Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, Delhi

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is a prominent Sikh community prayer house and Delhi tourist destination. The memory of the Guru HarKrishan who was eighth Sikh Guru was dedicated to this 17th-century shrine. The Gurudwara is situated near Connaught Palace in the busiest district of the national capital because of its magnificent construction, beauty of its architecture and the large water bodies known as 'Sarovar,' located in the complex. When you book hotels in Delhi for a holiday or a visit to Delhi you certainly deserve to visit this place on your tour.

Raja Jai Singh devoted his bungalow to the remembrance of the revered Guru, after his death. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib therefore was born and was a major veneration centre for the Sikhs. The Raja also built a tank over the well, now a hallmark of this Gurudwara.

Over the years, there have been several changes to the structure of the original Gurudwara. In 1783 it was reconstructed bySardarBhagel Singh Dhaliwal. However, mainly after 1947 the present structure of Gurudwara was built.

Bangla Sahib Gurudwara Architecture

Bangla Sahib’s architecture is known both for its religiosity and its beautiful view. In Sikh architecture the big buildings are built. The entire structure is made of white marble, and its distinctive feature is the central golden dome. Nishan Sahib is the tall flag standing on the dome and can be seen from a distance. Complex sculptures embellish Gurudwara's front wall. The presence inside the complex of the huge water tank, named Sarovar, enhances the aesthetic beauty of the entire structure. The building comprises a community kitchen, also known as the Langar, a museum, an art gallery, a school, a hospital and a library, alongside the Gurudwara tank and water tank.

Bangla Sahib's Langar hall serves free vegetarian food for approximately 10,000 people daily. This service is available to all visitors, irrespective of caste, religion, faith or economic standing in society. A lot of people have also extended their voluntary service to help prepare food at the community kitchen.

It may not be a huge size, however, it is among the places where you can find some information about Sikhism history. Baba Baghel Singh Museum is located inside Gurudwara. In the museum, the history of the ten Sikh gurus and the Sikh Martyrs who gave their lives for their religion is also described.
