This 5 Days Mandu, Dhar, Maheshwar and Bagh Caves Tour is designed for travellers who want to explore the deeper cultural side of western Madhya Pradesh. The route begins from Indore, continues through Dhar to the historic hilltop city of Mandu, then travels to the rock-cut Bagh Caves before finishing in Maheshwar on the Narmada River.
Compared with a standard Mandu tour, this itinerary gives more time to the different monument zones and adds lesser-visited Dhar and Bagh Caves. It is particularly suitable for travellers interested in archaeology, architecture, early Buddhist art, regional history and quieter heritage destinations.
Mandu forms the architectural centre of the trip, with royal palaces, mosques, tombs, pavilions and water structures spread across a large plateau. Dhar adds historical context, while Bagh Caves introduce an entirely different artistic tradition through ancient rock-cut Buddhist monuments and surviving mural traditions.
The final stay in Maheshwar provides a relaxed contrast, with riverside ghats, temples, fort architecture and local handloom traditions. The tour can also be extended to Omkareshwar, Ujjain or Indore for a longer Central India itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary
Meet your driver in Indore and begin the journey towards Dhar, a historic town with deep connections to the political and cultural history of the Malwa region.
Spend time exploring selected heritage landmarks in Dhar according to your arrival time and interests before continuing to Mandu.
On arrival in Mandu, check in at your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening in the hilltop town.
Overnight stay in Mandu.
After breakfast, begin a full day of Mandu sightseeing, focusing first on the Royal Enclave.
Explore palace complexes, pavilions and water structures that illustrate Mandu's sophisticated court architecture and adaptation to the plateau landscape.
Continue to the Central Group, where important religious, civic and funerary monuments reveal another side of Mandu's architectural history.
Your guide can adjust the pace to allow enough time for photography, historical interpretation and short breaks between monument clusters.
Overnight stay in Mandu.
Continue exploring the southern sections of Mandu, where several important pavilions, viewpoints and monuments are set against the wider Malwa landscape.
This slower second sightseeing day allows you to see areas that are often missed on short Mandu tours and to better understand how the historic city was spread across the plateau.
Depending on your interests, include local viewpoints, smaller monuments or village areas before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast, check out and drive towards the Bagh Caves, one of the most distinctive archaeological attractions in this part of Madhya Pradesh.
Explore the rock-cut cave complex and learn about its Buddhist associations, architectural planning and surviving artistic traditions.
After the visit, continue by road to Maheshwar, the historic riverside town associated with the Narmada River.
On arrival, check in at your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening near the ghats or old town.
Overnight stay in Maheshwar.
After breakfast, explore Maheshwar, beginning with the fort and palace area overlooking the Narmada River.
Walk along the riverside ghats, visit important temples and spend time in the old town. If interested, learn about the traditional handloom weaving associated with Maheshwari textiles.
Later, drive back to Indore and transfer to the airport, railway station or another agreed departure point.
Your 5-day Mandu, Dhar, Maheshwar and Bagh Caves tour concludes after a rewarding journey through Malwa's architectural, archaeological and riverside heritage.
