Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel design er (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 6 Days Kumarakom, Alleppey and Kochi Backwater Tour is built for travellers who want to experience Kerala's backwaters in more depth rather than rushing through them in a single overnight stop. The journey begins in Kochi, then moves to Kumarakom for Vembanad Lake, birdlife and village scenery, before continuing to Alleppey for the classic houseboat experience. The trip finishes with a full day in Kochi covering Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.
The search intent behind this itinerary is clear: travellers looking for a Kumarakom and Alleppey backwater tour usually want more than just a boat ride. This route gives you both sides of the Kerala backwaters. Kumarakom offers a quieter lakeside stay with birding and local village experiences, while Alleppey adds the iconic network of canals, traditional houseboats and paddy-field landscapes. Kochi provides the cultural contrast with colonial-era streets, historic churches, waterfront views and old trading neighbourhoods.
Two nights in Kumarakom make this itinerary more useful for travellers who prefer a slower backwater experience. Instead of arriving, boarding a boat and leaving the next morning, you have time to explore the wetland environment, visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and spend time in a village setting. Bird activity varies with season and time of day, so it is better to treat the sanctuary as a nature walk through wetland habitat rather than promise specific species.
On Day 4, the trip moves to Alleppey for the houseboat section. Houseboat category, cabin type, air-conditioning policy, meal plan and cruising hours should be confirmed before booking. Boats generally cruise during daylight and remain moored later in the evening. Travellers who prefer a hotel bed can replace the overnight houseboat with a private day cruise and a resort stay.
The final Kochi stay adds a different layer to the holiday. Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, the historic spice-trading areas and waterfront landmarks make this more than a backwater-only itinerary. Travellers wanting to extend the route can add Munnar for tea country or Thekkady for spice plantations and Periyar. Explore more combinations in our Kerala tour packages.
Arrive at Kochi International Airport or the railway station and meet your driver for the private transfer to the hotel. Today is intentionally kept lighter because the main Kochi sightseeing is planned for Day 5.
After check-in and some rest, you can begin with a relaxed introduction to Kochi. If your hotel is in or near Fort Kochi, take an evening walk along the waterfront and explore the historic streets around the old town.
Depending on arrival time, visit the area around the Chinese fishing nets or enjoy the harbour atmosphere near the coast. If you arrive late, simply keep the evening free and begin the tour properly the following morning.
Why stay in Kochi first? Starting in Kochi avoids a long onward transfer immediately after your flight and gives you a comfortable entry into Kerala before moving into the backwater region.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
After breakfast, check out from your Kochi hotel and drive south to Kumarakom, a quiet backwater destination on the eastern side of Vembanad Lake.
On arrival, check in at your lakeside or backwater resort. Kumarakom works best when the first afternoon is not overloaded with sightseeing. Spend time enjoying the property, the waterfront, coconut-lined canals and the slower rhythm of the village landscape.
Later, take a short local walk or enjoy an optional sunset boat ride, subject to weather and local operating conditions. The wider Vembanad Lake landscape is very different from the tighter canal experience you will have later in Alleppey.
If you are interested in photography, the late afternoon often offers softer light over the lake and waterways. Keep the evening relaxed so you can begin Day 3 early for birding.
Overnight stay in Kumarakom.
Start early for a visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary and surrounding wetlands are most enjoyable when temperatures are cooler and bird activity is higher, so an early start is preferable where possible.
Walk through the wetland environment with time to observe local birdlife, water channels and the vegetation around Vembanad Lake. The experience changes with season, rainfall and migration patterns, so no particular species should be guaranteed.
After the sanctuary, continue with a village and backwater experience around Kumarakom. Depending on local arrangements, this can include narrow canals, village lanes, small farms, coconut groves or demonstrations connected with everyday rural life.
The most useful village visits are small-scale and respectful. They should help you understand how communities live around the backwaters rather than turn local life into a staged performance.
Return to the resort in the afternoon and keep the remaining time free. You can relax beside the lake, choose an optional short boat ride or simply enjoy the quieter environment before moving to Alleppey tomorrow.
Overnight stay in Kumarakom.
After breakfast, check out from Kumarakom and continue to Alleppey for the classic houseboat experience. Although Kumarakom and Alleppey are both part of the Vembanad backwater region, the style of the experience is different.
Board your pre-booked Kerala houseboat and settle into the cabin before the cruise begins. As the boat moves through the waterways, watch for village homes, small jetties, coconut groves, local boats and the low-lying paddy fields that make this landscape distinctive.
Meals are generally prepared onboard according to the booked meal plan. If you have vegetarian, vegan, allergy-related or other dietary requirements, these should be communicated before the houseboat departure rather than after boarding.
Houseboats normally cruise during permitted daylight hours and stop for meals, local navigation requirements and the overnight mooring. They do not usually cruise continuously throughout the night.
Before booking: confirm whether the selected boat is private or shared, the cabin category, air-conditioning hours, meal inclusions and boarding location. These details affect the quality of the experience more than simply choosing a boat by exterior photographs.
Overnight stay on an Alleppey houseboat.
After breakfast on the houseboat, complete the morning cruise and disembark according to the boat's operating schedule. Meet your driver and continue to Kochi.
After hotel check-in, begin your main city sightseeing in Fort Kochi. Walk through the historic quarter and visit the waterfront around the Chinese fishing nets. Continue to St. Francis Church, one of the important landmarks associated with Kochi's colonial-era history.
Explore the streets around the old European quarter, where churches, heritage buildings, cafés and residential lanes create a very different atmosphere from the backwater villages visited earlier in the tour.
In the late afternoon, keep some free time for the waterfront or an optional cultural programme. If you are interested in Kerala's performing arts, a Kathakali-related evening experience can be considered, subject to local schedules.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
After breakfast, check out from the hotel but keep your luggage arranged according to the departure schedule. Continue sightseeing in Mattancherry and the old trading districts of Kochi.
Visit the area around Mattancherry Palace, subject to opening hours, and continue into Jew Town, known for its historic trading connections, antique shops and spice-market atmosphere.
If access and timing permit, include the historic synagogue area. Active religious sites may have specific visitor rules, security procedures and closing days, so the exact order of today's sightseeing should remain flexible.
The final morning shows another side of Kochi beyond Fort Kochi's waterfront, focusing on the city's multicultural trading history and long connection with the spice routes.
At the appropriate time, transfer to Kochi International Airport or railway station for your onward journey.
Your 6 Days Kumarakom, Alleppey and Kochi Backwater Tour concludes after combining Kumarakom's wetlands and village landscape, an Alleppey houseboat cruise and the historic neighbourhoods of Kochi.
