Badami (formerly known as Vatapi) is an archaeological delight owing to its beautifully crafted sandstone cave temples, fortresses, and carvings, situated in a valley of rugged red sandstone surrounding the Agastya River. Once the Chalukyas royal capital, Badami continues to enjoy a unique place, home to several examples of Dravidian architecture that supports and enhances instances of both South and North Indian architecture. There are three Hindu Temples in Badami Caves and one Jain Temple. Badami is well known for its ancient architecture and its rich history.
It was the former capital of the early Kingdom of Chalukya. Here you can find some richly carved temples and caves belonging to Chalukyas, dating from the 6th and 7th centuries. The Chalukyas laid the foundation for a unique architectural style which is a fine blend of North Indian Nagara style and Dravidian South Indian architecture style. Later-day architectural and sculptural practices were influenced by the architecture and sculptures produced at Badami during the Chalukyas. Some historically significant sites are located near Badami.
