With the economic crisis looming, the Sri Lankan government has announced that it will extend its multiple-entry tourist visa to five years in an effort to boost the tourism industry.

According to Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister, Harin Fernando, multiple entry visas are now available for one year.

Furthermore, the country also gives out single entry visas for a six-month stay. Fernando said that his proposal had recently been approved by the cabinet.

A five-year multiple entry tourist visa extension has been approved by Cabinet to help boost repeat tourism in Sri Lanka. With this scheme, a tourist can stay in Sri Lanka for six months at a time.” he said.

According to the Minister, the country had earlier offered a three-month visa for digital nomads to attract foreigners working remotely.

After the anti-government protests gradually subsided in July and August, tourism picked up.

In 2022, Sri Lanka expects 1 million tourists to arrive. “This year we expect USD 2 billion from tourism”, he said.
