6 Days Kovalam, Poovar, Varkala and Thiruvananthapuram Tour

5 Nights / 6 Days Thiruvananthapuram · Kovalam · Poovar · Varkala · Thiruvananthapuram

Tour Overview

This 6 Days Kovalam, Poovar, Varkala and Thiruvananthapuram Tour is designed for travellers looking for a relaxed South Kerala holiday that combines the Arabian Sea coast, a backwater experience and the cultural highlights of Kerala's capital. Instead of trying to cover too many destinations, the itinerary spends three nights around Kovalam, giving you enough time to enjoy the beaches and make a comfortable excursion to Poovar. It then continues to Varkala, famous for its cliffside coastal setting, before finishing in Thiruvananthapuram.

The route works especially well for couples, families and first-time Kerala visitors who prefer beaches and local experiences over a fast hill-station circuit. In Kovalam, the focus is on Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach, Samudra Beach and relaxed coastal time. The Poovar excursion adds Kerala's backwater landscape through mangrove-lined waterways and the estuary area. Varkala brings a completely different coastal character, with its cliff promenade, Papanasam beach area and traditional temple heritage.

The final part of the tour introduces Thiruvananthapuram's cultural side. Depending on opening conditions and your interests, sightseeing can include the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple area, Napier Museum, Sri Chitra Art Gallery or other city landmarks. Entry rules at active temples may differ by visitor eligibility, dress requirements and local regulations, so the programme should remain flexible rather than promising access that may not be available.

This itinerary is also easy to extend. Travellers wanting a classic Kerala backwater stay can continue to Alleppey or Kumarakom. Those with more time can add the wildlife and spice-growing region around Thekkady or the tea hills of Munnar. Browse our Kerala tour packages for longer combinations.

Detailed Itinerary

Arrive at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or the railway station, where our representative will meet you for the private transfer to Kovalam. The coastal resort area lies close to the capital, making it an easy first stop after your journey to Kerala.

On arrival, check in at your hotel and keep the first afternoon deliberately relaxed. After some rest, head towards the beach area for your first view of the Arabian Sea. Depending on your hotel location and arrival time, you can stroll along Lighthouse Beach or spend time around the seafront cafés and promenade.

If you arrive early enough, the evening is ideal for watching the sunset from the coast. Avoid overloading the first day with city sightseeing, especially after a long flight or train journey. The main Kovalam sightseeing is planned for the following day.

Travel tip: Kovalam is a beach destination, so lightweight clothing, sun protection and comfortable sandals are useful. Swimming should always follow local sea-condition and lifeguard advice.

Overnight stay in Kovalam.

Arrival in Thiruvananthapuram and transfer to Kovalam beach

After breakfast, spend a full day discovering Kovalam. Rather than treating Kovalam as a single beach, today's programme introduces the different sections of its coastline and leaves enough free time to actually enjoy them.

Begin around Lighthouse Beach, the best-known part of Kovalam's waterfront. Walk along the seafront and enjoy views towards the lighthouse and curved bay. Continue towards Hawa Beach, another lively stretch of coast, before visiting the quieter surroundings of Samudra Beach.

The afternoon can remain flexible. You may return to your preferred beach, relax at the hotel or choose an optional Ayurveda or wellness session. Travellers interested in photography often prefer the late afternoon, when the light becomes softer and the coastline is more atmospheric.

There is no need to rush between beaches. The purpose of this day is to enjoy Kovalam as a coastal stay rather than merely tick off attractions. During the monsoon or periods of rough sea, follow local warnings and avoid entering the water where swimming is restricted.

After breakfast, drive south from Kovalam for an excursion to Poovar. This part of South Kerala is known for its meeting point of river, backwaters and the Arabian Sea, offering a quieter landscape than the larger beach resorts.

Board a locally operated boat for a cruise through narrow waterways bordered by coconut palms and mangrove vegetation. The route may pass village edges, small canals and wider stretches of backwater before approaching the estuary area. The exact cruising route depends on water conditions and the operator's permitted navigation area.

One of the most attractive parts of Poovar is the contrast between calm inland waterways and the open coast. Depending on tides and local access conditions, the excursion may include views towards the sandbar or beach area near the estuary. Boat access and stopping points can vary, so it is better to describe this as a scenic backwater experience rather than promise a fixed landing.

After the boat ride, return to Kovalam. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for the beach, hotel facilities or another sunset walk.

If you want a longer backwater experience later in your Kerala trip, consider extending the journey to Alleppey or Kumarakom.

After breakfast, check out from your Kovalam hotel and travel north to Varkala. Although both destinations are on Kerala's coast, Varkala feels very different because the beach sits below a distinctive cliff edge lined with walking paths, cafés and viewpoints.

After hotel check-in, begin with a walk along Varkala Cliff. The elevated promenade gives broad views over the Arabian Sea and is one of the best places to understand the destination's unusual geography. Continue down towards the Papanasam Beach area for time by the sea.

If you are interested in Varkala's spiritual side, you can also visit or view the area around Janardhana Swamy Temple, subject to current access rules and temple regulations. Active places of worship should be visited respectfully, with appropriate clothing and without assuming that all interior areas are open to every visitor.

Spend the late afternoon back on the cliff or beach. Varkala is particularly enjoyable around sunset, when the promenade becomes lively but still feels more relaxed than a large city resort.

Overnight stay in Varkala.

Kovalam to Varkala tour with cliff and beach sightseeing

Enjoy breakfast in Varkala and keep the early morning free for a final walk along the cliff or beach. Later, check out and drive south to Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's state capital.

After arrival and hotel check-in, begin selected city sightseeing. A practical route can include the area around Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, one of the city's best-known landmarks. Because it is an active temple with specific entry and dress regulations, access should always be planned according to the rules in force on the day of your visit.

Continue, depending on opening hours, towards the Napier Museum and nearby cultural precinct. Travellers interested in art can also consider the Sri Chitra Art Gallery when open. These visits add a cultural dimension to a trip that has so far focused mainly on the coast.

If museum timings do not fit your schedule, the city programme can instead focus on markets, neighbourhoods or other locally available attractions. This flexibility is useful because museums and institutional attractions may have weekly closing days or revised hours.

Overnight stay in Thiruvananthapuram.

Varkala to Thiruvananthapuram city sightseeing tour

After breakfast, check out from your hotel. Your departure transfer will be planned according to the timing of your flight or train.

If your departure is later in the day, keep the morning flexible for a short local visit, shopping or additional sightseeing that could not be completed on Day 5. It is better to choose a nearby activity rather than add a long excursion before an airport or railway transfer.

At the appropriate time, drive to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or the railway station for your onward journey.

Your 6 Days Kovalam, Poovar, Varkala and Thiruvananthapuram Tour ends after a well-paced South Kerala journey combining Kovalam's beaches, the Poovar backwaters, Varkala's cliff coast and the cultural heritage of the capital.

Tour concludes in Thiruvananthapuram.
