Well Organized Trip
We appreciated our travel design er (Ovijit) was able to customize our trip to add in additional stops and tailor our hotels to what we were looking for.
This 12 Days South India Coast-to-Coast Cycling Tour travels from the Bay of Bengal side of Tamil Nadu to the Arabian Sea side of Kerala. The route links Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Chettinad, Madurai and Kochi through a combination of supported cycling, heritage sightseeing and carefully selected rural roads.
The journey is designed for active inbound travellers who want a cultural cycling route rather than a pure endurance challenge. Coastal sections, village roads and rural Tamil Nadu provide the main riding, while the support vehicle bypasses heavy urban approaches, major highways and long transfer sections.
The eastern half of the journey combines coastal riding with temple towns and rural landscapes. Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry provide a gentle start before the route moves inland towards the Cauvery delta, Thanjavur and Chettinad.
The final section crosses towards Madurai and then onward to Kerala. Depending on road conditions, gradients and traffic, the crossing towards Kochi should use a mix of bicycle and support vehicle rather than forcing continuous riding on unsuitable intercity roads.
Heat, humidity and seasonal rain can affect South India cycling considerably. Early starts, hydration, helmets and flexible daily ride lengths are important throughout the programme.
Arrive in Chennai and transfer privately to your hotel.
Meet your cycling guide for a briefing covering the route, coastal heat, traffic conditions and support-vehicle procedure.
Complete bicycle fitting, saddle adjustment and a basic mechanical check where bicycles are supplied locally.
Your guide will explain group spacing, hand signals, hydration and how busy urban sections will be managed.
If arrival timing permits, take a short practice ride in a suitable low-traffic area.
Overnight stay in Chennai.
Leave Chennai by support vehicle to bypass the busiest urban traffic.
Begin cycling from a suitable coastal or secondary-road section south of the city.
Ride through fishing settlements, coastal landscapes and smaller communities where road conditions are appropriate.
The support vehicle can bypass heavy traffic or fast-road sections whenever necessary.
Arrive in Mahabalipuram and explore selected monuments according to current opening conditions.
Overnight stay in Mahabalipuram.
Begin early with a supported ride south from Mahabalipuram towards the Pondicherry region.
Cycle on selected quieter roads through coastal villages, agricultural areas and small settlements.
Keep the pace steady and avoid racing on narrow roads shared with local traffic.
Use the support vehicle for busier highway stretches or if afternoon heat becomes uncomfortable.
Arrive in Pondicherry and spend the evening exploring the seafront and heritage quarter on foot.
Overnight stay in Pondicherry.
Begin with an early ride through suitable countryside outside central Pondicherry.
Cycle through villages, agricultural areas and tree-lined local roads.
The guide can include a loop ride rather than forcing the group through busy central traffic.
Return to town and explore selected heritage areas, markets or the waterfront according to the programme.
Keep the afternoon relaxed before the journey inland the following day.
Overnight stay in Pondicherry.
Leave Pondicherry by support vehicle and move inland towards a quieter cycling start point.
Ride through rural Tamil Nadu landscapes with fields, irrigation channels and village roads.
The terrain is generally easier than the later cross-state sections, although heat can increase difficulty.
Rejoin the support vehicle for longer or busier stretches towards Thanjavur.
Check in and prepare for temple and countryside exploration the following day.
Overnight stay in Thanjavur.
Visit the Brihadisvara Temple area according to current access and religious-site rules.
Later, begin a supported ride through the wider Cauvery delta region.
Cycle through agricultural villages, paddy areas and smaller rural roads where conditions are suitable.
Keep speed low near villages, school zones, livestock and farm traffic.
Return to Thanjavur after the ride and enjoy a relaxed evening.
Overnight stay in Thanjavur.
Leave Thanjavur and begin cycling from a suitable rural section towards the Chettinad region.
Ride through quieter village roads, farmland and small settlements.
The landscape gradually changes as the journey approaches Chettinad’s distinctive towns and heritage houses.
Use the support vehicle for busier intercity sections or if heat becomes excessive.
Check in and take an evening walk through a suitable heritage area.
Overnight stay in Chettinad.
Begin early with a relaxed cycling loop through the Chettinad region.
Ride past heritage mansions, village streets and local landscapes where public road access is appropriate.
Stop only at properties or interiors where visitor access has been arranged.
The ride should remain unhurried, allowing time for architecture, village life and cultural interpretation.
Return to the accommodation and rest before continuing to Madurai.
Overnight stay in Chettinad.
Leave Chettinad after breakfast and begin a supported ride through suitable rural roads towards Madurai.
Cycle through villages and agricultural areas before traffic becomes heavier closer to the city.
Rejoin the support vehicle for the urban approach.
On arrival, check in and later explore the Meenakshi Temple area according to current religious access and visitor rules.
Keep the evening relaxed before the cross-state stage towards Kerala.
Overnight stay in Madurai.
Begin early with a supported ride through suitable countryside outside Madurai.
Cycle through rural roads and agricultural landscapes before beginning the longer westward journey.
Because the route towards Kerala includes busier corridors and changing terrain, use the support vehicle for unsuitable sections.
Where road conditions allow, add another short cycling section later in the day.
Check in at a suitable overnight point on the westward route and rest.
Overnight stay en route to Kerala.
Continue west towards Kerala, combining a supported bicycle section with vehicle transfers according to road and traffic conditions.
The scenery becomes greener as the route moves towards Kerala’s humid lowlands.
Ride on selected quieter roads where possible rather than treating busy cross-state highways as mandatory cycling stages.
Complete the final approach to Kochi by support vehicle.
Check in and enjoy a final evening on the Arabian Sea side of the journey.
Overnight stay in Kochi.
Depending on departure timing, take a short easy final ride through suitable streets around Fort Kochi.
Enjoy the contrast between the east-coast start in Tamil Nadu and the Arabian Sea setting at the end of the journey.
Return to the hotel, pack the bicycles and load luggage into the support vehicle.
Transfer privately to Kochi airport, railway station or your agreed onward point.
