Well Organized Trip

This 5 Days Varkala, Kollam and Munroe Island Tour is a compact South Kerala itinerary for travellers looking for a mix of cliffside beach scenery, historic coastal towns and a more local backwater experience. The journey starts from Thiruvananthapuram and moves to Varkala for two nights, then continues to Kollam and the quiet canals of Munroe Island.
The itinerary is especially suitable for couples, repeat Kerala visitors and travellers who want a Munroe Island backwater tour with Varkala instead of the more commercial Alleppey houseboat circuit. Varkala provides the beach and cliff experience, Kollam introduces the Ashtamudi Lake region, and Munroe Island offers a close-up look at narrow village canals, coconut-lined waterways and everyday backwater life.
The trip is intentionally short and focused. Rather than trying to add Munnar, Thekkady or Kochi, it keeps travel concentrated in southern Kerala so you spend more time experiencing each place. That makes it a practical choice for travellers with five days who prefer coast and backwaters over long mountain drives.
Munroe Island is best explored through small locally operated boats or canoes where available. Because these experiences use narrow waterways and local village routes, timing can depend on tides, weather, water levels and operator availability. The exact canal route should remain flexible instead of being presented as a fixed guaranteed circuit.
Travellers who want a longer backwater experience can extend the route to Alleppey or Kumarakom. Those wanting another beach stay can continue to Kovalam. Browse our Kerala tour packages for longer combinations.
Arrive at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or railway station and meet your driver for the private transfer to Varkala. The journey takes you north along Kerala's southern coastal belt and is a comfortable first transfer after your arrival.
Check in at your hotel and take some time to rest. Later, walk towards Varkala Cliff, where the elevated promenade overlooks the Arabian Sea and gives the destination its distinctive character.
Continue towards Papanasam Beach and enjoy the late-afternoon coastal atmosphere. If the weather is clear, sunset from the cliff or beach is one of the best ways to begin the trip.
Keep the first day light, especially after a long flight. The full Varkala sightseeing programme is planned for tomorrow.
Overnight stay in Varkala.
After breakfast, spend a full day exploring Varkala. Begin with an easy morning walk along the cliff before the temperature rises. Stop at selected viewpoints and explore the different access paths towards the beach.
Spend time around Papanasam Beach, which is used both for recreation and religious rituals. Visitors should be respectful around ritual areas and avoid intrusive photography.
Continue to the area around Janardhana Swamy Temple if temple heritage interests you. Entry rules, dress codes and visitor eligibility can vary at active Hindu temples, so interior access should only be planned when permitted.
The afternoon can include a slower coastal walk, wellness time, local cafés or additional beach time. Varkala is a place where unstructured time adds value, so avoid turning the day into a rushed checklist.
Sea conditions can become rough during parts of the year. Always follow local safety warnings before swimming.
Overnight stay in Varkala.
After breakfast, check out from Varkala and drive north to Kollam, one of Kerala's historic port cities and an important gateway to the Ashtamudi Lake backwater system.
On arrival, check in at your hotel and begin a relaxed orientation of the city and waterfront. Depending on your interests and hotel location, spend time around the lakefront or selected heritage areas connected with Kollam's long maritime and trading history.
The focus today is not a long sightseeing list. Kollam works best as a transition between Varkala's coast and the smaller backwater environment of Munroe Island. Leave enough time to enjoy views of the Ashtamudi waterways and the local harbour atmosphere.
If a short boat experience is available locally and fits your schedule, it can be considered, but the main backwater excursion is planned for Day 4.
Overnight stay in Kollam.
After breakfast, travel from Kollam towards Munroe Island, a low-lying cluster of village landscapes surrounded by canals, lake channels and waterways connected with the Ashtamudi backwaters.
Explore the island by a small locally operated boat or canoe-style craft where available. Smaller boats are well suited to Munroe Island because they can enter narrower canals that larger tourist boats cannot access.
During the excursion, pass coconut groves, village homes, small bridges and local waterways used by residents. Depending on the route, you may also observe everyday activities connected with fishing, coir, farming or household life.
The experience should remain respectful and low-key. Munroe Island is a living community, not a staged attraction, so avoid intrusive photography and treat village interactions naturally.
Boat conditions: exact timing and canal access can depend on tides, rainfall, water levels, weather and local operator availability. Routes may therefore differ between visits.
After the backwater excursion, return to Kollam. Keep the evening free for rest or another walk near the waterfront.
Overnight stay in Kollam.
After breakfast, check out from your Kollam hotel and drive south towards Thiruvananthapuram. The departure timing will be planned around your onward flight or train.
If your schedule allows, a short city stop can be added in Thiruvananthapuram, but the final day should remain practical. It is better to choose a nearby attraction or shopping stop than risk a long excursion before departure.
At the appropriate time, transfer to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport or railway station for your onward journey.
Your 5 Days Varkala, Kollam and Munroe Island Tour concludes after combining Varkala's dramatic cliff coastline, Kollam's Ashtamudi backwater setting and the narrow village canals of Munroe Island.
Tour concludes in Thiruvananthapuram.
