Mullakkal Rajarajeshwari Temple, Kerala

The temple of Mullakkal Rajarajeshwari is in the district of Alappuzha (or Alleppey) in Kerala.  It is known for its backwaters.  Mesmerized by the pristine and idyllic town of Alleppey with its meandering canals, Lord Curzon named the city “Venice of the East,” a nickname the city proudly holds even today. A Hindu temple with a history dating back to almost 500 years, the shrine’s main deity is “Mullakkal Devi.” The consecration of the present deity took place in 1962, when as per the accepted word, a person with special needs hugged the former idol, thus creating cracks in the statue. After consultations with religious heads and doing astrological readings, dictum was given by the consulting person that the reasons for the cracks developing in the sculpture are an indication by the “Mullakkal Devi” that new idol is to be dedicated in her honor, along with the building of a pond (Theerathakullam).
