Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel design er (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 6 Days Marari, Kumarakom and Thekkady Tour is designed for travellers who want a slower Kerala journey combining beach time, backwaters and forested spice country. The route starts in Kochi and moves first to Marari for a relaxed coastal stay. From there, the journey continues to Kumarakom beside Vembanad Lake before finishing in Thekkady for spice plantations and the Periyar landscape.
The search intent behind this itinerary is a practical Marari Kumarakom Thekkady tour that avoids the pressure of trying to cover too many destinations in less than a week. Marari gives you a quiet beach and village setting, Kumarakom brings birdlife and the wider backwater ecosystem, while Thekkady adds hill scenery, spice-growing landscapes and nature-based experiences around Periyar.
The route works especially well for couples, families and travellers who prefer nature and local experiences over a fast-paced sightseeing checklist. Two nights in Marari allow genuine beach and village time, while Kumarakom introduces the backwaters without requiring an overnight houseboat. Thekkady then shifts the scenery from low-lying wetlands to forested highlands.
Periyar should be presented realistically. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and authorised activities depend on permits, local schedules, weather and current reserve regulations. The quality of the experience also comes from the forest, lake, birdlife and plantation landscape, not only from animal sightings.
Travellers wanting a classic houseboat experience can add Alleppey after Marari or Kumarakom. Those wanting tea-country scenery can extend to Munnar. Browse more Kerala tour packages for longer routes.
Arrive at Kochi International Airport or railway station and meet your driver for the journey to Marari. The transfer takes you south from the Kochi region towards a quieter stretch of Kerala's coast.
On arrival, check in at your beach resort or hotel and keep the afternoon light. Marari is best experienced slowly, so there is no need to begin with a long sightseeing programme.
Later, walk towards Marari Beach and enjoy the coast at a relaxed pace. Depending on your arrival time, the evening can be used for sunset, a beach walk or simply enjoying the resort surroundings.
Practical note: sea conditions vary seasonally. During rough weather or monsoon periods, always follow local safety advice before swimming.
Overnight stay in Marari.
After breakfast, spend a full day in Marari. Begin with a relaxed morning near the beach before exploring the surrounding village environment.
With a local guide where available, walk through quiet lanes, coconut groves and residential areas to understand everyday life near the coast. Depending on the arrangement, you may also see small farms, fishing-related activity or traditional household industries.
A village experience should remain respectful and natural. Marari is a living community, so interactions should not be staged and photography should always be considerate.
Return to the resort for the afternoon and keep the rest of the day free for beach time, an optional Ayurveda session or simple relaxation.
The value of this day is the slow pace. It gives the itinerary a real beach stay rather than making Marari just another overnight stop.
Overnight stay in Marari.
After breakfast, check out from Marari and continue to Kumarakom, located on the eastern side of Vembanad Lake.
The landscape gradually shifts from the open coast to canals, wetlands and lakeside villages. On arrival, check in at your backwater or lakeside resort and take some time to relax.
Later, enjoy a short local walk or an optional boat experience, subject to weather and operator availability. Kumarakom is best appreciated for the wider lake setting and slower wetland atmosphere rather than a rushed sightseeing circuit.
Leave the late afternoon open for sunset beside the water or time at the resort. The main bird sanctuary visit is planned for the following morning.
Overnight stay in Kumarakom.
Begin the day early with a visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Morning is generally the best time to explore the wetland environment before the day becomes warmer.
Walk through the sanctuary and surrounding habitat with time to observe water channels, vegetation and birdlife. Bird activity changes by season, rainfall and migration patterns, so specific species should never be guaranteed.
After the visit, return to the hotel for breakfast if not already taken, then check out and begin the drive to Thekkady.
The journey takes you away from Kerala's low-lying backwaters and into hillier spice-growing country. On arrival in Thekkady, check in at the hotel.
If time permits, visit a local spice plantation or spice garden where a guide can explain crops such as cardamom, pepper and cinnamon. The visit is most useful when focused on cultivation and processing rather than only shopping.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
Today is reserved for the natural environment around Periyar Tiger Reserve. The exact programme should be selected according to current activity schedules, park regulations and your preferred level of physical activity.
A common first experience is time around Periyar Lake, where authorised boat services may operate according to fixed schedules and availability. The surrounding forest can provide opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife, but sightings are never guaranteed.
Travellers looking for a more active experience can consider authorised eco-tourism activities where available. These may involve guided walking or other forest-based programmes and often require advance booking.
Periyar should not be sold as a guaranteed tiger-sighting destination. The reserve is a large protected habitat, and the value of the visit lies in the forest, lake, birdlife and signs of wildlife as much as in direct sightings.
After the nature activity, return to the hotel. The rest of the day can remain free for a local market visit, spice shopping or relaxation.
Overnight stay in Thekkady.
After breakfast, check out from Thekkady and begin the drive back to Kochi.
This is the final transfer day, so departure timing should be planned with a comfortable buffer for hill roads, traffic and airport or railway formalities.
If your flight or train is later in the day, a short nearby stop can be added in Kochi, but avoid a distant excursion that could create unnecessary pressure.
At the appropriate time, transfer to Kochi International Airport or railway station for your onward journey.
Your 6 Days Marari, Kumarakom and Thekkady Tour concludes after combining Marari's quiet beach, Kumarakom's backwater wetlands and the spice-and-forest landscape around Thekkady and Periyar.
Tour concludes in Kochi.
