Let’s take a journey with me to Spiti valley. Spiti is a small village, a cold desert area in the upper region of Himachal Pradesh. Height above sea level is 3800 m, known for its beautiful and serene monasteries, pollution-free with clear sky having worlds’ highest polling station.

Despite being a remote place, Spiti is well connected. There are petrol pumps, medical shops, ATM’s all along the way, but sometimes these ATM’s are not functional.

Finding Hotels and Restaurants is not a problem in Spiti. One can stay as a paying guest also with the locals. Camping along the river is another adventurous idea. It takes one or two days to acclimatize to the high altitudes of Spiti. The best way to rejuvenate is to take long walks and rest as much as possible to avoid falling sick.

A visit to Spiti is incomplete without being tasted the Tibetan food. Momos, Thukpa, and Lauphing are amongst the most popular dishes.

You should plan at least 5 to 10 days long days trip, as it needs five days in total to reach Spiti via Kinnaur and come back from Manali. During the rest of the three days, one can explore the tourist attractions. Here dwell the colorful monasteries, and the flavor of Tibetan culture can be experienced by sipping the salty buttery tea.

When is the best time to visit Spiti Valley?

The best time to visit Spiti valley is from March to October. The following is the Spiti Valley temperature information for each month:

  • March to June (14°c to 20°c)
  • July to September (13°c to 27°c)
  • October to February (-4°c to 20°c)

In between June and September, you can go to Spiti Valley without having to worry about heavy snow and avalanches.

How to Reach Spiti Valley?

By Road: It’s better to go to Spiti through Shimla as the height increases steadily and gradually. Moreover, tourist places are more on this road. One can hire private taxes from Shimla to Spiti.

Note: An important point to be kept in mind while visiting Spiti is that no ATM facility exists there. It is only available in Kazaso; one should carry enough cash to avoid any inconvenience.

By Rail: If one plans to go by train then, the closest railway station is Shimla, and the distance between Shimla and Spiti is 450 km.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Kullu is 250 km from Spiti.

If you’re an Indian citizen, you don’t need a permit to travel from Shimla to Spiti. The foreigners will, however, need a permit called the Inner Line Permit before traveling beyond Reckong Peo.
