The Union Ministry of Tourism’s Regional Director for the North East has announced a relaxation in the Restricted Area Permits (RAP) and Protected Area Permits (PAP) for foreign tourists visiting the border states of North East India. This move aims to boost tourism in the region.

Previous Challenges with Permits

Previously, obtaining RAP or PAP was challenging for foreign visitors. These permits were essential for accessing specific areas, especially border states like Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram.

New Provisions for Tourists

Now, foreign tourists can easily explore these states through tours organized by local tour operators from the respective states. These operators will manage all necessary arrangements, ensuring a low rejection rate for foreign visitors. However, it’s crucial to apply for permits ahead of time.

Tourism Development Goals

The Indian Government is keen on enhancing tourism in border areas, especially near China and Myanmar. This initiative aims to create job opportunities for locals and showcase the unique attributes of various villages. For example, Kibithu village in Arunachal Pradesh is renowned as the first place in India to receive the morning sun’s rays.

Potential Collaboration with Vietnam

Oraw highlighted the possibility of strengthening ties between Vietnam and India in the tourism sector. While there’s a limited number of Vietnamese tourists visiting India, many Indians travel to Vietnam. Oraw urges Vietnamese tour operators to tap into the growing popularity of North East India.

North East India’s Tourism Appeal

The North East is a hub for ‘green tourism’. In 2021, the region saw an unprecedented rise in domestic tourism, attracting 13 million visitors from across India. Tourists are drawn to its untouched environment, scenic beauty, and diverse lodging choices.
