Tour Overview

This 6 Days Varkala, Alleppey and Kochi Tour is designed for travellers who want a compact Kerala itinerary combining a cliffside beach stay, the state's famous backwaters and the cultural heritage of Kochi. The journey starts from Thiruvananthapuram and moves directly to Varkala, where you spend two nights exploring the cliff, beach and spiritual side of the town. From there, the route continues to Alleppey for a classic backwater experience before finishing in Kochi.

The search intent behind this trip is a practical Varkala Alleppey Kochi itinerary for travellers who want beach, backwaters and heritage in less than a week. Varkala adds a relaxed coastal atmosphere without repeating the resort feel of Kovalam, Alleppey delivers the iconic canals and houseboat experience, and Kochi adds Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and the old trading neighbourhoods that give Kerala's west coast a strong historical identity.

The route is especially suitable for couples, families and first-time visitors who do not want long hill drives. It avoids Munnar and Thekkady, keeping the focus on Kerala's coast and waterways. This makes the itinerary easier to pace and gives more actual sightseeing time rather than spending most of the holiday in a car.

The Alleppey section can be customised with either an overnight houseboat, a private daytime cruise or a backwater resort stay. Houseboat quality varies considerably, so cabin category, air-conditioning hours, meals, private/shared operation and boarding point should be confirmed before booking rather than relying only on exterior photographs.

Travellers wanting to extend the route can add Kumarakom for a quieter lake stay, Thekkady for spice country and Periyar, or Munnar for tea-covered hills. See more ideas in our Kerala tour packages.

Tour Highlights:

  • Stay two nights in Varkala and explore the famous cliff coastline.
  • Visit Papanasam Beach and selected Varkala heritage sites.
  • Enjoy Kerala's classic Alleppey backwater landscape.
  • Choose an overnight houseboat or private backwater cruise.
  • Explore Fort Kochi's waterfront and colonial-era streets.
  • Discover Mattancherry, Jew Town and Kochi's trading heritage.
  • Travel on a compact Kerala beach, backwater and heritage route.

Detailed Itinerary

Arrive at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or railway station and meet your driver for the transfer to Varkala. The route follows Kerala's southern coastal region and provides a comfortable first transfer without sending you immediately into a long hill journey.

On arrival, check in at your hotel and take time to rest. Later, walk towards Varkala Cliff, the most distinctive feature of the destination. The cliff-top promenade offers wide views over the Arabian Sea and is lined with cafés, small shops and access paths leading down towards the beach.

Spend the late afternoon around the cliff and Papanasam Beach. If weather is clear, sunset from the cliff is a good introduction to Varkala. Keep the day relaxed if you have arrived after a long journey.

Practical note: paths between the cliff and beach include steps and uneven sections. Comfortable footwear is more useful than beach-only sandals if you plan to walk extensively.

Overnight stay in Varkala.

After breakfast, spend a full day exploring Varkala. Start with another walk along the cliff area before the day becomes warmer, taking time for viewpoints and the different beach access points.

Continue towards Papanasam Beach, which has both recreational and religious importance for local visitors. The beach area can become busier at particular times of day, especially around ritual activity, so sightseeing should remain respectful and unobtrusive.

If you are interested in temple heritage, visit or view the area around Janardhana Swamy Temple, subject to current access rules, visitor eligibility and dress requirements. Active Hindu temples may restrict interior entry, so the itinerary should never guarantee access without checking the rules in force at the time.

Depending on your interests, the day can also include local beach areas, wellness time or a slower café-and-cliff afternoon. Varkala is best enjoyed without overplanning every hour, so keep enough time for walking and views.

During rough sea conditions or monsoon periods, follow local safety advice before swimming. The sea can be stronger than it appears from the cliff.

After breakfast, check out from Varkala and travel north towards Alleppey (Alappuzha). Today's journey takes you from Kerala's open coastline into the low-lying canal and backwater region around Vembanad Lake.

On arrival, begin your backwater experience according to the package selected. The classic option is an overnight private houseboat, while travellers who prefer a hotel can choose a private daytime cruise and stay at a backwater resort.

During the cruise, observe coconut-lined waterways, village homes, small jetties, paddy fields and local boats. The backwaters are still part of daily life, so the most interesting experience is often simply watching the landscape and communities along the canals.

Houseboats generally cruise during permitted daylight hours and remain moored later in the evening. Exact route, cruising duration and docking point depend on local navigation and operating conditions.

Before boarding: confirm whether the houseboat is private or shared, cabin category, air-conditioning policy, meal plan and dietary needs. These details have a major impact on the quality of the stay.

Overnight stay in Alleppey or on a houseboat, according to your selected plan.

After breakfast, complete the morning backwater experience and disembark according to the houseboat or cruise schedule. Meet your driver and continue to Kochi.

On arrival, check in at the hotel and take some time to rest. Later, begin with a gentle orientation around Fort Kochi. Walk along the waterfront and see the area around the Chinese fishing nets, one of the city's most recognisable coastal sights.

Continue through the surrounding historic streets, where old churches, colonial-era buildings, cafés and residential lanes reflect Kochi's long role as a trading port.

Keep the evening flexible. Travellers interested in Kerala's performing arts may consider an optional Kathakali-related cultural programme, subject to the local performance schedule.

Overnight stay in Kochi.

Alleppey to Kochi and Fort Kochi waterfront sightseeing

After breakfast, spend a full day exploring the historic parts of Kochi. Begin in Fort Kochi with selected colonial-era landmarks and the old waterfront.

Visit St. Francis Church and continue through the historic streets towards the Mattancherry side of the old city. The aim is to understand Kochi's layered history rather than simply move between isolated photo stops.

In Mattancherry, visit the area around Mattancherry Palace, subject to opening hours. Continue into Jew Town, known for antique shops, old trading streets and the spice-market atmosphere.

If access and timing permit, include the historic synagogue area. Religious sites may have security rules, visitor restrictions and specific closing days, so the exact order of sightseeing should stay flexible.

Later, return towards Fort Kochi and enjoy free time for cafés, galleries, shopping or the waterfront. This slower finish gives you time to appreciate the neighbourhood rather than treating Kochi as a rushed half-day stop.

After breakfast, check out from the hotel. Your final transfer will be arranged according to the timing of your flight or train.

If your departure is later in the day, use the morning for a short nearby visit, shopping or additional Fort Kochi time. Avoid adding a distant excursion that could create unnecessary pressure before the airport transfer.

At the appropriate time, transfer to Kochi International Airport or the railway station for your onward journey.

Your 6 Days Varkala, Alleppey and Kochi Tour concludes after combining Varkala's cliffside coast, Kerala's famous backwaters and the historic neighbourhoods of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.
