

The value of the excursion is the journey across the backwaters as much as the island itself. Enjoy views across the lake, wetland vegetation and local waterways while your guide explains the ecology of the region.

Return to Kumarakom after the excursion and keep the rest of the afternoon free. Travellers wanting more time on the water can choose an additional private cruise, while others may simply relax at the resort.

Overnight stay in Kumarakom.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Pathiramanal excursion

After breakfast, check out from your Kumarakom resort and begin the drive to Kochi.

The transfer will be scheduled around your onward flight or train. If you have a late departure, selected Kochi sightseeing can be added, but the programme should remain close enough to the airport or railway station to avoid unnecessary stress on the final day.

At the appropriate time, transfer to Kochi International Airport or the railway station for your onward journey.

Your 7 Days Kumarakom, Munnar and Thekkady Nature Tour concludes after combining Munnar's tea-covered mountains, Thekkady's spice and forest landscape, the Periyar nature experience and Kumarakom's backwater wetlands.

Tour concludes in Kochi.
