Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel designer (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 5 Days Cherrapunji Trekking Tour is designed for active travellers who want more than conventional sightseeing in Meghalaya. Starting from Guwahati, the journey travels through Shillong to Cherrapunji, where the main experience is the trek from Tyrna to Nongriat village and the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge.
The itinerary targets search intent for Nongriat trek, Double Decker Root Bridge tour, Rainbow Falls trek and Cherrapunji trekking package. Unlike a normal Meghalaya road itinerary, this route gives sufficient time for the physically demanding descent, an overnight experience in Nongriat and a separate extension towards Rainbow Falls.
The Nongriat trek involves a long series of stone steps, steep ascents and descents, suspension bridges and humid forest sections. Travellers should be reasonably fit and comfortable with a demanding walking day.
Staying overnight in Nongriat is recommended for this itinerary because it avoids forcing the descent, Rainbow Falls extension and the entire climb back to Tyrna into one rushed day.
Rain can make steps and forest trails slippery. Use footwear with strong grip, carry drinking water and light rain protection, and follow a local guide or experienced companion familiar with the route.
Travellers who do not want a strenuous trek can choose other Meghalaya tour packages focusing on Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and easier living-root-bridge walks.
Arrive at Guwahati Airport or railway station and meet your driver for the journey towards Shillong.
Leave the Assam plains and gradually climb into the Khasi Hills, with changing scenery of wooded slopes and hill settlements.
Stop at Umiam Lake if weather and daylight permit. This makes a convenient scenic break before entering Shillong.
On arrival, check in at your hotel. Keep the evening relaxed so that you begin the trekking section of the tour well rested.
Overnight stay in Shillong.
After breakfast, drive towards Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra.
Stop at selected viewpoints and waterfalls where visibility and local access are good.
Visit a suitable limestone cave or another natural attraction if included in the final programme, but keep the walking moderate because the main trek begins the next morning.
Check in at your Cherrapunji hotel and use the afternoon to prepare a light trekking bag with water, rain protection and essential personal items.
Avoid overloading this day with too many attractions so that you remain fresh for Nongriat.
Overnight stay in Cherrapunji.
Start early and drive from Cherrapunji to Tyrna village, the usual roadhead for the trek into Nongriat.
Begin the long descent through stone steps, forest paths and suspension bridges. The route involves thousands of steps and should not be treated as an easy village walk.
Take regular breaks and maintain a steady pace. During rain, the stone steps can become slippery and require extra care.
Reach Nongriat village and continue to the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge, formed from living tree roots guided and maintained across generations.
Spend time around the bridge and village without blocking local pathways or damaging the living roots. Follow any community instructions for access and photography.
Check in at a simple guesthouse or locally arranged accommodation in Nongriat and recover from the descent.
Overnight stay in Nongriat.
Begin early for the forest trek beyond Nongriat towards Rainbow Falls, subject to trail, daylight and weather conditions.
The route continues through dense vegetation and uneven forest sections beyond the Double Decker Living Root Bridge area.
Spend time at the falls from a safe viewpoint. Water conditions can change after rainfall, so do not enter pools or approach slippery edges unless local guidance specifically indicates that it is safe.
Return to Nongriat, collect your belongings and begin the demanding climb back towards Tyrna village.
The uphill return requires patience and stamina. Take regular rest stops rather than trying to complete the ascent too quickly.
Meet your vehicle at Tyrna and transfer back to Cherrapunji for a well-earned rest.
Overnight stay in Cherrapunji.
After breakfast, check out from your Cherrapunji hotel and begin the return drive towards Guwahati.
Keep the morning easy after the previous day’s climb and use only short scenic stops along the route if everyone feels comfortable.
Continue through the Khasi Hills and descend towards the Assam plains.
Maintain a comfortable buffer before your onward flight or train because weather and traffic can affect road travel.
Transfer to Guwahati Airport or railway station for departure.
Your 5 Days Cherrapunji Trekking Tour concludes after experiencing Nongriat, the Double Decker Living Root Bridge and Rainbow Falls.
Tour concludes in Guwahati.
