Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 7 Days Kovalam, Alleppey, Thekkady and Thiruvananthapuram Tour combines four of the most searched experiences in a first Kerala holiday: the beaches of Kovalam, the quieter waterways around Poovar, the famous backwater landscape of Alleppey, and the forested spice country around Thekkady. The journey starts and finishes in Thiruvananthapuram, making it a practical one-week South Kerala circuit.
The itinerary is particularly useful for couples, families and first-time visitors who want a 7-day Kerala itinerary with beach, backwaters and wildlife without adding too many hotel changes. The first two nights are in Kovalam, with time for the beach and a Poovar excursion. From there, the route moves to Alleppey for Kerala's classic canal and backwater scenery before continuing inland to Thekkady for Periyar, spice plantations and nature-focused experiences.
Unlike a Kerala itinerary that tries to add Munnar, Kochi and Kumarakom into the same week, this programme keeps the southern route more realistic. It gives meaningful time to each destination and reduces the number of long transfer days. Alleppey can be experienced through a houseboat, private day cruise or backwater resort depending on your preferred comfort level and budget.
In Thekkady, the programme should not be sold as a guaranteed wildlife-sighting tour. Activities around Periyar Tiger Reserve are controlled locally and depend on availability, operating schedules and park regulations. A well-planned visit may combine a lake-based nature experience, guided eco-activity, spice plantation visit or local cultural programme. Wildlife moves freely, so animal sightings can never be promised.
Travellers wanting a longer Kerala holiday can add Munnar for tea plantations, Kumarakom for a slower backwater stay, or Kochi for Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. See more combinations in our Kerala tour packages.
Arrive at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or railway station and meet your driver for the private transfer to Kovalam. Because Kovalam is close to the capital, you can begin the holiday with a short transfer rather than a long driving day.
After hotel check-in, keep the afternoon easy. Walk towards Lighthouse Beach or the nearest section of the waterfront and enjoy your first views of the Arabian Sea. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore the promenade, sit at a beachfront café or relax at the hotel.
The evening is best kept free for sunset and recovery from your journey. The main Kovalam and Poovar sightseeing is scheduled for Day 2, so there is no need to rush into a full programme today.
Practical note: sea conditions can vary, particularly during the monsoon. Follow lifeguard and local safety advice before swimming.
Overnight stay in Kovalam.
After breakfast, begin with a relaxed Kovalam beach tour. Spend time around Lighthouse Beach, then continue through the Hawa Beach area and towards the quieter surroundings of Samudra Beach.
Later, drive south to Poovar for a backwater excursion. A locally operated boat ride takes you through palm and mangrove-lined waterways, village edges and wider sections of the estuary landscape.
Depending on tides, weather and local navigation conditions, you may see the sandbar and the meeting area of the river, backwaters and Arabian Sea. Exact routes and landing points vary, so the excursion should remain flexible.
Return to Kovalam after the boat trip. Keep the late afternoon free for the beach, an optional Ayurveda treatment or another sunset walk along the coast.
This day gives you two different South Kerala environments without changing hotels: the open Arabian Sea coast at Kovalam and the sheltered inland waterways of Poovar.
Overnight stay in Kovalam.
After breakfast, check out from Kovalam and drive north towards Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha. This is the main transfer day of the first half of the tour, taking you from Kerala's open coast into its famous backwater region.
On arrival, your Alleppey experience can be planned in different ways depending on the package you select. A traditional option is an overnight houseboat, while travellers who prefer a hotel can choose a private daytime backwater cruise and stay at a resort.
During the cruise, watch the landscape change between canals, village homes, coconut groves and low-lying paddy fields. The backwaters are not simply a sightseeing attraction; they remain part of everyday transport and local life in this part of Kerala.
Houseboat routes and cruising hours are determined by local operating practices, water conditions and docking schedules. Boats normally remain moored overnight rather than cruising continuously after dark.
Choosing your stay: an overnight houseboat is best for travellers who want the classic Kerala experience. A backwater resort with a shorter private cruise may suit families, senior travellers or guests who prefer more hotel facilities.
Overnight stay in Alleppey or on a houseboat, according to the selected plan.
After breakfast and completion of your backwater stay, leave Alleppey and travel inland to Thekkady. The journey moves gradually away from the flat backwater region into hillier countryside known for forests and spice cultivation.
On arrival, check in at your hotel and take time to rest. Later, visit a local spice plantation or spice garden where a guide can introduce crops commonly associated with Kerala, such as cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and other tropical plants.
A plantation visit is more useful when treated as an introduction to how spices are grown rather than simply as a shopping stop. Ask questions about cultivation, harvesting and processing, and purchase products only if you genuinely want them.
Depending on arrival time and interest, the evening can include a walk around the local market area or an optional cultural performance. Keep the programme light because the main Periyar experience is planned for the following day.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
Today is dedicated to the natural surroundings of Thekkady and Periyar Tiger Reserve. The exact programme should be selected according to the activities operating during your travel dates and the level of walking or nature exploration you prefer.
A common first experience is time around Periyar Lake, where authorised boat services may operate subject to schedules and availability. The lake and surrounding forest provide opportunities to observe birds and sometimes larger wildlife along the water's edge, but sightings are never guaranteed.
Travellers who want a more active nature experience can consider authorised eco-tourism activities offered locally, where available. These may involve guided walks or other forest-based programmes and can require advance booking, appropriate footwear and compliance with park instructions.
Do not plan this day around the expectation of seeing a tiger. Periyar is a protected natural landscape, and wildlife moves freely. Elephants, deer, birds, monkeys and other species may be encountered, but every visit is different.
After your nature activity, return to the hotel. The remainder of the day can include local shopping, a second spice-related experience or time at leisure.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
After breakfast, check out from your Thekkady hotel and begin the drive south to Thiruvananthapuram. This is the longest road transfer in the itinerary, so an early departure is sensible and suitable comfort stops should be included along the way.
The landscape changes gradually from Thekkady's wooded hills back towards the lower-lying southern districts and the capital. On arrival in Thiruvananthapuram, check in at the hotel and rest before any evening programme.
If arrival is early enough, visit selected city sights. A practical option is the cultural precinct around Napier Museum and Sri Chitra Art Gallery, depending on opening hours, or explore a local market area.
You may also visit the area around Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. As an active place of worship, the temple has specific access and dress rules, and interior entry should only be planned when permitted under the regulations in force at the time of your visit.
Overnight stay in Thiruvananthapuram.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel. The departure plan will be arranged according to your flight or train timing.
If you have a later departure, use the morning for any city sightseeing that could not be completed on Day 6, a short shopping stop or simply a relaxed start before travelling home. Avoid adding a distant excursion on departure day.
At the appropriate time, transfer to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or railway station for your onward journey.
Your 7 Days Kovalam, Alleppey, Thekkady and Thiruvananthapuram Tour concludes after combining Kovalam's beaches, Poovar's backwaters, the waterways of Alleppey, Thekkady's spice-growing landscape and the natural setting of Periyar.
Tour concludes in Thiruvananthapuram.
