This 7 Days Ajanta, Ellora & Sanchi Buddhist Heritage Tour explores a different side of India's Buddhist history by combining the rock-cut monasteries and paintings of Ajanta with the Buddhist caves of Ellora and the great stupa complex of Sanchi. The journey travels through Mumbai, Aurangabad, Bhopal and Delhi using a combination of private road transport and the most suitable confirmed air or rail sectors.
Unlike the pilgrimage routes focused mainly on sites associated directly with the Buddha's life, this itinerary concentrates on the development of Buddhist art, monastic architecture and patronage over many centuries. Ajanta is the principal Buddhist cave experience, while Ellora presents Buddhist monuments alongside important Hindu and Jain caves. Sanchi adds one of India's most significant stupa and monastic landscapes.
Two nights in Aurangabad allow Ajanta and Ellora to be visited on separate days, which is important because both complexes require significant walking and detailed interpretation. Ajanta is given a full day for its chaitya halls, viharas, sculpture and celebrated Buddhist paintings.
At Ellora, the programme focuses first on the Buddhist caves before placing them within the larger multi-faith complex. This gives travellers a more accurate understanding of Ellora rather than treating the entire site as a Buddhist monument.
